Frederick Burkhart

Sources conflict on date of birth:
9 May 1854 -- researcher Charlie Burkhardt
Jun 1854 -- 1900 census

At the time of the 1900 census, Fred Burkhart (48) owned a farm in Center Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife, Theresa (43), and children Leo (11) and Agnes (9). Fred and Theresa had been married for 12 years, and two of their three children were still living. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Jacob Schwall and William Tidd.

In 1910, Fred F. (56) and Theresa G. Burkhart (53) lived in Center Twp. with their daughter Agnes (19) and a boarder John Southerland (7). Neither Agnes nor John attended school. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. Neighboring farms in the census were those of Levi Fisher and Wendel Burkhart. The relationship (if any) between Fred Burkhart and Wendel Burkhart is not known.

In 1930, Fred (76) and Tressa (73) Burkhart owned a farm worth $1800 in Center Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with them was 26 year old unmarried hired man named John Southerland.

Researchers Betty Hartley and Mark Haren place a fourth child in the family of Fred Burkhart and Theresa Yontz: Mary Burkhart. Census records do not bear this out. Mary Burkhart (allegedly later married to Wallace Feterkoff) does not appear with the family of Fred and Theresa Burkhart in either the 1900 or 1910 census. Both censuses state that Theresa (Yontz) Burkhart had given birth to three children, two of whom were still living. Those children are all accounted for.

Teresa E. Yontz

Called Clara in the 1860 census and Clarissa in the 1870 census.

Catherine Burkhart

Monroe County death records show the death of a Center Twp. girl named Catherine Burkhard, born 22 Nov 1883, died on 2 May 1898. It has not been proven that this is the same person as the daughter of Fred adnd Theresa, since the birth date is two weeks off; however, in the 1900 census, only two of Fred and Theresa's three children were still living.

Phillip Burkhart

In 1860, "Philip Birkhert" (age 50) lived in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living in the household were Madelena (46), Wendell (16), George M. (15), Madelena (13), Elizabeth (11), John (7), and Fred (5). Everyone was born in Bavaria except the two youngest children, who were natives of Ohio. George, Madelena and Elizabeth attended school. Philip's real estate was worth $2500; his personal property was valued at $650.

Date of death is in question... in the 1870 census, Magdelena may be a widow. She lives with her son and is the owner of the farm.

Maria Magdalena Burkhard

In 1870, Magdelena Burkhart (56) owned a farm worth $4200 in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living on the farm were her children Fred (16), Elizabeth (20), and George (25), as well as George's wife Mary (19) and daughter Gulianne (2 months). (Relationships are assumed; they are not listed in the census.)
