Philip Burkhart

In 1910, Philip Burkhart (30) and his wife Eva (28) lived in Sunsbury Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with their children John H. (5) and Anna M. (1). Philip was a laborer who worked odd jobs. The census states that Philip and Eva had been married for two years and that this was the first marriage for each. This suggests that John may have been born out of wedlock. According to the census, Eva had given birth to two children, both of whom were still living.

In 1920, the family was enumerated twice: Once on or about January 9th in Warren Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio, and again a few days later in Wayne Twp. Family members are the same in both enumerations: Philip (41), Eva (36), John (15), Anna (11), Henry (8 or 9), Paul (6), Gilbert (4) and Elmer (2). Philip was a farmer who came to the United States in 1907. He was a naturalized citizen.

The West Virginia death records found for Philip Burkhart contain the abbreviation "D. K." for his parents. ("don't know).


Eva Mary Burkhart

Eva Burkhart and her children have not been found in the 1930 census.


Elmer Burkhart

Elmer Burkhart never married. He died in a fire.


Henry Wurtzbacher

In 1900, Henry Wurtzbacher (46) and his wife Amelia (43) owned a home in Washington District, Precinct 8, of Wheeling, West Virginia. He and Amelia had been married for 26 years. Six of the couple's eight children were still living in 1900. All six lived with the family: Lena (24), Charles (22), Adolph (17), Joseph (15), Adam (13) and Mary (9). Adam and Mary attended school. The three older boys all worked outside the home: Charles, Joseph and their father were glass workers. Adam worked in a mill.

Everyone in the household was born in West Virgina except Henry, who was a native of Germany. Henry and Amelia's parents were also born in Germany. Henry was a naturalized citizen who came to America as an infant in 1854.


Wendel Shott

In 1850, 30 year old German-born farmer Winder Shott lived in Lodi Twp., Athens County, Ohio with his wife Catherine (29) and children Elizabeth (8), Mary (6), Margaret (2), and John (1 mo.).

Ten years later, farmer Windel Shott (40) still lived in Lodi Twp., on a farm valued at $3600. The family's personal possessions were valued at an addiitonal $3200. Living in the household were his wife Catherine (38) and children Elizabeth (18), Mary (16), Margaret (13), John T. (12), Nicholas (8), Catherine (5), and William E. (2). Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, John and Nicholas attended school.

At the time of the 1870 census, "Wilhelm Shot" (52) and his wife "Caroline" (50) still lived in Lodi Twp. Wendel was employed as a retail dry goods merchant. Children Mary (22), Margaret (19), Nicholas (16), Catherine (14), Wilhelm (13), Abner (10) and Alice (7) still lived at home. All the children attended school except Mary and Alice. The family's real estate was valued at $8000, and their personal property was worth $2000.

In 1880, Windel Shott's occupation was once again "farmer." Windel (61) and his wife Catherine (59) lived in Lodi Twp. with their unmarried children Mary (30), John (28),. Catherine (23), William (21), Adam (19), Sarah (17), Alice (14), and Josephine (13). (One wonders where Sarah and Josephine were at the time of the 1870 census.)


Catherine Timony

Source of maiden name: death certificate of son, Nicholas.

According to the 1880 census, Catherine's father was from Ireland and her mother was a native of Prussia.


Elizabeth A. Shott

In 1860, 18 year old Elizabeth A. Shott lived on the family farm in Lodi Twp., Athens Co., Ohio with her parents and younger siblings. Elizabeth did not attend school. According to the census, she was employed as a spinner.


John T. Shott

In 1900, John T. Schott (49) lived with the family of his younger brother William in Lodi Twp., Athens County, Ohio.


Adam Leonard Shott

In 1920, 58 year old unmarried Adam [Adam] L. Shott lived as a roomer in the home of John Smith (63) Dubois, Clark Co., Idaho. Adam was born in Ohio and worked as a farm laborer. His father was born in Germany and his mother in the United States.

Adam Shott lived in San Francisco at the time of the death of his brother, Nicholas, in 1928.

In 1930, 69 year old unmarried Adam L. Shott lived in a rented home in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California. Living with him were several lodgers. Adam is listed as the head of the household. Adam worked as a laborer. Adam and his mother were born in Ohio, his father in Germany.


Josephine C. Shott

In 1900, 33 year old unmarried Josephine Shott lived at The Ohio Institute for the Blind, corner of Parsons Ave. & Main St., Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio. where she was employed as a waitress. According to the census, Josephine and her parents were born in Ohio.
In 1910, 43 year old Josephine C. Scott (sic) lived and worked as a laundress at the Ohio State School for the Blind, Parsons Ave., columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio. Josephine was born in Ohio.

In 1930 63 year old unmarried Josephine Shott lived at the Columbus State Hospital, West Broad Street, Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio where she was employed as a Hospital seamstress. She was born in Ohio as was her mother. According to the census, her father was born in the U.S. [Note: The Columbus State Hospital was also known as The Ohio Lunatic Asylum,and later as the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital]


Matilda Reischman

George and Matilda Haynes moved from Gallipolis, OH to Pemberville, OH in 1918. According to the obituary of her sister, Magdelena Reischman Kress, Tillie was living in Wheeling, WV in 1956.


Albert Jacob Reischman

Albert was enumerated twice in the 1900 census, once as a single man in the household of his parents, and again as a married father of one in his own home. One possible explanation is that the census taker visited Mathias Reischman’s household and said, “OK, Mrs. Reischman, now tell me about your children.” Barbara Burkhart Reischman dutifully listed all her living children, neglecting to mention that one of the kids was married and living elsewhere.

Elsewhere in Belmont county in 1900, Albert J. Rechman (25 - Mar 1875) rented a farm in Warren Twp. where he lived with his wife Mabel Clara (21 - Mar 1879) and son Edwin N. (9 mos. - Aug 1899). Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. The couple had been married for two years. Mabel had given birth to two children, only one of whom was living at the time of the census.

In 1910. 35 year old Albert J. Reischman lived with his wife Mabel C. (31) in a home they owned on "Cross Road to Barnesville," in Kirkwood Twp. Living with them were their children Nelson E. (10) and Paul K. (8). According to the census, Albert and Mable had been married for 11 years. All members of the household were born in Ohio; Albert's father was born in Germany and his mother in Ohio, Mabel's father was born in Ohio and her mother in Pennsylvania. Listed on the same census sheet were Alberts parents Mathias and Barbara and 2 of his brothers Leo and Otto.

On September 12, 1918, 43 year old self employed farmer Albert Jacob Reischman of Hendeysburg, Belmont Co., Ohio registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card, he was born on March 13, 1875 and his nearest relative was his wife, Mrs. Mabel Reischman of Hendeysburg. His physical description is given as medium height and build, gray eyes and brown hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, Albert Reichman (44) lived with his wife Mabel C. (40) and children on a rented farm in Kirkwood Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. The children were Nelson E. (20), Paul K. (18) and Alberta L. (9). Alberta attended school. All members of the household were born in Ohio; Albert's father was born in Germany and his mother in Ohio, Mabel's father was born in Ohio and her mother in Pennsylvania.

In 1930, Albert and Mabel C. Reischman owned a home Kirkwood Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. They were married when Albert was 22 and Mabel was 19. Albert worked as a truck driver for a milk company. They owned a radio.


Mabel Clara Kennon

Mabel C. Reischman's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder *Zanesville, OH) newspaper on April 2, 1958 EX-RESIDENT BELMONT CO. IS SUMMONED BARNESVILLE, O. -- Mabel C. Reischman, 79, former
resident of Route 8, near Hendrysburg died Tuesday monring
in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Gregory at Canton. She was a daughter of Edward and Lillian Kennon and was
born in this area. Her husband, Albert, died in 1939 [sic].
Besides Mrs. Gregory, she leaves two sons, Nelson of Canton
and Paul of Tampa, Florida; a brother, clarence Kennon,
Shadyside; three grandchildren, and three great-grand-
children. Friends may call at the Campbell funeral home, Barnesville,
Thursday after 6 p.m. Rev. Byron Evans of the First Presby-
terian church will be in charge of services there Friday at 1.
Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park.
