Ernest L. Thompson

Accorrding to the 1933 obituary of his sister, Lena Thompson Brahler, Ernest lived in Noble County. Ernest was not included as a surviving sibling in the 1964 death notice of his sister, Emma Thompson Ritterbeck.


Lucy L. Schott

The following appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on December 24, 1926: HOME FOR VACATION Miss Lucy Schott, nurse in the Mt. Carmel hospital at
Columbus, arrived in Caldwell, Wednesday evening to
spend the Christmas vacation with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Casper Schott, on Fairground street.

The following appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on June 23, 1930: APPROACHING MARRIAGE ANNOUNCED The approaching marriage of Miss Lucy Schott,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Schott of Caldwell,
and Dr. William H. B. Roche, of Columbus, was
announced at the home of Mrs. H. B. Griffin of Martin
Ave., Columbus. the wedding will be an event of July
14 and will be solemnized in St. Philomena church,
Caldwell. Miss Schott is a graduate of Caldwell high school
and a graduate in Mt. Carmel hospital, Columbus. Dr.
Roche is a prominent Columbus physician residing
1028 Cleveland Ave., that city.

Bertha P. Schott

The following wedding announcement appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on October 14, 1932 SCHOTT - SVOBODA RITES SOLEMNIZED Caldwell, O, Oct. 14 -- A pretty wedding was solemnized
recently in Immaculate Conception church, Cleveland, when
Miss Bertha Schott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Schott,
Caldwell, was united in marriage to Dr. Joseph Edward
Svoboda, Cleveland. Rev. J. P. Fagan performed the
ceremony. Dr. and Mrs. William H. B. Roche, Columbus, brother-in-
law and sister of the bride were the only attendants. Both the
bride and her sister were attired in brown with accessories
to match. Mrs. Svoboda is a graduate of Caldwell high school with
the class of 1923 and attended Ohio State university in Co-
lumbus where she had resided for a number of years. Dr. Svoboda was graduated from Ohio State university in
1928. He is a member of Phi Rho Sigma fraternity. They will
reside in Cleveland.

Niece Kathryn Schott Donze says that Bertha never remarried after the death of Dr. Joseph Svoboda. Researchers Dolores Snider and Joann Cummings state that Bertha married Vincent Reefe in 1966. Bertha's entry in the Ohio online death certificate index (www.ancestry.com) gives her last name as Svoboda.

Bertha worked as an accountant in a college.

Bernard Theodore Gerdes

Sources conflict on place of birth for Bernard Gerdes. The 1910, 1920, and 1930 census all state that he was born in Ohio. However a family tree submitted to ancestry.com in 2001 by jrgerdes@netscape.net gives Bernard's place of birth as Evansville, Indiana. (http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:a25398&id=I017)

In 1910, Bernard T. Gerdes (38) and his wife of nine years, Amelia (29) owned a farm in Butler Twp., Mercer County, Ohio. According to the census, Amelia had given birth to four children, three of whom were still living. Those three were Raymond C. (6), Anna G. (4), and Urban J. (1 yr 6 mos). Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. Bernard's parents were natives of Germany.

At the time of the 1920 census, Bernard (48) and Amelia Gerdes (39) still owned a farm in Butler Twp. where they lived with their children Raymond (16), Anna (13), Urban (11), Paul (7), and Liona (4 yrs 9 mos). All of the children attended school except Liona.

In 1930, Bernard Gerdes (58) and his wife Emilia (49) owned a farm on Gerdes Road in Butler Twp., Mercer County, Ohio. Living with them were their children Urban (21), Paul (18) and Leona (15). Paul and Leona attended school. The family owned a radio set.

John Scheetz

The "Fulda" column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press stated on 30 Nov 1882:
Married -- on the 28th at the Catholic church, John Schutz and
Barbara Hupp.

On 25 Jan 1883, the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
John Schultz [Scheetz] and August Schmitt [Smith] have returned
to Youngstown, after a stay of several weeks with their parents and
relatives.

In 1900, John (43) and Barbara (37) Scheetz owned a home at 892 Tod Avenue (house number and street name are unclear in the census) in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. They lived their with their eight surviving children: Mildred (16), Frank (14), Albert (13), Clara (8), Aloysius (7), Elizabeth (4), Florence (2), and Carl (6 mos.). Two other children died before 1900. Albert, Clara, and Aloysius attended school for 10 months during the previous year. John Scheetz was employed in the construction and building trade. The house next door contained several of John's cousins... August Gerst & family, August's sisters Matilda (Gerst) Weber & family, and Marian Gerst.

Martin Casper Schott

On June 4, 1917, Martin C. Schott filled out a US Draft Registration card. He was born in Bern (sic) [Noble Co.] Ohio on 16 Jan 1893 and was a resident of Cleveland. (His address is written, but scratched out.) He indicated that he was married and was a "prospective father." He was employed in an office for the H.W. Johns Manville Co. at 813 Superior Ave. West in Cleveland. Martin was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and fair hair, and without any distinguishing physical characteristics.

At the time of the 1920 census, Martin Shott (27) rented an apartment at 1552 Addison Road in Cleveland's 22nd Ward. Living with him were his wife Dorothy (25), and sons Warren (2) and Robert (3 months). Martin and his parents were natives of Ohio; Dorothy and her parents were born in Canada. The children were both born in Ohio. Martin was employed as a bookkeeper at a machinery company. (Note that Martin's sister Rose was also an office worker living in Cleveland in 1920, and she later married a Canadian.)

In 1930, Martin C. Schatt (37), his wife Dorothy M. (33), and sons Warren E. (12) and Robert R. (10) rented a home for $40 a month at 10112 Garfield Ave. in Cleveland. Both boys attended school. Marten worked as an insurance agent. The family owned a radio set. According to the census, Martin was 24 and Dorothy was 22 when they were married.

Dorthy came to America in 1905 and became a citizen in 1910. Her Social Security number was issued in Ohio prior to 1951.


Urban George Schott

Urban George Schott and his second cousin, Urban Peter Schott were born on the same day: 20 Aug 1897.

On Aug. 24, 1918, 21 year old Urban George Schott filled out a Draft Registration Card. His address (which is difficult to read) is 130 15th St. SE, Canton, O. His birthplace is given as Summerfield, and his father's birthplace is listed as Fulda, Ohio, U.S.A. Urban was an employee of the Timken Roller Bearing Co. in Canton, Ohio. His next of kin was his father, Jacob Schott, in Summerfield, Ohio. Urban had blue eyes and light hair.

In 1920, Urban Schott (22) and his wife Esther (24) owned a mortgaged home at 1908 Woodland Ave., Canton, Stark County, Ohio. Also living in the home was Esther's sister Mary Dieninger (21). Urban worked as a tire finisher for a rubber company. Mary was a saleswoman in a grocery. Esther did not work outside the home. Everyone in the home was a native of Ohio, as were their parents.

At the time of the 1930 census, Urban G. Schott (32) rented part of a two-family home for $35 a month at 3827 107th St. in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Living in the household were his wife Esther E. (34), and children Eleanore M. (10), Ruth E. (8), Donald E. (6), and Ida L. (4). All of the children attended school except Ida. Urban was an insurance salesman. The family owned a radio set.


Wilbert Leo Schott

In 1930, 24 year old Wilbur Schott worked as a farm laborer and lived as a boarder in the home of the Frank X. Meyer family on Canton - Bolivar Road in Canton, Strak Co., Ohio. Wilbur and his parents were born in Ohio.

The following appeared in The Times recorder (Zanesville, OH) on July 30, 1930: MARRIAGE BANSS READ The marriage banns of Wilbert Schott, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jacob Schott, of near Berne, well known Noble county young
man, and Miss Bessie Duff of Cambridge, were published in
St. Benedict's Catholic church, at Cambridge, last Sunday
morning. the wedding is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 22,
and will occur, at 9 o'clock in St. benedict's church at Cam-
bridge. Miss Edna Crum of Berne and Robert Crum of Sarahs-
ville, will act as bride's maid and best man. Following the
ceremony a wedding dinner will be served at the home of the
groom's parents at Berne to a number of invited guests.


The following appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on January 29, 1937 Wilbur Schott, 26, of near Caldwell, was adjudged insane Thurs-
day morning in the probate court and wass committed to the Athens
state hospital.


From the Zanesville Signal, 9 Oct 1939:
ACCIDENT VICTIM
CALDWELL - Wilbur Schott, 28, son of Jacob Schott of
Fulda, was Noble county’s first accident victim during the present
hunting season when his gun accidentally discharged Saturday
morning.
The shot struck the inside of his left foot and tore off the little
finger of his left hand. He was brought to the office of Dr. E. G. Ditch
by his hunting companions, given treatment and removed to the Marietta
Memorial hospital where he will be under observation for several days.
Schott could not explain what discharged the gun.

Wilbert Schott's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on May 11, 1975. CALDWELL -- Wilbert Schott, 69, of Caldwell died at 9:45 p.m.
Friday at a Cambridge hospital after a long illness. Mr. Sho tt was born Feb 15, 1906 in Noble County and was a
retired farmer. He was a member of the St. Stephen Catholic Church here. Surviving are the widow, the former Bessie Duff, a son, Rupart
(Pete) Schott of Canton, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Katovsky of Cleve-
and and Mrs. Bernetta Katz of Wheeling, six grandchildren; three brothers,
Urban of cleveland, Martin of Phoenix, Ariz., and Isadore of Canton and
a sister, Mrs. Rose Moran of Clearwater, Fla. The body was taken to the McVay Funeral Home here where
friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St' Stephen Church
with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.


Elizabeth Viola Duff

The following wedding announcement appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on October 25, 1930: BESSIE DUFF AND WILBUR SCHOTT WED IN CAMBRIDGE Summerfield, O., Oct 25 -- St. Benedict's Roman Catholic church, Cambridge, was the scene of a pretty wedding Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 9 o'clock when Miss Bessie duff, of that city, and Wilbur Schott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schott, Berne, were united in marriage with Rev. Fr. Clement Crock performing the nuptial high mass in the presence of the immediate relatives/ Following the ceremony the bridal party motored to the home of the groom's parents where they were tendered a reception. At noon a sumptuous dinner was served and covers laid for 40 guests and among them were Mr. and Mrs. Nick Schott, this place. A delightful social time was enjoyed throughout the day and the happy young couple were the recipients of a number of gifts and were tendered many good wishes for future happiness. On Wednesday evening a dance was held in the Berne hall in their honor and was largely attended. Mr. and Mrs. Schott will reside on the Jordan farm, near Cumberland.


Eugene R. Lieser

Alternate spellings of surnames: Liser (from Snider, citing church records at St. Mary's in Fulda, OH), Leiser (from obituary of mother-in-law Mary Ann Miller Schott).

In 1920, Eugene R.Lieser (29) rented an apartment at 2071West 85th St. in Cleveland. Other members of the household were his wife Emma H. (or Ella?) and their children Virginia D. (4 yrs 10 mos), Vernon T. (2 yrs 2 mos) and Elvira E. (4 mos). Eugene was born in Oregon. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. Eugene's father was a native of Germany and his mother was from Ohio. Eugene worked as a clerk in the post office.

By 1930, the Lieser family owned a home worth $8500 at 3564 Granton Road in Cleveland's 33rd Ward. Members of the home were Eugene (45), his wife Maude (44), and children Virginia (15), Vernon (12) and Oliva (10). All of the children attended school. Birthplaces in the 1930 census matched those in the 1920 census. Eugene worked as an office clerk for a railway mail service. The family owned a radio set.

According to the online Ohio death certificate index, Eugene Lieser was a postmaster or mail superintendent.

Thomas Leiser served in the US Navy. His death certificate classified his occupation as "manager or administrator." He was married at the time of his death.
