Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Hilda Schweinberg

Hilda has not been found in the 1920 census. She would have been about 14 at the time. She was not living with her mother and siblings.

Sebastian Heil

In 1880, Sebastian Hill (38) and his wife Catherine (37) lived on a farm in Jefferson Twp., Noble County, Ohio with their children Isadore (13), Apelana (12), Bridget (10), Henry (8), Adam (6), Cresa (5), Eve (3) and Mary A. (1). The oldest five children attended school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Valentine Baker and Albert Mallet.

The following notice appeared in the "Fulda Locals" section of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 29 Dec 1881:
A very devilish trick was played on a horse belonging to Sebast. Hile. Jacob
Singer drove this animal with one of his own to Harrietsville, accepting the
kind invitation of Esq. Smithberger, he remained with him over night, and the
next morning it was discovered that some fiend had cut off the animal's tail.
He should discover the criminal and have him punished.
Sebastian Heil was Jacob Singer's brother-in-law.

From the 1900 census: 58 year old farmer Sebastian Heil lived on a farm that he owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble County Ohio with his 57 year old wife, Katherine, and their three youngest children: Mary (21), Albert (20), and Roman (16). Sebastian was born in Ohio to German-born parents. Everyone in the household could read and write English.

Catharine Singer

Records conflict: Thomas Singer and the 1900 census have Catherine's year of birth as 1843, Delores Snider gives it as 1844. Other data suggest 1843 is correct (e.g., Catharine's sister Sybilla entered the US in 1843.)

On 2 Nov 1882, The Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
On the sick list this week... Mrs. Sebastian Heil.

The 1880 and 1900 census state that Katherine was born in Ohio, and the 1910 census indicates that she was born in France, as does her death certificate. However, researcher Thomas Singer states that Catherine Singer was born at sea between Le Harve, France and New York. Other passengers took up a collection to celebrate her birth and presented her parents with $200. This money allowed her father, Jacob, to purchase the land in Ohio on which he raised his family.

The 1900 census also indicates that Katherine's parents were born in Ohio, but there is a great deal of evidence to the contrary. Katherine gave birth to ten children, all of whom were alive in 1900.

Catherine Singer Heil's name appeared in an advertisement published in The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 27 Oct 1915:

Backache is often kidney ache: A common warning of serious kidney ills.
"A Stitch in Time Saves Nine"
Profit by this nearby resident's experiences:
Mrs. Sebastian Heil, R.F.D. 1, Fulda, Ohio says: "I suffered from backaches
and had pains through my kidneys. The kidney secretions also bothered me and
I had rheumatic twinges. When I heard about the benefit that a neighbor had
received from Doan's Kidney Pills, I used some. They helped me a great deal."

The obituary of Catherine Singer Heil was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 7 Jan 1929:

morning January 13, 1929 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Zanesville after a brief
illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Heil had made her home at the hospital for the past
six years. She was the widow of the Sebastian Heil and leaves the following

Mary A. Heil

The 1900 census states that 21 year old Mary lived at home with her parents and two younger brothers. Mary entered the convent as Sr. M. Majella, a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity. At the time of her mother's death (1929), Sister Majella worked in Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, where her mother had lived for the previous six years.

There are some discrepancies in the data:
Delores Snider has two girls named Mary in the family of Sebastian Heil and Christina Singer. Mary Carolina (b. 4 Apr 1879), and Mary Ann (birthdate unknown). She states that Mary Ann Heil entered the convent as Sister M. Majella and died Dec 9, 1963. No spouse or date of death is known for Mary Carolina Heil.

Researcher Tom Singer indicates only one child named Mary in the family: born 4 Apr 1879, entered the convent as Sr. M. Majella, and died 30 Oct 1963.
