William George Schaad

Date of birth is faint and diffucult to read in the 1900 census. Other researchers have interpreted it as Apr 1882. Ben Miller gives 6 Apr 1882.

In 1910, 26 year old William Schaad lived as a boarder in the home of William McCully on Library Road in Bethel Twp., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. William worked as a carpenter for a general contractor. William was born in Ohio as was his father; his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Also boarding at the home of Mr. McCully was William's uncle George Thieman (Tiemann on the census sheet). William's sister Philamina also lived at the McCully home as a housekeeper.

On September 12, 1918, 36 year old William George Schaad (dob: April 6, 1882) of Castle Shannon, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card he worked as a self employed contractor and his nearest relative was his wife, Anna B. Schaad. His physical description is given as medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

In 1920, 37 year old William G. Schaad lived with his wife Anna B. (36) in a home they owned on Stiger Street, Castle Shannon, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them were their children William Jr. (2 yrs 11 mos) and Mary B. (1 yr 1 mo). Also living with them was William's niece Anna Ryan (7). William worked as a house carpenter. William was born in Ohio as was his father; his mother was born in Ohio. Anna and the children were born in Pennsylvania as were Anna's parents and Anna Ryan's parents.

In 1930, 47 year old William Schaad lived with his wife Anna (47) in a home they owned (value $7000) on Stiger Street, Bethel Park, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Their children were not enumerated with them. However, immediately following William and Anna on the census sheet was Chris Opfermann (52) and his wife Philomena (45). Philomena was William's sister. Living with Chris and Philomena were ther children Walter (16), Bernard (13), robert (11) and Steven (7). Also listed with the Opfermann's were the children of William and Anna Schaad, William (13), Mary (10 yrs 6 mos), Kathleen (9yrs 7 mos), and Bernardette (7 yrs 11 mos). (It is not known why the Schaad children were enumerated with the Opfermanns). William and Anna were both 32 years old when they were married. According to the census, William and Anna as well as their children were and their parents were born in Pennsylvania. William worked as a building contractor. They owned a radio.

From researcher Ed Miller:
William Schaad was the son of Joseph Henry Schaad and my grand uncle (His sister Mary Ann was my grandmother). In the 1920s he lived in Castle Shannon, PA. I remember my dad talking about going to Castle Shannon when he was a kid to visit but I never asked him who he was visiting. It must have been William or maybe his aunt Philomena Schaad Opferman. I remember in the back of my mind the name Minnie Schaad. Also, I have a picture of my Aunt Elizabeth, my sister and my brother with Bobby Opferman from Jan 1945. I couldn't find out who Bobby Opferman was. Now it appears that he was my father's first cousin. By the way, the George Thieman in 1910 is my Great Granduncle and the brother of by great grandmother Elizabeth Thieman.

Christopher J. Opfermann

In 1920, 41 year old Chris J. Opfermann lived with his wife Philomena (35) in a mortgaged home on Stiger Street in Castle Shannon, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them were their children Walter C. (6), Bernard J. (3 yrs 8 mos) and Robert A. 1 yr 6 mos). Chirs worked as a "Mine carpenter." Chris and the children were born in Pennsylvania as were Chris' parents and Phiomena's mother. Phiomena and her father were born in Ohio. Living nearby on Stiger Street was Philomena's brother William Schaad and his family.

In 1930, 52 year old Chris Opfermann lived with his wife Philomena (45) in a home they owned (value $5000) on Stiger Street, Bethel Park, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them were their children Walter (16), Bernard (13), Robert A. (11), and Steven (7). Chris worked as a "building carpenter." Chris was 35 and Philomena was 29 when they were married. According to the cenus, the entire household was born in Pennsylvania as were both Chirs and Philomena's parents. (Based on other info, Philomena and her father were actually born in Ohio). The family owned a radio. In addition to their own children, the children of Phiolmena's brother William Schaad who is listed with his wife Anna above the Opfermann's on the census are enumerated with them. These include William (13), Mary (10 yrs 6 mos), Kathleen (9 yrs 7 mos), and Bernardette (7 yrs 11 mos). The children are listed as nephew and nieces of Chris.

Philomena Schaad

In 1910, 25 year old Philimena Schaad worked as a housekeeper in the home of William McCully on Library Road in Bethel Twp., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Philimena was born in Ohio as was her father; her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Also living at the home of Mr. McCully as boarders were Philimena's brother William and her uncle George Thieman (Tiemann on the census sheet).
