Notes

Harry Charles Butler

At the time of the 1920 census, Harry A. Butler (22) and his wife Ada E. (23), owned a farm in Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Living with them were their children Ruth (2 yrs 6 mos) and Robert (7 mos). According to the census, everyone in the household was a native of Ohio, as were their parents.

Frederick Charles Fogle

In 1930, Fred Fogle (39) and his wife of 14 years, Lena (36) owned a home worth $1000 in Temperanceville, Somerset Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. Living in the household with Fred and Lene were their children Ronald (14), Evelyn (12), Jean (6), Ritta (4 yrs 3 mos), Robert (3 yrs 1 mo), and Norbert (1 yd, 3 mos). The three oldest children attended school. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio, as were their parents. Fred worked as a "commercial traveler" for a drug company. The census taker has the notation "ab" immediately after Fred's name. The meaning of this note is not clear. (One other person on the census page has the same notation.) Perhaps it means "absent." Lena Fogle's sister, Clara Butler Poulton, lived next door. The Fogle family owned a radio set.

Oscar Hunkler

In 1920, Oscar Hunkler (27) owned a farm in Kirkwood Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Living with him were his wife, Florence (25), and children Catherine (2 yrs 8 mos) and Paul (8 mos), and divorced brother Theodore Hunkler (45). Al residents of the household were natives of Ohio, as were their parents.

At the time of the 1930 census, the family still lived in Kirkwood Twp., The household consisted of Oscar R. (38), Florence E. (36), Catherine O. (13), Paul J. (11), and a boarder named George Snyder (23) . Both children attended school. This census disagrees with the 1920 census in that Oscar's father was a native of Pennsylvania. The Hunklers owned a radio set.

Florence Theresa Butler

Researcher Roger Schockling states that Florence T. Butler married Michael Hunkler. There is no record in any US Census of a Michael Hunkler married to a woman named Florence. There are, however, records of a Florence Theresa Hunkler (b. 27 Oct 1894), wife of Oscar Hunkler, living in Barnesville in 1920 and 1930. Further research needs to be done to prove whether or not this is Florence T. Butler (b. Oct 1894).

Forest Raymond Gallagher

At the time of the 1920 census, newlyweds Forest and Lizzie Gallagher lived on the farm of Lizzie's parents, Symon and Emma Butler.

In 1930, farm hand Forest Gallagher (30) rented a home for $6 a month in Temperanceville, Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Living with him were his wife, Elizabeth (30) and children Bernice (9), Virginia (7), Peter C. (6), Rita (4 yrs 1 mo.), and Theresa (2 yrs 4 mos). The oldest three children attended school.
