Nicholas Coleman

Alternate spelling of last name: Kullmann, Kuhlman, Kohlman.

The "History of Noble County, Ohio, 1887" lists Nicholas Kohlman as one of the early (c. 1840s?) German settlers of Enoch Township.

At the time of the 1850 census, 45 year old farmer Nicholas Coleman lived in Stock Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Catherine (47) and five children : Margaret (12), Mary (12), Catherine (10), Matilda (8), and John (5). Neither Nicholas nor his wife could read and write. All the children except John attended school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Joseph Bates and Jacob Lanam.

In 1860, 55 year old Hessian-born farmer Nicholas Coleman lived in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 56 year old wife and four children: Mary A. (22), Matilda (17), John (14), and Sylvester (9). All the children were born in Ohio. The three younger children attended school.

Nicholas Coleman's obituary appeared in the Fulda colmn of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 15 Feb 1883
Died - Feb. 9th after a sickness of six hours, Nicholas Kullman,
aged 77 years. He was born in the Duchy of Hesse and emigrated to
this country about forty years ago. The most of the time he lived on
his farm near East Union. He was one of the most exemplary members
of the Catholic church, never missing a Sunday to attend services save by
sickness, very often attending even in weakness, always walking these
five miles to the church, leaving home on the week days about half
past five in the morning to be in time for every call of charity or help
towards the church, he was one of the first to assist. Having helped his
son all day Friday till 4 o’clock in the afternoon, he felt drowsy and
repaired to his room and went to bed, and about 1 o’clock passed away.
A stroke or palsy seems to have been the cause of his sudden demise.
May his soul rest in peace. The bereaved widow has the sympathy of
the whole congregation and her neighbors.
