Raymond Kress

The following appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on April 25, 1935: STORE CHANGES HANDS E.H. Crock, proprietor of Fulda general store for the past fifteen years,
has sold his interest to Claude Fox and Raymond Kress, both young
men of that vicinity. The new owners have taken possession. Fox and Kress are the owners of the only other general store in Fulda
and it is the plan to merge the two and make one big general store. Mr.
Crock plans to devote all his two large farms in the Fulda vicinity.

The following news story appeared in the Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on Oct 30, 1937:
BLAZE DESTROYS STORE AT FULDA
CALDWELL -- Fanned by a strong wind, a fire of unknown origin swept through
the general store owned by Raymond G. Kress at Fulda, 10 miles east of here,
burning the building to the ground and destroying the entire stock this morning.
The blaze was first noticed by Ed Crock, who lives in an adjoining house. A bucket
brigade was organized but its efforts proved futile.
The frame building burned rapidly and fire raged uncontrolled before assistance
could be called from any of the neighboring towns. The damage was estimated at
nearly $4500, part of which was covered by insurance.
Every effort was made to save the building but when it was found that the blaze
could not be extinguished the volunteers turned their attention toward preventing the
fire from spreading to surrounding houses.
A search through the ruins was started immediately in an effort to shed some light
on the cause.

Although she was just a small child when he died, Ray's niece, Janalyn Crum Huffman, recalls:
I can still picture his face and remember some funny moments with him. I remember the
time he had a "plug" of Red Man Chewing Tobacco. I was very interested in it and so he
told me to take a bite. I DID! (I must say that I never smoked and to this day have problems
around tobacco!)

on the Emil Miller farm near Fulda and Kress’ body was discovered by Miller

been dead about four hours. The tractor apparently struck a large rock, causing it
to overturn, the coroner said.

of the late Louis and Mary Biedenbach Kress. He was a member of St. Philomena
Catholic church here and was past president of the Holy Name society of the church.

Also living in the household was Lewis' widowed aunt, Missouri native Lizzie [Hill] Gerst (74). Lizzie was the widow of John D. Gerst.

In the 1930 census, the family surname was mis-indexed as "Russ." Loius (59) and Mary (56) Kress owned a farm worth $300 in Enoch Twp. (This value is considerably less than other farms. Farms on that page of the census had average value of $930.) Living with Louis and Mary were their two sons, Gilbert (18) and Raymond (15), both of whom attended school. Everyone in the home was a native of Ohio. According to the census, Mary's father and mother were from Germany and Ohio, respectively. Louis' parents were born in West Virginia.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kress and sons Gilbert and Raymond of Caldwell attended the annual Schott reunion on Sunday, July 30, 1933 at the fairgrounds in Marietta, Ohio. See notes of Jacob Schott for a complete list of attendees.

They are listed immediately after her parents household, where most of her younger siblings lived. She lived with her brother John and his wife Laura at the time of the 1910 Census.
