David Theobald Burkhart

In 1850, 21 year old David Burkhart lived and worked on his parents' farm in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio.

At the time of the 1870 census, Theobalt Burkhart (43) owned a farm worth $3000 in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. His personal possessions were valued at $810. Living with him were his wife Catherine (32) and children John (12), Maryann (9), Conrad (7), Joseph (5), Barbara (4), and Josephine (1). All of the childeen attended school except Barbara and Josephine. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Jacob Weisent and Theobald's brother John George Burkhard.

In 1900, E. Teobalt Burkhart (70 - Sep 1820) and his wife Catherine (61 - May 1839) owned a farm in Seneca Twp. where they lived with some of their adult unmarried children: John (39 - Feb 1861), Conrad G. (37 - Sep 1862), Joseph (35 - Aug 1864), Josephine (28 - May 1872), and Aloysius (24 Jun 1875). According to the census, Catherine had given birth to nine children: five lived with them, one was deceased, and three no longer lived at home. The census stated that Teobalt and Catherine had been married for 40 years. The census stated that Catherine and all the children were natives of Ohio. Teobalt was from Byron (Bavaria), as were his parents and Catherine's parents.

Surname in death record is spelled Burkhart.

Theobald was a member of the Catholic church. He
leaves a wife and eight children.The funeral services were
conducted by Rev. Father (Nageror), internment at Chapel
Hill cemetery.


Catharine Wahl

In 1920, widow Catherine Burkhart (81) owned a farm in Summit Twp., Monroe County, Ohio where she lived with her three oldest surviving children, Mary (59), Conrad (57) and Joseph (55). All of the children were unmarried.

John Theobald Burkhart

John T. Burkhart never married. Surname in Monroe County death record is spelled Burkhart. Although he died in Summit Twp., death records indicate that he was a resident of Seneca Twp. at the time of his death.

John Burkhart of Wills creek dropped dead
Wednesday morning while sawing wood in
company with his brother.
He was a son of Mr. and Mrs.David Burkhart
and a nephew of Mrs. Phillip J. Schumacher,
Mrs. Anthony Schumacher and Mrs. Fred Haren
of Woodsfield. Deceased was about 85 years
of age and unmarried.
The funeral services will be held at the Cath-
olic church at Burkhart Friday morning at nine
o'clock. Rev. Father Smith willofficate.


Mary Ann Burkhart

In the 1920 census, the father of all three of the adult unmarried children of Catherine Burkhart was a native of Ohio. The census stated that Conrad and Joseph's mother was also a native of Ohio; however Mary Burkhart's mother was a native of Germany. This suggests that Mary -- the oldest of the children -- had a different mother than her brothers.

for Miss Mary Burkhart, 86, whose death occured
Friday, December 20, at her home near Burkhart.
Burial was in Chapel Hill cemetery. Surviving are
two brothers,Conrad, of the home; Aloys, of Lewis-
ville Route 1, and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Schu-
macher, of Lewisville Route 1, and Sister Helen
of Milwaukee,Wisconsin.


Conrad George Burkhart

In 1930, three unmarried Burkhart siblings lived together: Conrad (67) was listed in the census as the head of the household. He lived with his brother Joseph (65) and sister Mary (69). Conrad was the only member of the home who had an occupation -- farmer. Adjacent households in the census belonged to spinster Gertrude Keseling and the family of William Burkhart (Conrad's first cousin, twice removed).

Cause of death from death certificate: chronic myocarditis due to general arteriosclerosis & gangrene of the feet; chronic interstitial nephritis.


Joseph F. Burkhart

In 1930, the three oldest living Burkhart siblings -- Mary, Joseph and Conrad -- lived together on a farm in Summit Twp., Monroe County, Ohio.


Barbara Burkhart

Barbara Burkhart left home prior to 1900, entered the convent and took the name Sister Mary Helen. She lived at convent of the Franciscan Sisters at South Lake Dr. Milwaukee, Wisconsin.


Cecilia Burkhart

Cecilia Burkhart left home prior to 1900 and joined the same order as her sister Barbara, and took the name Sister Mary Theobalda. They lived at Franciscans Sisters on South Lake Dr. Milwaukee, WI. Both women are buried at the convent.


Isadore Burkhart

Isadore Burkhart did not appear with his parents and siblings in the 1900 census.


Leo Frederick Schwallie

Dairy farmer. Hobby: stained glass. Dates of birth and death (from Social Security Index) have not been proven.


Dorothy Agnes Schumacher

Dorothy Agnes Schwallie, 85, South Acres, Caldwell, died Thursday evening,
April 27, 1995 at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge. She was
born Jan. 15, 1910 in Woodsfield, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester (Minnie)
Schumacher. She was a homemaker and former church organist at St. Mary Catholic
Church, Temperanceville. She was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, Caldwell,
and the Catholic Women's Club.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Schumacher. Surviving are her husband,
Leo F. Schwallie, whom she married Dec. 9, 1940; two sons, Ted Schwallie of Grand Haven,
Michigan, and Ambrose Schwallie of Aiken, S.C.; two brothers, Fred Schumacher, Woodsfield,
and Karl Schumacher, Carrollton; one sister. Gladys Pfeffer of Woodsfield; four grandchildren.
Friends were received Sunday at McVay-Perkms Funeral Home, Caldwell. Mass of Christian
Burial was held Monday morning at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Caldwell with Rev. Fr. Dale
Tornes as celebrant Burial followed in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Temperanceville.

Jacob (Jacques) Weisend Sr.

Found on 1860 Ohio Census Malaga Twp. Monroe Co. F. H. C. Film # 805012. Pg. 100 at Age 82 yrs. with Wife: Anna Margaretha (Listed as Margaret) Age 75 yrs. Weisend history sent by Mrs. Jane (Burkhart) Peters shows birthplace as Brandel, Germany. Marriage Document lists birthplace as Stirtzelbronn.

Occupatiion in France: farmer.

In 1850, 72 year old German-born farmer Jacob Wysant Sr. lived in Centre Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Margaret (66) and son Peter (20). Their farm was valued at $800. Adjacent households in the census belonged to Conrad Huffman and Jacob Singer Sr. (later of Fulda).

Elizabetha Weisend

The birth of this child less than two months after the birth of a similarly named sister has not been explained. Further investigation is required.


Madelaine Weisend

Given birth name is in French. German spelling is Magdelene or Magdelena. Found on Film # 777188. Father's name also spelled in French as Jacques (Jacob) and Mother's name also French as Margrithe Greiter (Margaretha Krauter).


Barbara Weisend

Birth document found on film # 777189 (#16 year 1828). Given name shown as Barb'e. Document written in French. German spelling is Barbara.


Pierre Weisend

In 1850, 20 year old farmer Peter Wysant lived on his parents' farm in Centre Twp., Monroe County, Ohio.


Michael Swallie

Michael is believed to have changed the spelling of his name to Swallie. He married in Barnesville, Ohio. His wife was not Catholic, according to researcher Roger Schockling.

The following family, found in the 1880 census, has not been proven to be the same as Michael Swallie. However, there are several matching data points: First name of husband and wife match; Last name is close, ages of husband and wife are close, and two of the children (Theresa and Dory/Theodore) match those provide by researcher Gordon Schwallie. The location also matches other data. Year of marriage from 1910 census coincides with age of the oldest child.

In 1880, 40 year old farmer Michael Swollon and his wife Catherine (40) owned a farm in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with them were their children Theodore C. (8), George A. (6), Theresa O. (4), and John Gilbert (2). Theodore and George attended school. The census states that everone in the household was a native of Ohio except Catherine, who was from England (as were her parents). The birthplace of Michael's parents was unknown.

The family has not been found in the 1900 census.

In 1910, Michael Swallie (74) and his wife of 37 years, Catherine (75), owned a farm in Malaga Twp.The census taker did not record how many children Catherine had. According to the census, both Michael and Catherine were born in Ohio to German parents.


James Butler Sr.

James and Mary Butler raised their family on a farm near Temperanceville, Belmont County, Ohio. Their children all settled in the Temperanceville area with the exception of Jack, who moved to Miltonsburg, Monroe County, Ohio.

Maiden name spelled Swallie or Swallee on death certificates of sons Simon, John, George and James.

In 1900, widow Mary A. Butler (60 - Aug 1839) owned a farm in Boston Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. According to the census, she had given birth to 11 children, 9 of whom were still alive in 1900. Three ot her adult children lived with her: Christine (38 - Apr 1852), Joseph F. (25 - Apr 1875), and Nicholas (21 - Mar 1879). Also living with her was a nephew, Henry Butler (25 - May 1875). Henry and his parents wree natives of Ohio. Several of Mary's married children lived nearby.

At the time of the 1920 census, 80 year old widow Mary A. Butler lived with her son and daughter-in-law, James and Rosa Butler on their rented farm in Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio.


Lena Schwallie

Lena and her husband had no children.

Rosa Muth Miracle and her husband lived with her father and siblings at the time of the 1910 census.

Alma Catherine Muth

Dates of birth and death (from Social Security Death Index) have not been proven.

Alma remained at home after her brothers moved away. In October 1969, Alma was still living at what was left of the farm with her husband Leslie Morrow, who is a farmer. In 1970, the Clem family lived in the old home.
