Joseph J. Miller

In 1860, 20 year old Joseph Miller lived on the family farm with his parents in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. He was born in Virginia. Neighboring farms in the census belonged to William Johanning and Sylvester Snider.

At the time of the 1870 census, Virginia-born farmer Joseph Miller (30) lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his pregnant wife Katherine (23) and daughters Elizabeth (2) and Mary (1). No one in the household could read or write. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Ephraim Hupp and Joseph's father, John Miller.

In June 1880, Joseph Miller (39) and his pregnant wife Catherine (31) lived in Enoch Twp. with their seven children Elizabeth (12), Mary (11), Barbary (10), Francis (8), Mary Ann (6), Catherine (5), and Nicholas (2). The oldest five children attended school. This census disagrees with earlier ones on Joseph's place of birth: Ohio. Neighboring households in the census were those of Michael Blake and Ambrose Smith.

In 1900, 60 year old farmer Joseph Miller lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 52 year old wife Catherine and six children: Mary (25), Nicholas (22), Rosa (20), John (17), Christina (14), and Benny (10). According to the census, Joseph was born in Ohio to German-born parents. (The 1850, 1860, and 1910 census entries state that he was born in (West) Virginia.) Joseph spoke English, but could not read or write. None of the women in the house spoke English. Only Joseph's sons could read, write, and speak English. Only Benny attended school during the previous year.

At the time of the 1910 census, 69 year old farmer Joseph Miller lived with his wife of 45 years Catharina (63) on a farm they owned in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Nick (31), John A. (27), Ben (20), Rose (25) and Mary A. (35). The three boys' occupation is given as farm laborer on the census form. All members of the household except Joseph were born in Ohio. Joseph was born in West Virginia. Joseph's and Catharina's parents were born in Germany. Joseph, Catharina, Rose and Mary could neither read nor write. Nick, Ben and John could read and write. Neighboring farms were owned by John Merry, Lewis G. Dimmerling, Catharina Blake, Adam Nau, Philip Hohman and John Miller (no known relation).


Anna Katharina Crum

According to the census, all 11 of Catherine Crum Miller's children were alive in 1900. Catherine did not read, write, or speak English.

The 1900 and 1920 census entries believed to be that of Catherine's daughter, Elizabeth Miller Ebbert, states that her mother was born "at sea."

According to Catherine Miller's Certificate of Death, she was born in Ohio on December 14, 1846 to Frank Crum and Mary Christ both of whom were born in Germany. At the time of her death, she was married and lived in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. She died on August 16, 1910 of chronic gastritis and acute enteritis and was buried in Fulda, Ohio on August 19, 1910.


Mary Anna Miller

Records conflict on year of birth: Nov 1874 (1900 census) vs. 16 Nov 1873 (Snider).

Mary A. Miller was unmarried and lived with her parents at the time of the 1900 and 1910 census. The 1900 census states that Mary could not read, write, or speak English. According to the obituary of her sister, Barbara Miller Schafer, Mary lived in Zanesville in 1939.

According to her death certificate, Mary Anna Miller was born in Enoch Twp., Ohio on November 16, 1874 to Joseph John Miller and Catherine Crum Her father was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and her mother in Enoch Twp., Ohio. At the time of her death on January 10, 1942 she was a resident of Center Twp., Ohio and she died in the "County Home" in Center Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Her cause of death is given as "general decline of health with age, has been more or less feable minded for years. Geo fasticular illness." She was buried on January 13, 1942 in Fulda, Ohio.


Catharina Miller

Twenty-five year old Catherine Miller did not live with her parents and siblings at the time of the 1900 census. She is not listed as a surviving sibling in the 1939 obituary of her sister, Barbara Miller Schafer.


Nicholas Miller

Nicholas Miller lived and worked on the family farm with his parents and siblings at the time of the 1900 and 1910 census.

In 1920, 42 year old unmarried Nicolas Miller owned a farm in Enoch Twp., Noble Count y, Ohio. He lived alone. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Henry Hohman and Adam Nau .

In 1930, 52 year old unmarried Nick Miller owned a farm worth $350 in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He lived alone. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Henry Blake and Adam Nau.

According to the obituary of his sister, Barbara Miller Schafer, Nicholas lived in Fulda in 1939.

According to his death certificate, Nicholas Miller was born on December 26, 1877 in Fulda, Noble Co., Ohio to Josehp Miller and Catherine Crum. His father was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and his mother in Fulda, Noble Co. Ohio. At the time of his death on December 13, 1946 he resided at Rural Rt. 4, Caldwell, Noble Co., Ohio although he had been living and died at 522 Gray St., Zanesville, Muskingum Co., Ohio [the home of his brother Benjamin] for four months prior to his death. The cause of death is given as "carcinoma of the throat." He was buried on December 16, 1946 in Fulda (St. Mary's), Noble Co., Ohio.

Nicholas Miller's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on December 14, 1946. Nicholas Miller, 68, of Caldwell, died Friday night at the
home of his brother, Benjamin Miller, 522 Gray street. He is survived by three brothers, John Miller, of Newark,
Frank Miller, of Braddock, Pa., and Benjamin at whose
home he died, and a sister, Mrs. John Graser, of Johns-
town, Pa. The body was removed to the Estadt funeral home in
Caldwell.


John Henry Miller

In 1900, 17 year old John Miller lived and worked on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio.


John Miller

At the time of the 1850 census, 49 year old German-born farmer John Miller lived in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his 46 year old wife Catherine and their son Joseph (10). John Miller could not read or write. Joseph attended school. John's real estate was valued at $150. The neighboring farms in the census belonged to Jacob Schott and Michael Blake.

In 1860, 60 year old farmer John Miller lived in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio with his 57 year old wife Catherine and their son Joseph (20). John and his wife were born in Hesse Cassel. The households adjacent to the Miller farm were J. William Johanning and Sylvester Snider.

In 1870, John Miller (70) was a retired farmer living in Enoch Twp. with his wife Kathrina (67). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to two different men named Joseph Miller. One of these was John and Katherine's son. The relationship between the other Joseph Miller and John Miller is not known.

At the time of the 1880 census, there were two 78 year old widowers named John Miller living in Enoch Twp. One lived alone in Enoch Twp. His farm was located in the census between the farms of Joseph Hohman and R. L. Bramhall. The other lived as a boarder in the home of 40 year old widow Flora (Debold) Schaffer. That household was adjacent to the farms of widow Margaret Hupp and widow Elizabeth (Miller) Hupp (no relation).

On 12 Jul 1883, the Fulda column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
Died -- At his residence, John Miller, one of the old
German settlers of Enoch township, aged 84 years.


Anna Katharina Brotzman

The 1860 census states that Katherine Miller was born in Hesse. The 1870 census says Saxe Wimar, although her husband's place of birth is Hesse Cassel. The fact that they came from different areas of Germany may indicate that they were married in the United States. Katherine could not read or write.


Joseph Taylor

In 1910, Joseph (30) and Mary (29) Taylor owned a home at 305 Oakland Ave. in North Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Other members of the household were their daughter Agnes (1) and boarder named Katie Crum. Katie was probably Mary's first cousin, Catherine Crum, daughter of Lawrence Crum. According to the census, Katie and Mary were both born in Ohio, as were their parents. Joseph Taylor and his daughter were born in Pennsylvania, as were his parents. Joseph worked as a laborer on the railroad.

At the time of the 1920 census, Joseph and Mary Taylor still owned the home at 305 Oakland Ave., where they lived with their daughters Agnes (11), Helen (9), and Louise (5). The two older girls attended school. Joseph was a laborer at the Edgar Thompson Steel Works.

In 1930, Joseph Taylor (50) and his wife Mary (49) owned a home at 1040 Jones St. in North Braddock. Living with them was their 21 year old daughter, Agnes. Joseph's father and mother were born in Pennsylvania and Germany, respectively. Joseph was a laborer in a steel mill. The Taylor family owned a radio set.


Mary Anna Crum

Mary Crum's birth was noted in the Caldwell Citizens' Press on 30 Sep 1880:
Births... on the 20th to Jos. and Mary Krum, a daughter.

Mary Crum lived with her father, step mother, and four younger sisters at the time of the 1900 census. She was 19 at the time. According to the death notice of her sister, Barbara Crock, Mary Taylor was livng in Pittsburgh in 1947, as was her step-sister, Lucy Crum Logan.


Agnes Taylor

In 1930, 21 year old Agnes Taylor lived with her parents in North Braddock, PA. She was employed as sales lady in a shoe store.


Louise Taylor

Louise did not live with the family at the time of the 1930 census. She would have been about 16 years old at the time.


William Henry Archer

In 1930, W. H. Archer (46) owned a farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with him were his wife, Celia E. (41) and children Howard J. (19), Bernard W. (15), Paul L. (12), Clara R. (10), Irene A. (8), and James F. (6). All of the children attended school except James. The Archers did not own a radio. Neighboring farms in the census belonged to John Leo Dimmerling and William Craig.


Cecilia E. Crum

Cecelia Crum Archer's obituary appeared in The Zanesville [OH] Times on 4 Mar 1976 (pg 11 A)
SUMMERFIELD -- Mrs. Cecelia E. Archer, 86, of Caldwell Route 1, died at 3:30 a.m.
Wednesday in Marietta Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Archer was born March 22, 1889 in Noble County. She was a member of St.
Mary's Catholic Church in Fulda and its Catholic Women's Club. Surviving are her husband,
William H. of Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell, whom she married in 1910; three
sons, Paul of Harriettsville, James of Sharon, and Andrew of Caldwell Route 4; three daughters,
Mrs. Harley (Clara) Morrison of Marietta, Mrs. Albert (Irene) Hupp, and Mrs. Cletus (Lucy)
Dick of Woodsfield; 52 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Friends may call at Brubach Funeral Home 7 to 9 p.m. and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be
in the church cemetery.


Howard J. Archer

Obituary:
CRASH FATAL TO HOWARD ARCHER
CALDWELL - The body of Howard Archer, 39, Noble county native who
was intantly killed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in an auto accident in Dahlonga, Ga.,
is being returned here for funeral services and burial. Arrangements are incomplete
but the body will be taken from Cambridge to the home of his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. William H. Archer near here by the Brubach funeral home of Summerfield.
Archer, a World War II veteran, when he was in the engineering corps in the
South Pacific as a sergeant, had been employed in the south by the Tennessee Pipe-
line company which is now building a pumping station near here. Surviving are his
parents; four brothers, Bernard of Caldwell Route 1, Paul of near Dexter City, James
and Andrew of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Morrison of Marietta, Mrs. Irene
Hupp of Caldwell Route 4, and Miss Lucy of the home. The father is the head of the
Noble County Production Marketing Association and the family is well known.
Nature of the accident was not disclosed in the message received by the parents.
The body was scheduled to leave Georgia yesterday.

Howard Archer's death certificate listed him as a resident of Lumpkin County, Georgia.


Henry Louis Kullman

In the 1900 census, 31 year old farm laborer Henry Coleman lived in a rented house in Marion Twp, Noble County Ohio with his 27 year old wife Jemima. (Wife's name is difficult to read, but begins with Je----). They had been married for six years and had a five year old daughter, Mary C. Henry was born in Ohio. His father and mother were born in Germany and Ohio, respectively. Henry and his wife could both read and write.

At the time of the 1910 census, Henry L. Kullman (41) and his wife, Jemima G. (39) owned a mortgaged home at 1016 Pine St. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Jemima had given birth to two children, both of whom were still living. Other members of the household were their two daughters, Jessie S. (8) and Mary C. Clapper (15), and Mary's husband, George Clapper (21). Jessie attended school. Henry worked as a laborer in the tile works, and George was a factory worker. According to the census, everyone in the home was a native of Ohio, as were their parents.

In 1920, Henry (56) and Jemima (49) owned a home at 1012 Pine St. in Zanesville. Living with them were their daughter, Jessie (18) and Henry's father-in-law, widower John Harbin (72). Henry's older daughter Carmen and her husband George Clapper owned the house next door (1016 Pine St.). Jessie attended school. Everyone in the household had been born in Ohio, as had their parents, with the exception of Henry's father, who was German. Henry worked as a mold maker in the tile works. His father-in-law was a machinist in a bakery.

Henry (61) and Jemima (59) lived in the same house in 1930. Henry was retired. His married daughters lived in the house next door with their families. The Kullmans owned a radio set.

Henry Kullman's [Coleman] obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on December 30, 1934.
HEART ATTACK IS SUDDENLY FATAL TO PINE ST. MAN
Henry Kullman Dies Suddenly at Home Saturday; funeral Tuesday
Henry Kullman, 66, of 1012 Pine street, died suddenly late Saturday at
his home. He had been ill for some time but was said to be improving.
Death was attributed to heart failure.
He was born and received his early training in Fulda coming to Zanes-
ville at the age of 35. He spent the remainder of his life here. Mr. Kullman
was a former employee of the Standard Tile company.
Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Carmen Clapper or route 1 and Mrs.
Jesse Brandpass of the home, five brothers John Kullman of Wheeling,
W. Va. also one sister Mrs Mary Sarg [Sorg] of Carlisle.
The body is at the Keck funeral home but will be taken to the residence
Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock
at the home. Burial will be made in Woodlawn.

Jemima G. Harbin

From the 1900 census: Henry Coleman's wife was born in Ohio, as were her parents. She had given birth to one child, who was still living at the time of the census.

Jennie Kullman’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Signal on 9 May 1931:
SHORT ILLNESS IS FATAL TODAY TO MRS. H.L. KULLMAN
Mrs. Jennie Kullman, aged 61, wife of Henry L. Kullman, 1012 Pine street
died at Good Samaritan hospital at 5 o’clock Saturday morning. She was
admitted to the hospital on Monday. Mrs. Kullman was born in East Union,
Noble county, and was married to Mr. Kullman on March 24, 1894. She had
resided in this city for a number of years and was a member of Clover Street
Free Methodist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Kullman are the husband, two daughters, Mrs. Carmen
Clapper and Mrs. Jesse Brandfass, both of Pine street, two grandchildren
and two brothers. They are Dale Harbin, Oak avenue and Crippes Harbin
Coshocton.
The body was removed to the Keck funeral home and will late Saturday
be taken to the home, where the funeral will be held at 2 o’clock Monday
afternoon. It will be private. Friends wishing to view the remains may call
before noon Monday. Burial will be in Woodlawn.

William Logan

In 1930, William and Lucy Logan (both 37 years old) lived in part of a two-family house at 6072 Italian St. in Pittsburgh's 11th Ward. Their rent was $80 a month... very high compared to many of their neighbors. They had no children, but there were two lodgers living with them: Elmer Harrington and Mary Maquillo. William and his parents were natives of Missouri. He and Lucy had been married for 10 years. William's occupation was "general labor." He was a veteran of World War I.


Anna Lucia Crum

Anna was not living with her sisters and widowed mother at the time of the 1910 Census. Records conflict on date of birth: 30 May 1891 (Snider) vs. May 1890 (1900 census). According to the death notice of her sister, Barbara Crock, Lucy Logan was livng in Pittsburgh in 1947, as was her step-sister, Mary Taylor. Lucy was still living in Pittsburgh at when her sister Amelia Crum Sorg died in 1972. At that time, Lucy was married to a man named Frey. Lucy is the only person with the surname Frey buried in Braddock Catholic Cemetery.

According to the death notice of her sister, Barbara Crock, Lucy Logan was livng in Pittsburgh in 1947, as was her step-sister, Mary Taylor. Lucy was still living in Pittsburgh at when her sister Amelia Crum Sorg died in 1972. At that time, Lucy was married to a man named Frey. Lucy is the only person with the surname Frey buried in Braddock Catholic Cemetery.


Sylvanus Archer

In 1880, Sylvanius Archer (35), lived with his parents in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He worked as a carpenter.

From the 1900 census: 52 year old Sylvanus Archer lived on a farm that he owned in Stock Twp.with his 37 year old wife Hulda, and their three children: Harvey (16), William (12), and Beatrice (4). No occupation is listed for Sylvester Archer. The boys attended school in 1900, but Beatrice did not. According to the census, Hulda had given birth to three children, all of whom were living. Sylvanus' father and step-mother, Simon and Celia Archer, lived next door.

According to the 1900 census, Hulda and her parents were born in Ohio. All three of Hulda Bates Archer's children were still living in 1900.
