Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

John Joseph Kress

Although 12 year old John Krass attended school in 1880, the census states that he could not read or write.

There is no proof that John Kress, husband of Jennie Gallagher and John Kress, son of Anton Kress are the same person. In support of this is the fact that the year of birth for John (husband of Jennie) in the 1900 census matches the year of birth of John, son of Anton. Further research needs to be done to confirm or refute the relationship.

At the time of the 1900 census, John (33) and Jennie (34) Kress owned a farm in Independence Twp., Washington County, Ohio. Living with them were their children Fredrick (9), Allice (7), and Bernard (4), and in-laws Patrick (81) and Catherine (80) Gallagher. Also living in the household was a 17 year old servant named Maggie Melite. The census stated that John and the children were born in Ohio. Jennie was born in Iowa. John's parents were natives of Germany. Jennie's parents were from Ireland. John's month of birth is faint and illegible in the census, but the year of birth is 1867.

In 1910, John Kress (44) still lived in Independence Township with his wife Jennie (44), children Fred (19), Alice (17), Bernard (13, Clarence (8), Charley (6) and Agnes (11 mos.), and his widowed father-in-law Patrick Gallagher (93). According to the census, John's parents were born in the United States. Everyone in the home was a native of Ohio except Jennie, who was born in Iowa, and her father, who was Irish, according to the census.

In 1920, farmer John Kress (53) and his wife Jennie (54) lived in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with their children Bernard (23), Charles (18), Clarence (15), and Agnes (10). Clarence and Agnes attended school.

Marie Katherine Huffman

Marie Huffman's short life was filled with tragedy. Two of her four children (Ruth and Evelyn) died at birth. In the late fall of 1948, baby Kay became listless and ill. The family took the child to the doctor several times, but she seemed to perk up at the doctor's office, and he could find nothing wrong. Back in the home, Kay would again become lethargic. The doctor eventually suggested giving Kay some Karo syrup (corn syrup) when she seemed listless.

It turned out that the source of Kay's illness was a faulty gas stove in the family's home. Kay was the most susceptible to the fumes, because she spent the most time in the house and because she was so young. On November 26, Marie was attempting to give Kay some Karo syrup when she, the baby, and seven year old son Eddie all succumbed to the carbon monoxide fumes from the stove. Jake Schoeppner came home from work to find his wife and children had died. Marie was just 31 years old.
