SERVICES SET FOR EX-MAYOR
Services will be held for Raphael M. Deegan, who served
two terms as mayor of Cameron, and was a former principal
of Sherrard High School, who died Wednesday in Wheeling
Hospital. He was 75. A resident of 103 Main St., Cameron,
he was born May 19, 1918, in Benwood, a son of the late
Raphael P. and Mary Muth Deegan.
He was educated at St. John's Elementary School, Ben-
wood, and Central Catholic High School, Wheeling, and
received his undergraduate degrees in sociology and math-
matics at West Liberty State College and his master's degree
in mathmatics and education at West Virginia University. He
worked in graduate studies at Drake University, the University
of North Carolina and the University of Massachusetts. He
was an Army and Navy veteran of World War II. Deegan was
a former teacher at Hiwassee Dam High School, Hiwassee
Dam, N.C., Murphy High School, Murphy, N.C.; Smithfield
High School, Smithfield, W.Va., and Sherrard High School.
He, then became principal at Sherrard High School and
was later principal at Union Junior High School in Benwood.
He returned to teaching at Cameron High School until his
retirement in 1980.
He was the former chairman of the state Democratic
Party, a former member of the Marshall County Planning
Commission, and a former social director at the West Virginia
Penitentiary, a Past Northern District Commander of the Amer-
ican Legion, a member and past commander of Maerican
Legion Post No. 46 Blake Brothers, and a life member and
past secretary of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 758.
He also was a life member of Elks Lodge No. 33, Sistersville,
the Royal Order of Jesters, Court No. 13, member of the
Wheeling Scottish Rite Bodies, Cherokee Lodge, Murphy,
N.C., and a member of Osiris Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Legion
of Honor.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Paulie Deegan; a son Major
Raphael P. of Fort Polk, La.; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Lisa)
Deegan-Langer of Belle Fourche, S. D., two brothers, Michael
Francis Deegan of Huntsville, Ala., and the Rev. Ronan J.
Deegan, T.O.R., pastor of St. Francis Xavier Cathol Church,
Moundsville; a sister, Rosemary Deegan Donlioc of St. Augus-
tine Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren.
Friends received 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Altmeyer Funeral
Home, Lutes, Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Ave Moundsville.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at
St. Xavier Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ronan J. Deegan,
T.O.R., as celebrant. Interment in Riverview Cemetery,
Moundsville.
