Jacob S. Haren Sr.

In 1870, Jacob Haren (36) and his wife Margaret (29) lived in Woodsfield, Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with their sons John (7), Franklin (5), and Jacob S. (3). Also living with the family was a 14 year old "domestic servant" named Elizabeth Weisent. Elizabeth was the only child in the household who attended school. The relationship (if any) between the Haren family and Elizabeth Weisent is not known at this time. Jacob's real estate was valued at $6000, and his personal possessions were worth $1080. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to William Yocum and Jacob's older brother Peter Haren.

At the time of the 1880 census, Jacob (40) and Mary Ann (39) Haren were still living in Malaga Twp. next to Jacob's brother Peter Haren. Living with them were their children John (17), Frank (15), Jacob (13), Clement (9), Leo (6), Rosella (5) and Mary Ann (3). The boys all attended school, although for varying lengths of time... John and Frank went for only four months, Jacob for six, Clement for 7, and Leo for only two months. The girls were too young to attend school. The Haren;s other neighbor in the census was the family of Joseph Baker.

Mary Ann Burkhart

Jacob Haren's wife is refered to as Margaret in the 1870 census.

In 1900, widow Mary Burkhardt Haren (59) owned a farm in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. She lived there with three of her unmarried sons, Frank (34), Leo S. (26), and Albert (19), and her widowed brother Adam Haren (43). Everyone in the household could read and write English except Mary. No occupation was listed for Mary. The census states that she had given birth to 11 children, 8 of whom were still living in 1900.

Mary and her son Frank were listed as owning the farm. Also listed as owners of the farm, and living in the same dwelling were unmarried David Baker and his widowed sister, Margaret Baker Riesbeck. Two of Margaret's adult children (John and Mary) lived on the farm as well. The widow of Mary's cousin, Michael B. Burkhart, Rosa Smithberger Burkhart, lived two doors away. Mary's niece, Isabelle Haren (daughter of Peter Haren), would later marry David Baker.

In 1930, Samuel Womack (51) and his wife Kathryn M. (46) owned a farm in Olive Township, Noble County, Ohio. Also living in the home were their children Eva (17), Kathryn (12), George (10), James (8) and Gloria (4 yrs 7 mos). Kathryn, George and James attended school. Hi Jackie & Ted; Sat.
Hope you two are well so far. I was sick all last week end. From Sat. afternoon till friday evening. Guess I had the flue. I was down to visit Louise & Mary last friday evening. Came back on Sat. afternoon. Louise knew a little more on our family tree than I. But not much. Here it is.
One of your Great, Great, Great Grandparents name was Clay. Another one was Shaub. Both English. Margaret Clay married Peter Ruppel a German. They are your Great, Great Grandparents. A Shaub married Lohn Lorey Sr. a German. They are your Great, Great Grandparents. He was (John Lorey) killed in the Civil War. Now Eve Ruppel married John J. Lorey, both German & English mixed. They are your Great Grandparents.
Elizabeth Lorey married Chalmer M. Gersper both mixed German and English, your Grandparents. The Indian in us came from your Mom’s Dad’s side of the family. The John Lorey killed at Gettysburgh was about 1/3 Indian. No one knows how far back the Indian blood started. Also, your Great Great Grandma Lorey after the Civil War ended married a Holman. And had 2 more kids, a boy and a girl. I can remember them only as I went to the girl’s funeral when I was 19 yrs. old. That was about 1948 when she died. She was over 80 I think & married to a Warner. We also have some Lori’s Millers’s Palmer’s, Sunderland’s Womach’s, Davis as relation here in Ohio. There must be over a 200 or more distant relations in Noble county, Ohio alone on Mom’s side of the family. And the only Gerspers I know of is from Mom & Dad.
Mom’s family is
Kate
Margaret - She was called Maggie
Elizabeth - Mom was called Beth or Lizzie
Emma
Veronica - They called her Leona or Frona
Cecily
William - He was called Willie
Anna - or Annie
Lillie
Raymond
Louise - Born Jan 7 about 74 now
Mary - She was 72 Dec. 7
Carl - He was 70 March 28

If I can find out anything more I will write to you about it. We have Roots in Germany, Wales & England & America Indian.
Hope every one down there are OK. Tell all I said hi. Write soon.

Uncle Lew
P.S. Beth, Bernies girl goes in the hospital some time this month. She has Gallstones & bladder trouble. I guess they will operate on her.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Friday
Hi Jackie & Ted;
We had 4” of snow Wed. evening. But all has melted on the roads and side walks today. I still have 6” in my yard of old snow. It’s around 40o out now.
We are still working 4 days a week at Timkens. And I like it. Sunday night I go in 2 hrs. early so I get 34 hrs. a week plus one hr. over time that way.
I got your letter this week, also one from Bern & Millie, Aunts Louise & Mary. All are ok so far. My Cats are ok and so am I. Glad you two are too.
Andy is sure dumb to quit school. So are his parents for letting him. He will never have a good paying job. Sure hope Ted gets his R.R. job. Does Andy ever ask about me? If he was up here, he turned 18 I would take him to Timken some times. You hit it lucky. I got Danny on, he quit school at 16 yrs. and in the 9th grade. He runs a machine & makes over $8.00 an hour on it. He’s on piece work like I am.
Oh yes, Mom’s side of the family tree, I will try to give you some to you now. Her Dad’s name was John Lorey, Mom’s name Eva Rupple or Eve. I will find out when I see my Aunts. She was a twin, her brother’s name was Adam.
John & Eve Lorey had 13 kids.
Kate, Maggie, Elizabeth, Cecily, Emma, Leona, Lillie, Raymond, Anna, Louse, William, Mary & Carl.
Maggie died at 12 yrs. old.
Cecily died around 8 yrs. old.
William died at 22 months old.
All of the black death. I don’t know if I have them in order or not. Will get them from Aunt Louise. Oh, yes, I know more of Mom’s family than all the others (your Dad too) put together. Mom’s grandpa Lorey was killed in the Civil War at the battle of Gettysburgh. He was laid to rest there. We have some Indian in us too, on the Lorey side of the family. Our grandpa killed at Gettysburgh looked like he was 1/3 indian. We don’t know what Indian tribe it was, or how far back it started. But I’m proud some of our old relations were Indians as they were here before the Mayflower or even before Columbus found America. Every body tells me I really look like an indian. Aunt Lillie was really proud of our Indian blood. When I see our aunts I will get even more for you.
Tell all I said hi. Tell Mary and Billy I will write them a little later on this week. I will visit Cleveland some time this spring. Write soon.
Love & Prayers
Uncle Lew

P.S. The 3 died within 3 days of each other. Grandpa had to bury them, Grandma and her girl friend laid them out in the caskets. Grandpa took them to their graves. No one came to visit them as all were afraid of the black death. You could take the germs home with you. That was back in the 1890s I believe. Louise may know for sure. They are in the Fluda (sic) cemetery. My grandparents in the Caldwell, or Olive cemetery as it is called. Raymond, Lillie, Annie are in their too.

Uncle Lew

Emma, Mom & Leona are in the Columbus area cemeteries.
