Francis A. Smith

In 1900, 26 year old Frank Smith lived on his parents farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio.

Living in the household in 1910 were 35 year old Frank Smith, his 33 year old wife, and their infant son, Norbert.

At the time of the 1920 census, F. A. Smith (46) and his wife, Julia B. (47) owned a farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with them were their children Norbert W. (10), Mary B. (8), Adelia M. (6), Elinor B. (2 yrs, 11 mos), and Julius Gustavus (1 yr 10 mos). The three oldest children attended school. Frank was a retail merchant who owned a general store.

The following appeared in The Zanesville Times Recorder on 29 Aug 1937
INJURED IN FALL
CALDWELL - Frank A. Smith of Fulda narrowly escaped
serious injury while visiting at the home of his brother [Louis] in Stark
county last week when he tripped and fell down a flight of stairs. He
received bruises about the head and shoulders, and although painful,
his injuries are not considered serious.

According to neighbor Clara Hohman Smithberger, Frank Smith owned the tobacco packing house and one of two grocery stores in town.

Birthday announcement from the Zanesville Times Recorder, 16 Jul 1925:
TRIPLE BIRTHDAY PARTY ENJOYED
On Sunday night, July 12, a large crowd gathered at the home of
F. A. Smith to celebrate triple birthdays in honor of Fred Fox, who has
reached the ripe old age of 88, Mrs. Alex Gerst and F. A. Smith both
being 52 years of age. A jolly time was had by all. Mrs. Smith served
a very delightful repast.
The following guests attended: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fox, Ignatz Fox
and five children, Claude, Irene, Frederick, Marcella and Rita; Mrs.
S. C. Hohmann and son, Herman of Harrietsville, O.; Mr. and Mrs.
Alex Singer and daughter Winifred; Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Singer, of
Cleveland, O.; Mr. and Mrs. Alex Gerst and son, Elmer; Mr. and Mrs.
John Weber; Ott Miller; Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Crum and two children,
Pauline and Bernard; Messrs. W. A. Ehlermann and T. M. Ehler-
mann of Sioux City, Iowa, and Caldwell, respectively, William
Arnold of Caldwell; Clarke Blackstone and five children, Agnes,
Bernard, George Albert, Wilbert and John; Terence Mickel; Ida
Schell and Olga Noll of Canton and Zanesville respectively.


Obituary:
CALDWELL, O. -- Frank A. Smith, 73, prominent retired
Caldwell businessman, was found dead at his home on West North
street at 4:30 o’clock Friday afternoon. Death was due to a heart
attack. Mr. Smith has been in failing health for two years but his
death was unexpected.
The son of the late Ambrose and Regina Funk Smith, he
was born near Fulda. Following his marriage to Miss Julia Ehlerman,
he was engaged in the mercantile business at Fulda for 21 years. He
moved to Caldwell 18 years ago and owned and operated the Caldwell
Implement and Supply company until retiring five years ago. He was
a member of the St. Philomena Catholic church and the Knights of
Columbus lodge. His wife died nine years ago.
Surviving are two sons, Norbert and Julius of the home, both
recently returned from overseas service; three daughters, Mrs. Frank
Estadt of Caldwell; Mrs. Robert Fliehman of Caldwell; and Miss Bea-
trice Smith of Granville; two grandchildren, Julia and Margaret Estadt,
and a sister, Mrs. Henry Michel of Louisville, O. Two brothers and
two sisters are deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 9 o’clock Monday morning
at St. Philomena church with Rev. Fr. Stephen Kepalla officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery at Caldwell in charge of the
Estadt Funeral Home.

ALL DAY QUILTING
Caldwell, O., March 24 - Mrs. Willima (sic) Arnold entertained a
number of ladies with an all-day quilting at her home on North street
Thursday. The quilt was for the benefit of the St. Philomena church
and at the noon hour a two course dinner was served to Mesdames
Helen Ehlerman, John Hupp, Frank Nau, Urban Nau, Edward Fogle,
Fred Young, Frank Smith, Ben Noll, Clem Estadt, Joe Hill and the
hostess.

She was the daughter of G. C. and Eva Hohman Ehlermann and spent
her early life in the Fulda community where she was born. She was a

Beatrice Smith, of Newark, Mrs. Frank Estadt, of Caldwell, Miss Elinore
Smith, local business woman and Julius Smith, student in Columbus,
five brothers and two sisters, T. M. Ehlerman, Caldwell, Julius Ehler-
mann, Barnesville, Adolph Ehlermann, Newark, William E Ehlermann,
Sioux City, Iowa, Ernest Ehlermann, Enid, Oklahoma, Mrs. William
Arnold, Caldwell and Miss Ceila Ehlermann of the home. Funeral services will be held at St. Philomena church Monday mor-
ning at 9 o'clock. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery at Olive.

A second obituary for Julia Ehlerman Smith appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on December 26, 1936. MRS. SMITH DIES CHRISTMAS DAY AT CALDWELL HOME Prominent Resident of Village Succumbs After Short Illness CALDWELL, O Dec 25 -- Mrs. Julia Ehlerman Smith, 59, wife of
F. A. Smith, owner of the Caldwell Implement and Supply company,
died at the family home on West North street this morning at 9:10
o'clock, following a short illness of pneumonia. She was one of Caldwell's best loved and most highly respected
residents and was a member of St. Philomena Catholic church. Her
death on Christmas Day cast a gloom over the entire community. She was born near Gulda, the daughter of the late G. C. Ehlerman
and Eva Hohman Ehlerman and lived many years after her marriage
to Mr. Smith in that community. Ten years ago the family moved to
Caldwell. Surviving are her husband, two sons, Norbert of the home and
Julius of Columbus, three daughters, Miss Beatrice Smith of Newark,
Mrs. Adelia estate, wife of Frank Estadt of Caldwell; and Miss Eleanore
of the home, Two brothers, Fred and Chris Ehlerman, are deceased.
The surviving brothers and sisters are: T. M. Ehlerman, Caldwell; Julius
Ehlerman, Barnesville; Adolph Ehlerman, Newark; William Ehlerman,
Enid, Okla.; Mrs. William Arnold, Caldwell and Miss Celia Ehlerman of
Caldwell. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock from the
St. Philomena church with Rev. Fr. Mark Campbell conducting solemn
High Mass. Interment will be in Olive cemetery in charge of the Estadt
Funeral home.


Mary Beatrice Smith

According to the 1966 obituary of her brother, Frank, Miss Beatrice Smith lived in Sacramento California.


Julius Gustav Smith

Julius is not mentioned as a surviving sibling in the 1966 obituary of his brother, Frank.


Ernest A. Ehlerman

In 1920, Ernest Ehlerman (35) and his wife Jenny (34) rented a home in Caldwell, Olive Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with them were their children Ernest A. (10), Maurine (8), and David (5). The two older children attended school. Ernest Sr.'s occupation was merchant of implements.

In 1930, Ernest Ehlerman (48) and his wife Jennie (45) rented a home for $35 a month in Enid, Garfield, Oklahoma. Living with them were their children Ernest (21) and Mary J. (19). Ernest Sr. was an advertising salesman.

Ernest Ehlerman's obituary appeared in The Advocate (Newark, OH) newspaper on January 24, 1939. ERNEST J. EHLERMANN Word has been received here this morning by A. F. Ehlermann,
434 Eastern avenue, of the sudden death of his brother, Ernest J.
Ehlermann, Sunday in Enid, Okla. Ehlermann suffered a heart
attack in his home. A frequent visitor to Newark, he was born in Fulda, O., and had
gone to Oklahoma nearly 12 years ago when he became affiliated
with a printing concern there. Surviving are his wife; three children, E. B. Ehlerman, David and
Maureen, all of Enid; two sisters, Cecelia Ehlermann and Mrs. Mary
Arnold, both of Caldwell; four brothers, T. M. Ehlermann of Caldwell,
Julius C. Ehlermann of Barnesville, William A. Ehlermann of Sioux
City, Ia., and A. F. Ehlermann of this city. Funeral services will be conducted in Enid tomorrow. A. F. Ehler-
mann said today he would be unable to attend.


Jane H. Bingham

According to the 1920 and 1930 census, Jenny's father was from Wales, and her mother was a native of Ohio. Maiden name from death certificate of son, David.


Ernest Bingham Ehlerman

In 1930, Ernest Ehlerman (21) lived with his parents in Enid, Oklahoma. He worked as a house painter.


Maurine Ehlerman

Name in the 1920 census looks like Maurine, and birthplace is Ohio. In 1930, it's Mary J., and birthplace is Oklahoma.


William A. Ehlerman

On Jul 12, 1925, Mr. W. A. Ehlermann of Sioux City, Iowa attended a triple birthday party at the home of Frank Smoth to honor Mrs. Alex (Tillie) Gerst, Frank Smith, and Fred Fox. See notes of Fred Fuchs (Fox) for text of the article from the Zanesville Times Recorder.

In 1930, William Ehlerman (42) owned a home worth $15,000 at 3020 Pierce in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Living with him were his wife Anna (43) daughters Gladys M. (17) and Dorothy (15), and a 36 year old servant named Anna (?). Both daughters attended school. William was employed as a wholesale jewelry merchant.

William lived in Sioux City, Iowa at the time of his brother's death (Terrence Ehlerman) in 1953.

Adolph F. Ehlerman

Adolf F. Ehlerman, cigar manufacturer, of this place [Caldwell], and Miss Lena Kulp

by Rev. Father Hermann.

In 1920, 26 year old Julius Ehlerman lived with his parents in Caldwell, Olive Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He was not employed, according to the census.

At the time of the 1930 census, Julius Ehlermann (37) owned a home worth $5000 at 105 Cherry St., Barnesville, Warren Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife Maude (28) and daughter June (6). June attended school. Julius was employed as a gasoline dealer. The Ehlerman family owned a radio set.

Julius lived in Dayton, Ohio at the time of his sister's death (Mary Ehlerman Arnold) in 1948. By the time of his brother, Terrence's death in 1953, Julius was living in Miami, Florida.


Terrence Maurice Ehlerman

In 1920, 24 year old Terrance Ehlerman lived with his parents in Caldwell, Olive Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He was not employed, according to the census.

Obituary:

CALDWELL MAN DIES SUDDENLY
CALDWELL, Feb 3 - Terrence M. Ehlermann, 56, veteran Caldwell
businessman, died at 3:30 o’clock this morning while enroute to Good Samaritan
hospital in Zanesville in an Estadt ambulance. He suffered a heart attack a short
time before his death.
He was born at Fulda on Feb. 2, 1895, a son of Gustav and Eva Hohman
Ehlermann. He moved to Caldwell in 1911.
Mr. Ehlermann entered the service station business in 1913 and became
distributor for the Sinclair Refining company. He sold his filling station and leased
his automobile accessories store in 1951.
He was a member of St. Philomena’s Catholic church, the Knights of
Columbus, the Holy Name Society, the Caldwell Boosters club and the Noble
county Fish and Game club.
Surviving are his widow, Helen, a sister, Miss Cecilia Ehlermann of the
home; and three brothers, Adolph of Newark, Julius of Miami, Fla., and William
of Sioux City, Ia.
The body was removed to the Estadt funeral home. The Rosary will be
recited at the funeral home Friday evening. Services will be conducted at 9 o’clock
Saturday morning at the St. Philomena church. Rev. Fr. S. J. Pekalla will officiate.
Burial will be in Olive cemetery.

Helen Biedenbach

Helen Biedenbach Ehlerman lived most of her live in Caldwell, Ohio, but moved to in an assisted living apartment in Canton, OH several years before her death. She was a very active member of St. Stephens Church in Caldwell, and her funeral and burial services were held there.

In 1920, Floyed Hohman (25) lived on a rented farm in Grant Twp., Riley Co., Kansas with his wife Elsie (26), and children Russel (7 1/2), Stanley (6), Gladys (3 yrs 10 mos.) and L. Gale (1). Russel and Stanley attended school.

From the Riley County Kansas 1925 Decennial Agricultural State census: Head of household was 30 year old Floyd Hohman, born in Kansas. Occupation R. Road. Lived in Manhattan City, Riley County, Kansas. Also living in the house were wife Elsie (31), sons Russel (12), Stanley (11), Gail (6), and Robert (infant); and daughters Gladys (9), Muriel (5) and Juanita (2). All members of the family were born in Kansas.

In 1930, Floyd (35) and Elsie (36) Hohman rented a farm in Swede Creek Twp., Riley County, Kansas. They lived there with their children Russell (17), Stanley (16), Gladys C. (14), Gail (11), Muriel (10), Juanita (7), and Robert (5). Gladys, Gail, Muriel and Juanita attended school. Also living in the house were two boarders, Harry and Gust Munk. Floyd was employed as a section foreman for the railroad. Like many of their neighbors, the Hohman family owned a radio set.

In 1900, 12 year old Raymond J. Springer (dob - July 1887) lived with his parents, Jacob and Sarah, and his siblings, Mable, Alvin, Charles, Emma and Sarah on a farm in Potttawatomie Twp., Blue Co., Kansas. Raymond attended school. Raymond was born in Kansas and his parents were born in Pennsylvania.

In 1910, 22 year old unmarried Raymond J. Springer lived on a farm he rented in Grant Twp., riley co., Kansas. Raymond was born in Kansas and his parents in Pennsylvania.

On June 5, 1917, 29 year old Raymond Jacob Springer (dob July 4, 1887) of Stockdale, Kansas registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card, his occupation was farming and stock raising near Stockdale. He was married and had one child. He claimed a military execption because of "chronic stomach problem under Dr. care 3 yrs." and becasue he was the sole support of his wife and child. His physical description is given as tall, slender, brown eyes and brown hair.

In 1920, 32 year old farmer Raymond J. Springer lived with his wife Amelia (27) and their son Clifford (3 yrs 6 mos) on a farm they owned on the Manhattan & Stockdale Road, Grant Twp., Riley Co., Kansas. All members of the household were born in Kansas, Raymond's parents were born in Pennsylvania and Amelia's in Ohio. Listed on the same census sheet were Amelia's parents, Henry and Elizabeth Hohman.

In 1930, 42 year old farmer Ray Springer lived with his wife Amelia (38) on a farm they owned in Grant Twp., Riley Co., Kansas. Living with them were their sons, Clifford (13) and Charles (8). Based on census data, Ray and Amelia had been married for 20 years. Clifford and Charles attended school. All membersof the household were born in Kansas, Raymond's parents were born in Pennsylvania and Amelia's in Ohio. Listed on the same census sheet was Raymond's 1st cousin Royal Springer and his family.


Amelia Hohman

Researcher Linda Kay Anderson shows both a Mollie and an Amelia in this family, with two different husbands (Edmun White and Raymond Springer, respectively). Since Mollie is a nickname for Amelia, further research needs to be done to determine if these are two daughters or the same person.
