Obituary (source unknown, provided by Betty Hartley):
MONROE CO. MAN ENDS LIFE BY HANGING SELF
Ill Health and Despondency Given as Motives Which Prompted Deed
Mr. Frank Burkhart, 54, farmer and lumber dealer on the Barnesville Woodsfield
road, was found dead Sunday morning, hanging from a sill in the basement of his barn;
verdict was given as suicide. General despondency over his own ill health and grief for
the loss of his wife who died about one year ago, were advanced as the motives for the
deed.
Since Mrs. Burkhart’s death, he operated his own farm and lived with his daughter,
Mrs. Elijah Wells, on an adjoining farm. He was missed Saturday morning about ten
o’clock but it was supposed he had gone to Woodsfield with a neighbor,. But when he
did not come at night they became uneasy and not until next morning did they find him
hanging in the basement of his barn.
Besides the daughter, he leaves three sisters: F. V. Burkhart, Portsmouth, Mrs.
Lucetta Haren, Mrs. Theresa Burkhart, Miltonsburg,; Mrs. Ella Zwick, Louisville, Stark
County. Funeral was held Tuesday and burial was made in Oaklawn Cemetery,
Woodsfield.
