Peter Craft

In 1860, 18 year old Peter Kraft (Croft) lived and worked on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. According to the census, Peter was born in Ohio and attended school during the previous year.

At the time of the 1870 census, Peter Craft (28) still lived and worked on his parents' farm with six of his siblings. According to the census, he could read and write.

In 1880, farmer Peter Craft (35) lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Martha (31) and daughters Clara (5) and Flora (2). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Leonard Hill and George Dixon. Peter's parents lived two doors away.

An article in the Caldwell Citizens' Press on 14 Oct 1880 stated:
Peter Craft, of this place, in lifting injured himself internally, he is seemingly
recovering.

At the time of the 1900 census, 58 year old farmer Peter Craft lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 48 year old wife Martina and three children: Flora (22), Edward (18), and Barbara (16). None of the children attended school. Peter, who was born in (West) Virginia to German-born parents, spoke English but could not read or write.

In 1910, 68 year old widower Peter Craft lived with his 26 year old daughter Barbara in Noble County Ohio. The census indicates that he was born in West Virginia. (West Virginia did not become a state until 1863; prior to that it was part of Virginia.) The surname is spelled Craft in the census index.

Peter Kraft's (Craft's) obituary appeared in The Times Signal (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on December 27, 1924.
Summerfield, O., Dec. 27. -- Peter Kraft, aged 83, a well known
resident of the Fulda vicinity, died suddenly Wednesday noon. He
suffered a stroke of paralysis some time ago but had been in his
usual health and had finished his dinner and gotten up from the table
when he passed away. Three children survive.
The funeral was held Saturday morning in the Fulda Catholic
church and was in charge of his pastor, Rev. Father Oeink, and
burial was made in the Fulda cemetery. Undertaker O. B. Brubach
of this place had charge of the funeral.

Martina Schmitt

The 1900 census entry for Martina (Schmitt) Craft contains conflicting information. Her age is 48 (1852), but her date of birth is given as Nov 1867 (which would make her 33 -- only seven years older than her oldest child.) The census entry -- which is very legible -- also states that she came to America in 1840 and has been here for 60 years. Finally, the census records that Martina had four children, all of whom were alive in 1900. This conflicts with church records, which show that she had five children, four of whom are known to be alive in 1900. The missing child is Margaret, wass born in 1879.

Margaret Craft

The 1900 census entry for Margaret Kraft's mother, Martina Schmitt Craft, states that Martina only had 4 children, all of whom were living at the time of the census. Church records indicate that Martina had five children, four of whom are known to be alive in 1900. Margaret does not appear with the family in the 1880 or 1900 census. Margaret Kraft's date of death is not known, but it's presumed to be prior to 1880.

Harry Oscar Singer

Sources conflict on date of birth:

Harry and Angie Singer did not have any children.
