POLICE SAY MAN SHOT WIFE, THEN KILLED HIMSELF
Sunday, November 21, 2004
By Lori Monsewica and Ed Balint Repository staff writers
MASSILLON - Police believe a Massillon woman was asleep
when her husband shot her to death before turning the gun on himself.
Police were investigating as a homicide-suicide the fatal shootings of
Joseph Young, 34, and his wife, Krista Young, 28. The Youngs were
found dead in their home at 2003 Main Ave. W at about 12:30 a.m.
Saturday.
Police detective Sgt. James Mizeres said Saturday afternoon that he
was still trying to determine what caused Joseph Young to shoot his
wife in their bed. Joseph Young called his parents and told them he had
just shot his wife and that he was going to kill himself, the Stark County
coroner's office reported. The parents called police at about 12:15 a.m.
When police arrived, they found Young in the living room, dead from
an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Mizeres said. They
found his wife in the back bedroom. She had died of multiple gunshot wounds
to the head from a pistol, said Harry Campbell, chief investigator for the
coroner's office. Mizeres said police found no suicide note and did not yet
know why Young pulled the trigger on his wife and then himself. "There are
photos of them together hunting and smiling," he said. "It's sad." Police said
the couple had no children.
"There was nothing at the scene to suggest a motive," Campbell said.
Neighbors were shocked by the deaths. The small, two-story home, with
tan-shuttered windows, is nestled in a working-class neighborhood in west
Massillon, near a fire station and a church.
The couple lived there for about five to seven years, said Jerome Hatha-
way, who lives directly across the street. The couple often rode Joseph
Young's Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Both rode all-terrain vehicles. Matching
his-and-her helmets were inside the home. Photos of the couple also adorned
the walls. Nothing unusual was outside the home, either. The yard was tidy.
Flowers and shrubbery surrounded the house. A windsock of stars and stripes
hung near the garage. A large blue trash container sat next to the garage. Mail
was delivered to the home late Saturday afternoon. A tiny wooden marker in
a flower pot declared: "Land of the free." A dog leash was near the front door,
where a Thanksgiving wreath read: "Harvest Welcome." An toy frog greeted
visitors, croaking every time someone walked past. A lawn chair was in a flower
bed, empty except for three dead yellow flowers. A small sign stuck in the soil
was emblazoned with a cheerful message: "Stop and smell the flowers."
Hathaway said he knew Joseph Young better than anybody in the immediate
neighborhood. Joseph Young worked at a gravel business in Massillon, the
neighbor said. He drove a truck there, the coroner's office said. Hathaway met
Krista about five years ago after the couple got engaged. Hathaway remembered
sharing a couple of beers with Joseph Young in the front yard. Hathaway gave
him free tickets to a Cleveland Browns game. Last spring, Joseph Young gave
him free mulch when Hathaway planted flowers. "I'm sure going to miss the
guy," he said, stringing up Christmas lights outside his home. "He was a great
neighbor."
Hathaway called the situation "tragic" and said he never noticed any problems.
"I didn't see anything on the surface," he said. "Nothing unusual." "I talked to his
brother (Saturday afternoon) and I don't think anybody had a clue there was a
problem," he said. Hathaway's wife, Mary Hathaway, said there's never been a
disturbance in the neighborhood, except for an occasional auto accident. She
would say hello to Joseph or Krista when they washed their cars or did yard
work. They waved back. "It's a quiet neighborhood," Mary Hathaway said. "I
never dreamt (something like this would happen). It's a shocker."
Funeral arrangements are pending at Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon.
