Vernon L. Butler THURSDAY APRIL 14, 2005 VERNON L. BUTLER 1922-2005 WOODSFIELD - Vernon L. Butler, 82, of Calais, died Tuesday
(April 12, 2005) at his home with his family by his side, following
an extended illness.
He was born June 29, 1922, in Monroe County, son of the late
Clem and Victoria Carpenter Butler. Mr. Butler retired from Con-
struction and Christman Quarry and was a trustee for Seneca
Township for 20 years. He was a Catholic by faith and a member
of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Miltonsburg.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brandon Butler; a
sister, Hilda Burkhart; and a brother-in-law, Glenn Kanzigg.
He leaves his wife, Cinderella Stephen Butler of Calais, whom
he married Dec. 31, 1941; five children, Carol (Grover) Gallagher
of Quaker City, Audrey (James) Crum of Caldwell, Rodney (Mary)
Butler of Woodsfield, Delores (Mark) Wells of Malaga and Marvin
(Lisa) Butler of Barnesville; a sister, Hazel Butler Kanzigg of Bealls-
ville; a brother-in-law, Herman Burkhart of Woodsfield; 13 grand-
children, Brent (Teresa) Gallagher, Brenda (Doug) George, Mike
(Amy) Crum, Daren (Holly) Crum, Karen (Jeff) Halasi, Stacey
(Peter) Patton, David Butler, Diane (Jerry) Clark, Michelle (Chuck)
Warner, Patrick (Cassie) Wells, Pamela (J.J.) Huffman, Lacy Butler,
and the late Brandon Butler; 19 great-grandchildren; three step-
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today (Thursday) at
Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield. Vigil services will be 8:30
p.m. today at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the
Baptist Catholic Church, Miltonsburg, with the Rev. Fr. David Gay-
dosik and Fr. Samuel Saprano officiating. Burial will be in Church
Cemetery.

The following wedding announcement appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on June 15, 1943:
WOODSFIELD -- On Tuesday morning, at a nuptial high mass, in St. John's
Catholic church, Miltonsburg, Miss Hilda Mariet Butler became the bride of Herman
Joseph Burkhart. Rev. George Drescher, officiated at the exchange of the marriage
vows. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Burkhart of Temperanceville,
and the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clem butler, of Woodsfield Route 3.
The couple left for Lexington where they will reside.


Obituary:

WOODSFIELD — Hilda M. Burkhart, 74, of Woodsfield, died Wednesday
(Feb. 7,2001) at Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling,
W.Va. She was born June 5, 1926, near Miltonsburg, daughter of the late Clemence
and Victoria (Carpenter) Butler. Mrs. Burkhart was a homemaker and a member
of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, where she was a member of the
Purgatorial Society and the Catholic Women’s Club. She was a member of Loyal
Order of Moose Ladies Auxiliary of Woodsfield.
She leaves her husband, Herman J. Burkhart, whom she married June 8, 1943;
a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Marlene) Yonak, Jr. of Centerville; three sons, Donald
(Marlene) Burkhart of Malaga, Gary (Victoria) Burkhart of Woodsfield and Terry
(Carol) Burkhart of Raleigh Durham, N.C.; a brother, Vernon (Cinderella) Butler of
Woodsfield; a sister, Mrs. Glenn (Hazel) Kanzigg of Beallsville; eight grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Watters Funeral Home,
Woodsfield. Vigi1 services will be 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mass of
Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Sylvester Catholic Church,
Woodsfield, with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Hamm serving as celebrant. Burial will be in
St. Sylvester Catholic Cemetery, Woodsfield.
