Clara Catherine Burkhart

Obituary (from Betty Hartley):
Clara C. Miller, 83, Barnesville, died Tuesday evening, May 24, 1994, at
Barnesville Health Care Center. She was born July 9, 1910 in Temperanceville,
daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Hughes Burkhart. She was a member of
the Church of Assumption, the Catholic Women's Club and the Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence M. Miller; a son, George;
a brother Charles Burkhart and three grandchildren.
Surviving are four sons, Vernon of Wickliff, Robert of New Castle, Ohio,
Thomas of Eastlake, and Fred of Barnesville; three daughters, Mrs. James (Evelyn)
Cook of Barnesville, Mrs. Lowell (Mary Ann) Baker of Beallsville and Mrs
Lawrence (Rita) Griffith of Woodsfield; two brothers, Herman Burkhart of
Woodsfield and Fred Burkhart of Wickliff; two sisters, Marie Miller of Boston,
and Mrs Andrew (Margaret) Nau of Caldwell; 24 grandchildren; 28 great grand-
children.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at Campbell-Plumly-
Milburn Funeral Home, Barnesville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at
10:30 AM Friday at the Church of Assumption, Barnesville, with the Rev. Charles
Mascolino, the celebrant. Burial follows in Assumption Cemetery, Barnesville.
Rosary devotions will be at 2 PM today. Christian Wake services will be today
at 8 PM.


Edna Calvert

In 1930, 28 year old Edna Miller was listed in the census as a married head of household. For $15 a month, Edna rented a portion of a home at 955 National Road in Pease Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Also living in the house was her landlord, a 54 year old German widow named Anna Hosea, and Anna's daughter's family. Living with Edna were her children, Patsy Ruth (3) and William F. (1). Edna, her parents, and her children were all born in Ohio. She was 22 years old at the time of her first marriage. Edna was not employed in 1930.


George Jerome Weisend

George was living in Canton, Ohio at the time of his mother's death in 1946.


Anna Marie Biedenbach

Wedding announcement (exact source unknown, provided by Betty Hartley):
Miss Anna Biedenbaugh, of this city and Mr. George Weisend of Canton, were
married Tuesday morning at the Church of the Assumption, by Rev. Father Gilbert.
They were attended by Miss Helen Biedenbaugh, sister of the bride, and Andrew
Weisend, brother of the groom. Mrs. Weisend is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bidenbaugh,
who moved from Coon Station, Monroe County, a few months ago, and is a young lady of
many admirable qualities. Dinner was served at the home on East Main Street, after which
sMr. and Mrs. Weisend left for a wedding trip. They will reside in Canton.


Peter Weisend

At the time of the 1880 census, 24 year old farmer Peter Weisend lived in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Mary (20) and daughter Hanna F. (6 months). The lived next to the family of John Kuhn, who might have been Mary's uncle. (This has not been proven.)

In 1900, Peter Weisend (40) owned a farm in Seneca Twp. with his wife of 21 years, Mary A. (40). All eight of their surviving children lived with them: Philomena (20), Celia (19), Catherine (14), Nicholas (10), Barbara (8), Anthony (6), George (3), and Frank (1). Catherine, Nicholas and Barbara attended school for seven months during the previous year. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Mary Ricker and Joseph Burkhart.


Mary Ann Burkhart

According to Jo-Anne Wright's web site, Mary A. Burkhart Weisent (mother of Cecilia) is the same person as Mary A. Burkhart, daughter of Anthony.

The 1900 census states that eight of Mary Weisend's nine children were still living at the time of the census. According to the census, Mary's father and mother were born in Bavaria and France, respectively.

In 1910, 50 year old widow Mary Weisend owned a farm in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. She lived there with six of her ten surviving children: Katie (24), Nicholas (20), Barbara (18), Andy (16), George (13), and Frank (10). Only George and Frank attended school. Mary's had no occupation, according to the census, but she had her "own income." Adjacent farms in the census belonged to John Snyder and William Biedenbach.

From the Zanesville Signal, pg 6, 21 Mar 1940:
Mrs. Mary Weisend of near Burkhart, was recently tendered
a post-card shower in honor of her 80th birthday. She received
114 cards and a number of other gifts from Woodsfield, Lewis-
ville, Summerfield, Columbus and other places. A dinner was
served in honor of the occasion with a number of guests present.

Mary Burkhart Weisend’s obituary appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 19 Apr 1946:
WOODSFIELD - Mrs. Mary Burkhart Weisend died at her
home on Lewisville, Route 1 Wednesday evening following
a stroke which she suffered several days ago. Funeral
services will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic church Monday
morning at 9 o’clock with Father Joseph Finan officiating.
Burial will be made in the church cemetery by the Brubach
funeral home of Summerfield. The body will remain at the
funeral home until time for the service.
Mrs. Weisend is survived by three sons and four daughters,
Nick Weisend of Lewisville, Route 1; Andy Weisend of Red
Lion, Pa.; George of Canton and Mrs. Leo Schumacher of
Woodsfield; Miss Minnie Weisend of Columbus and Mrs.
Celia Smithberger of the home. Also surviving are the fol-
lowing brothers and sisters: Nick Burkhart and Jacob Burkhart
of Lewisville, Route 1, and Mrs. Barbara Weisend of Lewisville,
Route 1; Mrs. Katherine Haren of Rockford, Illinois, and Mrs.
Minnie Burkhart of Miltonsburg.

Philomena Hannah Weisend

Philomena Weisend did not live with her widowed mother and younger siblings at the time of the 1910 census. She never married. Miss Minnie Weisend was a resident of Columbus, Ohio at the time of her mother's death in 1946.

Her obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 3 Mar 1961:

WOODSFIELD - Miss Philomena (Minnie) Weisend, 81,
of Columbus, died at 3 p.m. Thursday at the home of her
niece, Mrs. Marie Bott, in Woodsfield where she had resided
for the past week after suffering a fall at her home.
She was born Dec 22, 1879, in Monroe County, the
daughter of Peter and Mary Burkhart Weisend, and lived
for many years in Columbus.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Celia Smithberger of
Canton and Mrs. Katie Brooks of Woodsfield, and one
brother, Andy, of Barnesville.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the St.
Sylvester Catholic church here with the Rev. Fr. Robert
Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.
The body will be taken from the Brubach Funeral Home
at Summerfield to the Gardner Funeral Home at Woods-
field Saturday at noon where friends may call.
The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. at the Gardner
Funeral Home.


Josephine Weisend

Josephine Weisend died as a result of burns when she was about two years old.


Andrew J. Weisend

Also known as Anton, Andrew J. Weisend never married. It is believed that he worked on construction of the Golden Gate Bridge (which was completed in 1937). He served in World War II. Following the war, he served as a member of the fire department in Red Lion, PA. He returned to Monroe County after his retirement. His online Ohio death certificate indicates that he was a resident of Monroe County, Ohio who died out of state.

Andy lived in Red Lion, PA at the time of his mother's death in 1946.

Andy Weisend’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 8 Jan 1970:
SUMMERFIELD - Andy J. Weisend, 75, formerly of Woodsfield
and Barnesville, a retired Army career man, died at 6 a.m. Wed-
nesday (Jan. 7) at Aspinwall Veterans Hospital near Pittsburgh
where he had been a patient several years.
He was born Jan. 25 1894, in Monroe County, a son of the late
Peter and Mary Burkhart Weisend.
Mr. Weisend entered the army during World War I and served
30 years before retiring.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Katie Brooks of Woodsfield and
several nieces and nephews. A sister and three brothers are
deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Brubach
funeral home in Summerfield where the Rosary will be recited at
8 p.m. Friday.
Requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St.
Joseph Catholic Church at Burkhart with Rev. Fr. Joseph Finan as
celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Summerfield
American Legion Post will hold military services at the grave.


Frank Jacob Weisend

On 12 Sep 1918, 19 year old Frank Jacob Weisend of Rt 1, Kuhn, Monroe County, Ohio registered for the US military draft. His registration card stated that he was born on May 7, 1899 and that he worked as a farmer for Mary A. Weisend of Kuhn, Ohio. Mary was also listed as his nearest relative. Frank was described as being of medium height and build with gray eyes and dark hair.

Charles Carter Chappell

According to his World War I draft registration card, Charles Carter Chappell had blue eyes and brown hair. He was of medium height and build. Charles was an unmarried self-employed farmer. A question about disabilities on the form was answered with the word "Rupture." His birthplace and current residence were Atlas, Ohio. Birthdate was 4 Jan 1898.

In 1930, 37 year old Charles C. Chappell owned a farm worth $5000 in Somerset Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. He lived there with his wife, Hilda (23). Charles and Hilda were 37 and 18 years old, respectively, at the time of their first marriage. Living with them were their children, Bernard (4 yrs, 1 mo.), Virginia (3 yrs, 2 mos.), May (1 yr, 0 mos) and Dorothy (1 mo.). Also living in the house was a loderg: 12 year old Ohio-born boy named Albin Bulsei. Adjoining farms in the census were those of Leroy Swallie and Leonard Miller. The relationship (if any) between Hilda Miller Chappell and Leonard Miller is not known.

CHARLES C. CHAPPEL
BARNESVILLE, O. -- Funeral services were held Monday afternoon
at Boston Church of Christ for Charles C. Chappell, 64, former Somerset
Township trustee, member of the board of education and prominent
farmer.
Mr. Chappel died Friday night [9 Aug 1957] at his home on Jerusalem
Rt. 3.


Hilda E. Miller

Obituary:
Hilda E. Chappell Robb, 93, Boston Road, Jerusalem,
died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at the Woodsfield Nursing and
Rehab Center. She was born November 5, 1906 in Somerset
Township, adaughter of the late Edward and Clara Reischman
Miller. She was a member of St. John The Baptist Catholic
Church in Miltonsburg and the Somerton Grange.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her first husband, Charles Carter Chappell; her second husband,
Theodore Robb; three Daughters, Dorothy Chappell, Mary Carpen-
ter and Nina Pauline Chappell; six brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are four sons, Charles Bernard of Oberline,
Hubert Leland of Barnesville, Frank Carter of Clarington, George
Edward of Jerusalem; three daughters, Virginia Maharg of Celina,
Clare Carnett of Elyria, Ruth Beyer of Amherst; two sisters, Ada
Atkinson of Batesville, Viola Lynn of Columbus; 36 grandchildren,
several great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
Friends will be received today, 6 to 9 p.m. and Monday, 9
to 10 a.m. at Campbell-Plumly Funeral Home, Barnesville. Funeral
liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John
the Baptist Catholic Church in Miltonsburg, with the Rev. Tom Petronek
officiating. Burial follows in St. John's Cemetery, Miltonsburg. Christian
Wake service will be held today at 6 p.m. in the funeral home.
