John William Bergman

In 1918, John William Bergman of Etna, Pennsylvania registered for the US military draft. Unfortunately, the microfilm copy of the registration card is in poor condition. The answers are clear, but the questions are illegible.

In 1930, John W. Bergman (33) and his wife Clara (31) owned a home worth $200 at 143 Vista St. in Etna Borough, Allegheny County, PA. Living with them were their children Wilma (10) and Dorothy (9). Both girls attended school. Everyone in the home was a native of Pennsylvania, as were their parents, except for John's parents, who were German. John worked as a laborer for a wire manufacturer. He was a veteran of the World War.

In 1942, John William Bergman of 2605 Bowman Ave., McKeesport registered for the US military draft. He stated that he was born on 8-2-96 in Etna, Pa. He worked at Firth Sterling Steel Co. in McKeesport. John was 5'8", 140 lbs. with gray hair, gray eyes and a light complexion.

Joseph Urban Biedenbach

In 1920, Joseph Biedenbach lived with his married brother Isadore on a farm in Canton, Stark Co., OH. Joseph was employed as a woodworker in a planing mill.


Arlene J. Kehner

Obituary:
Arlene J. Biedenbach, age 90, of Canton, passed away
Tuesday morning at Hanover House Nursing Home follow-
ing an extended illness. Born in Suffield, OH on May 2,
1915, the daughter of the late Lewis and Rose (Knapp)
Kehner. Arlene was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Catholic
Church Parish.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her
loving husband, Joseph Biedenbach in 1979; a son, Donald
Biedenbach in 2005; three brothers; and six sisters. She is
survived by her three sons, Charles (Helene) Biedenbach of
Massillon, OH, Richard (Patty) Biedenbach of Louisville, OH,
and Thomas (Jeanne) Kehner of Massillon; a daughter-in-law,
Patricia Biedenbach of Canton; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-
grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at
10 a.m. in St. Peter's Catholic Church with Msgr. John Finnigan
as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday 2-4 p.m. in the Reed Funeral
Home-Canton Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in
her name to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 726 Cleveland Ave.

At the time of the 1920 census, William Burkhart was listed on his parents' farm in Summit Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. His wife Otillia is also living in the household.

In 1930, Wm. M. Burkhart (35) and his wife Frances (30) owned a farm in Summit Twp. where they lived with their daughter Evaline (9 mos.) and William's unmarried brother, Herman. William was the proprietor of a general store. He was a veteran of World War I. The Burkhart family did not own a radio set. According to the census, William and Frances were 33 and 28 years old at the time of their first marriage. This information, if correct, calls into question the first marriage of William Burkhart to Tillie Wahl. Adjacent households in the census belonged to Conrad Burkhart (William's first cousin, twice removed) and Henry Morris.

Frances Biedenbach Burkhart's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 18 Aug 1966:

Summerfield -- Mrs. Frances T. Burkhart, 66, of Beallsville Route died at 11 a.m..
Wednesday (Aug. 17, 1966) at Barnesville General Hospital following an illness of
several months. She was born Jan 29 1900 in Monroe County, a daughter of Charles
and Mary Muth Biedenbach. Her husband, William, died March 20, 1960.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Virgil (Evelyn) Smith of Canton, Mrs. Victor
(Rita) Geier of Cleveland, Mrs. Bernard (Mary Lou) Brown of Canton, and Miss Phyllis
Burkhart of Canton; two sons, Norbert of Beallsville and Bernard of Canton; four brothers,
Joseph and Isadore Biedenbach of Canton, Odilla and Edwin Biedenbach of Lewisville; and
21 grandchildren.
Requiem mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. (EST) Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at
Burkhart with Rev. Fr. Joseph Finan officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill cemetery.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. (EST) today at the Brubach Funeral Home at
Summerfield. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today.

Otillia Barbra Wahl

From Rita Paul Burkhart:
Otillia's death was caused by an accident involving a runaway horse and carriage. Otillia went into labor, but neither she nor the baby survived.

According to the online Ohio death certificate index, Elmer Nau was married at the time of his death.


Julius Henry Haren

In 1920, 31 year old Jules Haren lived in a rented house on South Paull Street in Woodsfield Village, Center Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio with his wife Clara (31) and children Mary Regina (7), Alice A. (5), Helda M. (3) and Roger G. (1). Mary Regina attended school. Jules Haren was employed as a laborer in a flour mill.

Also living in the home in 1920 were widow Emma I. Baker (34) and her son Merle W. (12). The relationship between Emma Baker and the Haren family (if any) is not known.

Julius had 26 grandchildren, 16 gr. grandchildren, and 1 gr. gr. grandchild. He retired from Diebolds in 1953.

Clara Biedenbach did not live with her parents and younger siblings at the time of the 1910 census.
