According to the census, the couple had another child who died prior to 1900. Adjoining farms in the census belonged to widow Mary Haren and widow Rosa (Smithberger) Burkhart.

In 1920 and 1930, farmer Simon Burkhart lived in Malaga Twp., Monroe Co., OH with his wife Theresa and their two children Alfred and Mary.

Obituary (source unknown, provided by Betty Hartley):
The death of Mr. Simon Burkhart, 71, a well known resident of West South Street,
occurred in his home Friday night, after being confined to his bed a few days. He had
been in failing health for quite a while, but his death came unexpectedly.
The deceased was a native of Monroe County and for many years was a farmer in
the Miltonsburg community. About one year ago he retired and located in Barnesville.
Besides his wife, Theressa Burkhart, he is survived by three children: Raymond Burkhart,
Lewisville; Alfred and Mary Elizabeth Burkhart in the home; one sister, Woodsfield.
The body, in charge of the Steele Funeral directors was prepared for burial and funeral
service was conducted in the Church of the Assumption Monday morning at nine o'clock,
Father Carney officiating. Interment was made at Miltonsburg.

Simon Burkhart's death certificate states that contributing factors to his death were a nephrectomy (kidney removal) perfomed "several yearws ago" and influenza in the winter of 1937.

Theresa Mary Burkhart

Sources conflict on year of birth
17 Dec 1867 -- death certificate
17 Dec 1869 -- L. K. Anderson
1868 -- calculated from 1870 and 1900 census

Clarence George Burkhart

Records conflict on date of death -- Anderson and Hartley (who do not cite a source) give 26 May 1908 as the date of death. But Clarence is not included with the family in the 1900 census. The census states that Tresa Burkhardt had given birth to two children, only one of whom was alive in 1900. That child was Raymond.
