Louis William Werner

At the time of the 1910 census, newlyweds Louis (26) and Ida (21) Werner rented a home at 1722 Jacob St. in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Louis worked as a heater in an iron mill. The couple had no children.

On 12 Sep 1918, 34 year old Louis William Werner of 17-14 Jacob St., Wheeling, WV filled out a US military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as December 19, 1883. Louis was a mill worker at Whitaker Glassner Co. He listed his wife (same address) as his nearest relative. Louis was described as being of medium height and build with brown eyes, brown hair and no physical disabilities.

The 1920 census shows the family of Louis W. Werner (36) and his wife Ida (31) living in a rented home at 1714 Jacob St. in Wheeling, WV. Their children were Dorothy (9), Madelyn (7), Edward (5), Margaret (3 yrs 11 mos), Ruth (2 yrs 6 mos), and Louis W. (6 mos). The two oldest girls attended school. Everyone in the family was born in West Virginia, as was Louis' father. His mother and Ida's parents were natives of Ohio. Louis worked at a tin mill.

In 1930, Louis Werner (46) and his wife Ida (41) rented a residence for $20 a month at 1717 Wood St. in Wheeling, WV. Living with them were their children Dorothy (20), Madelyn (18), Edward (16), Margaret (14), Ruth (12), Sarah (9), Paul (6), Donald (3), and Mary (2 mos). Edward, Margaret, Ruth and Sarah attended school. Louis worked as a heater in a steel mill. Dorothy was a clerk in a grocery store and Madelyn was a telephone operator. According to the census, everyone in the household was a native of West Virginia, as were their parents. Also living in the building was Ida's widowed father, Frank Burkhart, and the family of her sister, Nettie (Bernetta) Flading. The family did not owm a radio set.

In 1942, 58 year old Louis William Werner of 1717 Wood St., Wheeling, WV filled out a US military draft registration card. he gave his date and place of birth as Dec. 19, 1883 in Wheeling. Louis named Mrs. Louis Werner of the same address as a person who would always know his address. Louis was employed by the police department of the Wheeling Steel Corp.

Paul J. Werner

On 2 Nov 1942, Paul J. Werner enlisted in the US Air Corps as a private at Fort Thomas, KY. He had been born in 1924 in Ohio Co., West Virginia. He had completed four years of high school and was single with no dependents.


Edward George Flading

On 5 Jun 1917, 30 year old Edward George Flading of 1717 Wood St., Wheeling, West Virginia filled out a draft registration card. He was a glass worker at the Central Glass Co. in Wheeling. Edward indicated that he was responsible for a "wife & child." but their names were not given. Edward was of medium height and build, with grey eyes and black hair, with no physical disabilities.

In 1920, the household at 1717 Wood St. is listed twice in the census, one right after the other. Each head of household -- Joseph Burkhart and Edward Flading (his son-in-law) -- is listed as the owner of the property. The household of 33 year old Edward Flading consisted of his wife Nettie (29) and children Roy (3) and Evelyn (1). Edward was employed as a gatherer in a glass mill.

In 1930, Edward Flading (43) and his wife Nettie (39) rented a residence for $10 a month at 1717 Wood St. in Wheeling, WV (Nettie's childhood home). Rent was $10 a month. The children living in the home were Roy (13), Evelyn (12), Vera (8), Joan (6), and Robert (3). Also living in the home was Nettie's father, Frank Burkhart and the family of Nettie's sister, Ida Werner. Frank was born in Ohio to German parents. Everyone else in the household was born in West Virginia, as were their parents. Edward was a glass worker in a glass house. The Flading family owned a radio set.

Joseph Tony Burkhart

At the time of the 1910 census, 16 year old Joseph Burkahrt lived with his widowed father and siblings in Wheeling, WV. He was employed as a laborer in an iron mill.

On 5 Jun 1917, unmarried Joseph Tony Burkhart of 1717 Wood Ave., Wheeling, WV filled out a draft registration card. He was a mill worker at Whitaker Glessner Co. in Wheeling. Joseph answered "no" to the question that asked if he had a parent, wife or child dependent on his income. Joseph was described as being of medium height and build, with light blue eyes and light brown hair, with no physical disabilities.

In 1920, Joseph Burkhart Jr. (26) and his wife Ella (23) lived at 1717 Wood Ave. in Wheeling. Joseph worked as a riller in a tin factory. Listed as a separate family (and owner of the home) was his widowed father, Joseph Burkhart Sr. (60), and his daughter Helen (17).

The family has not been found in the 1930 census despite an extensive search of Soundex -equivalent names.

According to the 1920 census, Ella and her parents were natives of Ohio.


Alfred William Breiding

On Jun 5, 1917. Alfred Wm. Breiding of 2225 Eoff St.in Wheeling, WV filled out a US military draft regstration card. He gave his date of birth as Oct. 29, 1892 and stated that he was born in Whg. W.Va. He was a stogie maker fore Pollock Stogie Co. in wheeling. He stated that he was married. Alfred was described as being of medium height and build, with brown eyes and brown hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, Alfred Breiding (27) and his wife Marie (24) rented an apartment at 121 19th St. in Wheeling where they lived with their son, George (2 yrs 5 mos). George worked as a stogie maker in a cigar factory.

In 1930, Alfred Breiding (37) and his wife Marie (34) owned a home worth $3000 at 437 National Road in Wheeling. Living with them were their children George (12) and Marina (4). Everyone in the household was a native of West Virginia, as were their parents. Alfred was employed as a stogie maker in a cigar factory. The Breiding family owned a radio set.

In 1942, 49 year old Alfred William Breiding of 487 National Road, Wheeling, WV filled out a US military draft registration card. He gave his date and place of birth as 10-29-1982 in Wheeling, W. Va. Alfred worked at Continental Roll & Steel. He named Marie Catheryn Brieding as a person who would always know his address.


Helen Burkhart

In 1920, 17 year old Helen Burkhart lived with her widowed father at 1717 Wood St. in the 4th Ward of Wheeling, WV. Helen worked as a helper in a medicine(?) factory.


Lawrence Edward Charnock

In 1930, Lawrence Charnock (27) rented a home at 3538 ?? St. in Wheeling, WV. Living with him were his wife of six years, L??? (name illegible, but it is not Margaret) and children Lawrence was a native of Ohio, as was his father. His mother was from West Virginia. His occupation is illegible. Unlike most of their neighbors, the Charnock family did not own a radio set.

Margaret E. Singer

Lawrence Charnock's wife's name in the 1930 census is illegible, however it begins with an L. (Leona?) The name and age are wrong for her to be Margaret Singer.


Albert G. Hill

Obituary:
Albert G. Hill, age 64, of Canton, died Saturday, October 8,
2005 in his home following an extended illness. Born, October
26, 1940 in Caldwell, OH to the late Albert and Eleanor (Hupp)
Hill. He was a Canton area resident since 1959, retiring from
The Timken Company in 1996 after 37 years of service. Albert
was an Army veteran and a member of the DAV chapter #6,
VFW Post #3747 and the North Industry Sportsman Club.
He is also preceded in death by three brothers, Denny, Del-
bert and Dale Hill; one infant sister, Donna Jean Hill.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Hol-
lenbeck of Naples, FL, Joanne and Thomas Murphy of Virginia;
six grandchildren; one great grandson; one sister, Arlene
Chambers of Caldwell, OH; his dear friend and companion,
Mary Eggleston; her children, Craig Eggleston, Michele Eg-
gleston, Carl and his wife, Angie Eggleston; and their four
children.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at
3:00pm in Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S.
Cleveland Ave. with Terry Bailey officiating. Friends may
call two hours before services on Tuesday (1:00-3:00pm).
