Daniel Leo Dugan

Note: Hough gives place of birth as Old Wall, PA; while Maurer gives it as Pittsburgh, PA.

Daniel Dugan was a railroad engineer. The family moved from Braddock, PA to the Chicago area around 1925. The old family homestead is on the South Side, near Midway Airport, and most of the family is still in the Chicago area.

One of the family traditions is the Dugan Open (golf), started around 1963. Back then it was an annual event, with a big trophy donated by a friend of the family when Grandpa (Daniel) Dugan died in 1965. There was always a big party afterwards. Now it's a little less regular.

Granddaughter Mary Beth Dugan Mitchell says:
Another tradition is that family funerals usually involve a golf tournament. Anything happens to one of us, bring your sticks. It started when Grandma Dugan died in August, 1972. The two out-of-town uncles were there, plus her brother John Schweinberg (who I think is still alive, in Pittsburgh) and a few other honored guests. I'll never forget my father, the oldest son, gathering up all his brothers at the funeral luncheon on Saturday, saying that while Tom and John were here we might as well play the Open tomorrow. John was moving cross-country, from L.A. to New Orleans, on Monday so he said, have a good time but I have to fly back tomorrow, so they decided to play it that day. Back then it was men-only. I was in college then, left behind with the women and children to plan the party. It was only slightly subdued. Believe me, Grandma was much loved and respected, it's just our Irish way of dealing with grief. "She always loved the Open, it was our best time together, so she'd be happy..." was the rationalization heard all day.
