Nelson William Smithberger

The following wedding announcement appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on September 16, 1937:
ELLA ZWICK WEDS MR. SMITHBERGER Ceremony Performed in Burkhart Church SUMMERFIELD -- Miss Ella Zwick, daughter of Charles Zwick, Lewisville, and Nelson Smithberger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smithberger, Lewisville, were united in marriage Tuesday morning in St. Joseph's church Burkhart with Reverend Father Joseph Fruan performing the nuptial mass in the presence of immediate families and some guests. Miss Edna Zwick sister of the bride and Charles Morrison attended the couple. The bride wore a beautiful gown of white satin with a veil and Miss Zwick's dress was of pink silk. In the evening a reception was tendered the newlyweds at the Zwick home with a large number of presents. Social amusements were enjoyed and a lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Smithberger were recipients of a number of beautiful gifts. For the present they will reside with the bride's father.

Ella Ann Smithberger, 94, of the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, Ohio (formerly of Lewisville, Ohio) died Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the center. She was born near Lewisville, Ohio on May 21, 1916 a daughter of the late Charles and Gertrude Crock Zwick. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Ohio where she was also a member of the Catholic Women's Club and the St. Francis Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Smithberger; a daughter, Donna Bolon; a brother, Carl Zwick; a sister, Gertrude Sorg; two daughters-in-law, Mary Smithberger and Eiko Smithberger; and a great granddaughter, Deanna Smithberger. Surviving are one daughter; Nina (Daryl) Highman of Senecaville, Ohio, three sons; James Smithberger and Jacob Smithberger both of Lewisville, Ohio, and Kiven (Melissa) Smithberger of Woodsfield, Ohio, two sisters; Edna Bjorkman of Homeworth, Ohio, and Mary Kress of Alliance, Ohio, one brother; Charles (Jo Ann) Zwick of Caldwell, Ohio, thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday. Funeral liturgy with mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Ohio with Rev. Fr. David Gaydosik officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Sylvester Cemetery, Woodsfield, Ohio. Vigil services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Carl Andrew Zwick
Pompano Beach, Fla. - Services for Carl Andrew Zwick, 80, of 311 NW
48th Court, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Walton-Schrader funeral
home in Alliance, Ohio, with the Rev. Jeffrey Mickler officiating. Burial
will be in Highland Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 11 a. m. until the time of service Saturday at
the funeral home.
Mr. Zwick died at 4:55 p. m. Monday at his home. A son of Charles
and Gertrude (Crock) Zwick, he was born March 14, 1918, in Lewisville,
Ohio. A former resident of the Alliance area, he had lived in Pompano
Beach 24 years. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II serving
at Pearl Harbor. Mr. Zwick was a member of George D. Worth American
Legion Post 574.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Doris Ann (Gregory); a son, Charles
R. Zwick of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Carol A. Johnson of Pompano
Beach; and Deborah S. Rowell of Cumming, Ga.; a brother, Charles Zwick
of Caldwell, Ohio; four sisters, Ella Smithberger of Lewisville, Gertrude
Sorg of Mount Perry, Ohio, Mary Kress of Alliance, and Edan Bjorkman
of Sebring, Ohio; and six grandchildren. (4-2-98) Thursday.

Obituary:
ZANESVILLE - Earl L. Sorg, 82, of Mt. Perry, died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday Feb 27,
2000 at his residence, following a sudden illness. Born Aug. 16, 1917, in Somerfield [sic],
Mr. Sorg was a former Dekalb Seed representative, a retired West Muskingum school bus
driver, and a retired farmer. He was a 50 year member of the Timber Run Grange, Knights
of Columbus Council 505, and St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife, Gertrude E. Zwick Sorg of the home, six daughters and sons in
law, Shirley and Terry Cooperrider of Newark, Patricia and Frank Rubeck of Jackson, Tenn.,
Deloers and Jerry Gibson of Cambridge, Sandy and Dan Backus of Zanesville, Becky and
Rod Smith of Zanesville, and Michelle and Frank Dosch of Zanesville; one son and daughter-
in-law, Dick and Becky Sorg of Mt. Perry; 10 grandchildren, Shawn and Jon Decker of
Newark, Patrick and Beth Cooperrider of Newaark, Kim and Mark Skaug of Racine, Wis.,

SUMMERFIELD -- Earl Sorg, Louisville, Stark county, and Miss Gertrude Zwick,
Lewisville, are announcing their marriage which took place recently in Kentucky.
The bride is a daughter of Charles Zwick and attended the Lewisville schools.
She is a member of St. Joseph church, burkhart. The bridegroom is a son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Sorg, near here, and attended the local schools. He is a member
of St. Michael's church, Berne.
Mr. and Mrs. Sorg has established their home near Louisville where he is employed
on a dairy farm.

ZANESVILLE -- Gertrude E. Sorg, 79, of Mount Perry, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday
Nov. 27, 2000 at her residence. Born Sept. 27, 1921 in Lewisville, she attended St.

Mary Agnes Zwick

The following wedding announcement was published in the Zanesville Signal, accompanied by a photo of the bride:
Miss Mary Agnes Zwick, daughter of Charles I. Zwick of
Lewisville Route 3, Monroe county became the bride of Norbert Louis
Kress, son of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Kress of Alliance on November
29th. The ceremony was performed by Rev. V. G. Schiele at St. Jos-
eph’s church at Burkhart Station on Lewisville Route 3. Mr. and Mrs.
Kress will make their home with the bridegroom’s parents. Mr. Kress
is employed by the Alliance Porcelain Products company.


Another wedding announcement appeared in the Louisville [Stark Co., OH] Herald:
ZWICK - KRESS
Mr. and Mrs. Norbert L. Kress are at home temporarily
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Kress of R. D. 3, Alliance,
following their marriage Saturday, November 29.
The ceremony followed by Nuptial High Mass, was solemn-
ized at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Lewisville, Monroe
County. Rev. V. G. Schiele, pastor of the church, officiated.
The bride, the former Miss Mary Agnes Zwick, daughter
of Charles L. Zwick of Lewisville, wore a wedding frock of white
chiffon fashioned en train with a matching veil. She carried a shower
bouquet of white carnations and fern. Miss Thelma Youtz served as
bridemaid in a gown of blue trimmed with lace that matched the lace in
the bride’s costume. She carried a bouquet of pink [newspaper has a
hole here]. Merton Kress was best man for his brother and both wore
boutonnieres of white carnations.
A wedding breakfast followed the ceremony and took place
in the home of the bride’s father, Charles Zwick. Among the guests
were Mrs. John Kress and Richard Kress of alliance, Mr. and Mrs.
Norbert Brahler and daughter, Elnora of Louisville, Mr. and Mrs. Regis
Michel of Youngstown, Sergis Michel of Caldwell, Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Crock and daughter, Mildred of South Olive, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Smith-
berger and daughter, Donna Mae, Mr. and Mrs. William Youtz and Rev.
Schiele of Lewisville. The bride and bridegroom received many gifts.
Mr. Kress is employed at the Alliance Porcelain Products Co.

Jacob Herbert Smithberger

On Sept. 23, 1918, 34 year old self-employed farmer Jacob Herbert Smithberger of Lower Salem, Washington County Ohio filled out a US military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as January 2nd, 1884. His closest relative was Emma Smithberger. Jacob was described as being tall and thin, with brown eyes and brown hair, and no obvious physical disabilities.

The following note appeared on page 4 of the Zanesville Signal on 8 Jan 1926:
HARRIETTSVILLE -- Jake Smithberger, Ronald Crock,
Lewis and Ralph Ullman, Ed. Ayers and Mr. and Mrs. T. E.
Martin were business callers at Caldwell Monday.

A note in the "Harriettsville" section of the Zanesville Signal on 12 Jan 1932 (pg 7) stated:
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smithberger entertained last Sun-
day with a turkey dinner.

Jacob H. Smithberger’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 1 Mar 1944:
J. H. SMITHBERGER CALLED BY DEATH
WOODSFIELD, O. - Jacob H. Smithberger, 60, died at
his home in Woodsfield Monday. He was the son of William
G. and Catherine E. Smithberger of Elk township, Noble
county. He was united in marriage to Eunice A. Blair on
May 18, 1908.
Surviving him are two sons, Nelson and Ellis, three
brothers, Clemens Smithberger of Woodsfield, Ernest
Smithberger of Marietta, Alfred Smithberger of Columbus;
three sisters, Mrs. John Huffman of Marietta, Mrs. William
Morrison of Rinard Mills, Mrs. William Wesel of Marietta,
and two grandchildren, Donna Mae and Jimmie Smith-
berger. One daughter, Alice Ann preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9 o’clock
(E.S.T.) at St. Sylvester’s church in Woodsfield, in charge
of W. P. Gardner of Staford, O. The body will remain at
the home from Tuesday evening until time for the services.

Obituary:
Mary E. Smithberger, 59, of 33267 Railroad Street, Lewisville, Ohio, died at 7:40 p.m., Friday, June 9, 2006, at the Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling, W.Va.
She was born at Somerset, Ohio, on October 2, 1946, a daughter of the late Leroy and Goldie Huntsman Swallie.
She was a homemaker and a former employee of the former L.G.A.M. Manufacturing in Woodsfield, Ohio, and a Protestant by faith. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, bingo and was an avid bowler.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Luella Howell, Pauline Milhoan and Sharon Clark; two brothers, James Floyd Swallie and Allen Derward Swallie.
Surviving are her husband James Smithberger whom she married on December 2nd 1967; two daughters: Anita Delong of Stafford, Ohio, and Kim Smithberger of Ashland, Ohio; two sisters: Dauline Tubaugh of Ravenna, Ohio, and Dorothy Gray of Barnesville, Ohio; five brothers: Ronald Swallie of Bridgeport, Ohio; Clesson Swallie of Belmont, Ohio; Donald Swallie, Richard Swallie and Jim Swallie all of Barnesville, Ohio; four grandchildren: Skye Roe, Jessica Smithberger, Cody Stimpert and Raven Delong; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday with services at 11 a.m., Wednesday, with Rev. Frank Conley officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville, Ohio.

LEWISVILLE, Ohio - Eiko G. Smithberger, 57, of 33219 Back St. died at 10:49 a.m. Wednesday (April 14, 2004) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.
She was born Aug. 25, 1946, in Naha City, Okinawa, Japan, to Hideko Gaja Kuba. She was a secretary for Ako Hardwood in Lewisville.
She is survived by her husband, Jacob Smithberger, whom she married on Jan. 5, 1967; two daughters, Mrs. Danny (Cindy) Graham and Mrs. Jamie (Tess) Hill, both of Woodsfield; four sisters, Kazuko Arbogast of Clarksville, Tenn., Mieko Kuba, Sueko Kuba and Terume Kuba, all of Naha City, Okinawa, Japan; one brother, Yoshio Kuba of Naha City, Okinawa, Japan; seven grandchildren, Tyler, Courtney, Dustin and Macey Graham, and Jacob, Kory and Camden Hill; her mother-in-law, Ella Smithberger; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother; one brother, Menoru Kuba; one granddaughter, Deanna Smithberger; and her father-in-law, Nelson Smithberger.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Watters Funeral Home in Woodsfield with the Rev. David Gaydosik officiating. Burial is in Friendship Cemetery in Lewisville. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
