Lawrence Schafer

In 1900, 32 year old farmer Lawrence Schafer lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 27 year old wife Marie and their four children: Adeline (7), Henry (5), Francis (3), and Sylvia (1).

Obituary:
LAWRENCE SCHAFER DIES IN NOBLE CO.
CALDWELL - Lawrence Schafer, 72, prominent
farmer of the Fulda community, died at his home Sunday
evening following an illness. He had been in failing health
for the past year. He suffered a stroke of paralysis last
November and never recovered. A son of John and Elenore
Debold Schafer, he was born and spent his entire life in the
Fulda community. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
church and the last surviving member of his family.
He married Mary N. Fisher and she preceded him
in death three years ago. Surviving are six daughters and three
sons: Mrs. Adaline Kramer of Canton; Henry, of the home;
Francis, of South Olive; Mrs. Sophia Crock, of South Olive,
Mrs. Louise Nau of Dexter City; Mrs. Henrietta Crock of
Dexter City; Shubert (sic), of Fulda; Mrs. Clara Michael and
Elenore Schafer, both of Canton.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9
o’clock at St. Mary's Catholic church at Fulda with Rev. Fr. B. J.
Mattes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.


Mary Ann Fisher

According to the census, all four of Marie Schafer's children were still living in 1900. Marie and her mother were born in Ohio; her father was born in Germany.

A brief death notice appeared on page 2 of the Newark [OH] Advocate on 3 Oct 1936:
Caldwell, Oct. 3 -- Mrs. Mary Ann Fisher Shafer, 63, died at his (sic)
home near Fulda after a long illness. Surviving are her husband,
Lawrence Shafer, seven daughters and two sons.

SHAFER RITES TODAY
CALDWELL - Last rites for Mary Ann Fisher Shafer,
aged 63, wife of Lawrence Shafer, of near Fulda, will be held
Saturday morning at 9 o’clock from St. Mary’s church with Rev.
B. J. Mattes conducting requiem high mass. Interment will be
in the Fulda cemetery.
Mrs. Shafer died at the family home following a long
illness. She was a daughter of Frank and Margaret Hupp Fisher.
The husband and nine children survive: Mrs. Madeline Kuerr
and Mrs. Clara Michael, Canton; Mrs. Sophia Crock and Francis
Shafer, South Olive, Mrs. Louise Nau and Mrs. Edna Crock,
Dexter City, Henry, Herbert, and Eleanore of the home.
Two brothers, Joseph and Frank Fisher of Fulda and
26 grandchildren also survive.

Obituary:
Andrew L. Crum, 63, of Caldwell Route 4, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday [1 Nov
1976] at the Good Samaritan Medical Center where he had been a patient for one
week. He was born August 15, 1913 in Noble County and was a farmer in the
Caldwell area. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of the St.
Mary's Catholic Church in Fulda.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline Crock Crum; two daughters, Mrs. Connie Schott
and Mrs. Donna Miller, both of Caldwell Route 4; two sisters, Mrs. Leona Huhman
(sic) of Caldwell Route 4 and Mrs. Lucie Kress of Caldwell Route 1; two brothers,
Walter Crum of Caldwell Route 4 and Paul Crum of Woodsfield; and three grandsons.
The body was taken to the Brubach Funeral Home in Summerfield where Friends
may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday
at the funeral home.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Mary's Catholic church with
burial in the church cemetery.

The following article appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on September 24, 1954: CALDWELL -- The Noble county Rifle and Pistol club held
a shooting match at the Noble county fairgrounds last Sunday
afternoon. Prizes were won by John Witchie of Woodsfield,
who won three chickens and a turkey, Leander Crock, two
chilckens, and Cletus Estadt, two chikens and a turkey.
Threre were 15 contestants competing in the match. Charles
Lorenz, president, said another match will be held Sunday,
October 3.

Leander E. Crock age 85 of Caldwell, OH passed away
Tuesday March 16th, 2010 at the Grant Medical Center in
Columbus, OH. He was born July 4th, 1924 in Noble County,
OH a son of the late Roman and Sophia Schafer Crock. Lee served and protected his nation in the U.S. Army in
WWII in the European Theater. Following his return to Noble
County, Lee went on to found and operate several businesses,
a few being The Food Center Emporium, Caldwell Lumber,
Crock Construction and the Summit Acres Nursing and Rehab. He enjoyed hunting and traveling. For many years Lee
was active in the Noble County Chamber of Commerce,
Local and State Level Politics. He was a member of St. Mary’s
of the Immaculate Conception Church in Fulda and was very
passionate about the Feed The Children Program. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a Sister
Pauline Crum, a Brother Joseph Crock and Granddaughter
Roberta Robinson. Lee is survived by his wife Bonnie Crock of the home, whom
he married May of 1991; Daughters Judy (Jack) Robinson and
Vickie Sawyer all of Caldwell; Sons Don (Julie) Crock, Dennis
(Thomasina) Crock, Edward (Kathy) Crock and Dan (Vanessa)
Sawyer all of Caldwell; Grandchildren Brian, Troy, Jackie and

According to his niece, Judith Crock Robinson, Joe fell and broke his elbow while attending Dexter City school. In 1940, the Crocks transferred to Fulda school.

TWO NOBLE CO BOYS BITTEN BY RABID FOX
CALDWELL - Andrew Schafer, 14, and Joseph
Crock, 15, both of near Fulda, were receiving treatment today
after having been bitten last week by a grey fox later found by
state health authorities to have been rabid.
With a number of other children, the boys captured
the animal alive while returning home from school. The fox was
shot and its head was sent to Columbus where an examination
disclosed rabies.

Perkins Funeral Home, Caldwell, with Christian Scripture
services at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Interment will be in St. Marys Parrish Cemetery, Fulda.


Ruth Sorg

The obituary of Ruth Sorg Crock appeared in the Caldwell Journal, Caldwell, Ohio April 18, 1957

Mrs. Ruth Anna Crock, 24, wife of Joseph Crock of Caldwell route 4 died at 3:00 am
Sunday morning in the St. Francis hospital, Cambridge of complication, after giving birth
April 2 to her third daughter. Mrs. Crock had been a patient in the hospital since April 1,
following the infant's birth by caesarian operation.
Ruth was born April 2, 1933 in the Summerfield, Ohio the daughter of Harry and Clara
Ritterbeck Sorg. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Fulda.
Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two daughters, Janet 4 and Vivian
2, a sister, Mrs. Paul (Dorothy) Biedenbach,of near Summerfield, two brothers Earl and
Virgil Sorg of near Glenford.

Name was supposed to be Thomas Jacob, but his mother was ill and could not attend the baptism. George Schockling changed his som's name.
