Harry Otto Smithberger

Harry Smithberger’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 27 Feb 1967:
STAFFORD - Harry O. Smithberger, 68, of Lower Salem
Route 1 died at 8 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 25) at Marietta Mem-
orial Hospital after a nine-year illness.
He was born on May 4, 1888 in Noble County, a son of
Anthony and Anna Epler Smithberger. He was a member
of Zion United Church of Christ in Harriettsville, Elk Township
Grange, and a retired farmer.
Surviving are his widow, Minnie Haffner Smithberger; a
daughter, Mrs. Norma Jean Burkhart of Worthington; two
sons, Robert B. of Worthington and Larry W. Smithberger
of the home; six grandchildren and four sister, Miss Charlotte
Smithberger of the home, Mrs. Lenora Nieb of Waterford,
Mrs. Luesa Parks of Alliance and Mrs. Ben Ullman of Lower
Salem.
The body was taken to Mallett Funeral Home here where
friends may call after 6 p.m. today. Services will be at 1 p.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Settiage
officiating. Burial will be in Salem Township Cemetery.


Philip Ullman

From the 1900 census: 52 year old farmer Philip Ullman lived on a mortgaged farm in Elk Twp., Noble Co., OH with his 42 year old wife, their two children -- Rosina (5) and William (3) -- Philip's brother, Fred (40) and his mother, Elizabeth (76). Philip was born in Ohio to German born parents. Philip could read and write.

Phillip Ullman’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 11 May 1938:
PHILLIP ULLMAN FUNERAL SERVICE IS HELD TUESDAY
CALDWELL, O., May 10 - Last rites for Phillip Ullman, 90, life-long
resident and well known retired farmer of Elk township, Noble county,
were held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at Zion Evangelical Lutheran
church, near Harriettsville, following short funeral services at the home
and burial was made in the new cemetery near the church.
The deceased was a son of the late Phillip Ullman, Sr., who with five
brothers came from Germany and were among the first settlers of Noble
county. They were Peter, Fred, Louis, Jacob and Henry. His mother,
Elizabeth Ullman, known throughout the whole community as “Aunt
Lizzie” died 25 years ago at the age of 98.
He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church and surviving are
his widow, Mrs. Maggie Fleeman Ullman, one son and one daughter,
Benjamin Ullman of the family home and Mrs. A. R. Morrison of Thornville.
The brother and sisters are William Ullman of Whipple, Mrs. Phoebe Beard-
more, Warner, and Mrs. Mary Glover, Ben’s Run, W.Va. A number of
relatives live in Caldwell and Noble county. Albert Handschumaker, of
South Cumberland street is a nephew of the deceased.


Margaret Flieman

In 1900, Margaret Flieman Ullman had given birth to two children, both of whom were still living. Margaret was born in Ohio to German-born parents. Margaret spoke English, but could not read or write.


Charles Raymond Burkhart

BURKHART Charles Raymond "Ray" Burkhart, age 80, of Worthington, OH and Sarasota, FL, passed peacefully to his eternal home to live with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 6, 2008. Ray's love of life, people and humor was with him till the end.
Ray was born in Harrietsville, (Noble County), OH on November 16, 1927, son of the William and Ruth Burkhart who preceded him in death, along with his wife Jean (Smithberger) Burkhart and sister Goldie Wurtzbacher.
He was a graduate of Elk Rural High School, Class of 1945 followed by service to his country by serving in the U.S. Navy. He attended OSU and Franklin University majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He married his high school sweetheart, Jean in 1949 and they enjoyed 55 years together. Ray and Jean moved to Columbus in 1950 settling in Grandview and then Worthington in 1952. He worked for Johnson Controls and then in 1960 Sales Manager of Goodale Auto-Truck Parts Co., Inc. His hard work and ambition enabled him to purchase Goodale in 1974 and involve his family in the business. He took great honor in the privilege of employing many wonderful people over the years and deeply appreciated all their efforts and dedication.
Ray's involvement in the Masonic Fraternity included being a 50 year member and Past Master of Masterton Lodge #429 F&AM, Lebanon, OH and a plural member and Past Master of New England Lodge #4 F&AM, Worthington, OH. He was also a 50 year member of the 32 Degree Masons, Valley of Columbus; a 50 year member and Past High Priest of Horace W. Wright Chapter #226 R.A.M., a member of Zabud Council #99 R.&S.M. and Mount Vernon Commandery #1 Knights Templar. He was also a 50 year member of Aladdin Shriners and was a charter member of the Shrine's Past Master's Unit; Past President of the Worthington Shrine Club, and a member Achbar Grotto. Ray was also a two time Past Patron of Worthington Chapter #287 Order of the Eastern Star and also served as Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Ohio Eastern Star in 1996. He was a Past President of the National Automotive Parts Rebuilders Assoc. and Past President of the Automotive Booster B-32., Past President of Colonial Hills Civic Assoc. and served on the board of North Community Lutheran Church where he had been a member for over 50 years and most recently a member at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church in Sarasota, FL. He took great pride in his family, in being an American, and his service to the world in which he lived. His positive attitude and strong sense of commitment will always be remembered.
He truly was part of the "Greatest Generation" and will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his dear friend, Lynn Porter of Venice, FL and family: daughters, Debbie (Tom) Comer, Darla (Jeff) Bohenko of Worthington; and sons, David (Theresa) Burkhart of Powell and Doug (Terre) Burkhart of Dublin; grandchildren, Jason and Nick (Ashley) Comer, Taylor, Marshal, Ian, Goldie, Mackenzie, Colleen and Andrew Burkhart; brother, Bill (Debbie) Burkhart of Lowell, OH; sister, Shirley (Vernon) Thomas of Lower Salem, OH; brother-in-law, Larry (Mary Lou) Smithberger of Marietta, OH; sister-in-law, Katherine Smithberger of Worthington; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will welcome friends at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High St., Worthington, OH 43085 from 2-9 p.m. Thursday, July 10th and one hour prior to the funeral service to be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at All Saints Lutheran Church, 6770 N. High St., Worthington, OH with Rev. Richard Wilson, PGM, PGP of Jerusalem, OH and Rev. Bonnie Gerber of All Saints Church officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Worthington. A Masonic Service will begin at 8:30 p.m. Thursday followed by an Eastern Star Service.

Norma Jean Smithberger

WORTHINGTON, Ohio - Jean Burkhart, 76, a longtime Worthington resident since 1951, passed to her eternal home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday (July 23, 2004) at Grant Medical Center. She was a retired administrative assistant for Goodale Auto & Truck Parts Co.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Minnie Smithberger; and her brother, Robert Smithberger.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, C. Ray Burkhart; children, Debbie (Tom) Comer of Worthington, Dave (Theresa) Burkhart of Powell, Doug (Terre) Burkhart of Dublin and Darla (Jeff) Bohenke of Worthington; grandchildren, Jason, Nick, Mackenzie, Colleen, Andrew, Taylor, Marshall, Ian and Goldie; brother, Larry (Mary Lou) Smithberger of Marietta; sister-in-law, Katherine Smithberger of Worthington; brother-in-law and his wife, William and Debbie Burkhart of Lowell; sister-in-law and her husband, Shirley and Vernon Thomas of Lower Salem; and many nieces and nephews.
Jean's memberships included North Community Lutheran Church, where she had been a member since 1951; and Worthington Chapter 287, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as worthy matron in 1973. She was also a member of Thebes Temple 87, Daughters of the Nile; Thea Court 5, Ladies Oriental Shrine of N.A.; the Past Masters Ladies Unit of Aladdin Temple Shrine; Worthington Women’s Club; and Brookside Country Club.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at North Community Lutheran Church, 114 Morse Road, Columbus, with the Rev. John Kindsvarter officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. The family will welcome friends at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High St., Worthington, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. An Eastern Star service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Jean was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her life was full of joy of friends, sincere concern for others and a warm sense of humor. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
