Andrew Arnold

At the time of the 1900 census, Andrew (62) and Rosella (49) Arnold owned a farm in Wayne Twp., Muskingum Co., Ohio where they lived with their unmarried children Albert J. (22), Anna M. (20), Margaret V. (17), Frank A. (13), John B. (10) and William C. (7). All of the children except Albert attended school.

In 1910, 72 year old Andrew Arnold still owned a farm in Wayne Twp. He lived with his wife of 42 years, Rosalie (59), and unmarried children Anna M. (30), Margaret V. (27), Frank J. (22), John B. (20), and William C. (18). None of the children attended school. Rosalie had given birth to 10 children, 9 of whom were still living in 1910. Andrew was a native of Germany; Rosalie was from Switzerland. The children were all born in Ohio. Andrew and his son Frank were farmers. Margaret was a public school teacher. John worked in a tile factory. According to the census, Andrew came to America in 1839; Rosalie in 1855.

ANDREW ARNOLD IS CALLED FROM LIFE, BURIED WEDNESDAY
An illness from a complication of diseases caused the death of Andrew Arnold,
aged 80, a well known and influential farmer, residing on Route 7, in Wayne Township,
at 10 o'clock Sunday morning. His condition had been critical for the past several days.
Mr. Arnold was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the St. Nicholas Catholic
Church and was highly respected in the community in which he lived.
Surviving him are his widow and the following children; Mrs. Louis Armbrust, F.
P. Arnold, Mrs. Anthony Armbrust, Albert Arnold and John Arnold of this city; the
Misses Anna and Margaret Arnold and Frank Arnold of the home, and William C.
Arnold of the South River Road.
The funeral will be conducted at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church at 9 o'clock Wednes-
day morning. Burial will be made in Mt. Olive.

Andrew Arnold, aged 80, Civil War veteran and a successful farmer of Wayne Town-
ship, died at his home on Dietz Lane Sunday morning at 11 o'clock after an illness from
infirmities. He has been in grave condition for several.
Mr. Arnold served in the 169th O. V. I. He was a devout member of the St. Nicholas
Catholic Church.
Surviving him are his widow and the following children; Mrs. Louis Armbrust, Albert
Arnold, Mrs. Anthony Armbrust, F. P. Arnold and John Arnold, all of this city, the
Misses Anna and Margaret and Frank Arnold of the home and Willaim C. Arnold of
South River Road.
The members of the local G. A. R. will meet at the corner of Fifth and Main Streets at
2:30 this afternoon, where they will take automobiles to the Arnold home in Wayne
Township, and will hold the ritual of the organization over the body at 3 o'clock. The
funeral will be held from the St. Nicholas Church at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning and
burial will be made in Mt. Olives.

CHURCH FUNERAL FOR MRS. ARNOLD FRIDAY MORNING, NATIVE OF SWITZERLAND DIES OF PNEUMONIA AT HOME ON ROUTE SEVEN
Funeral services for Mrs. Rosella Arnold, 84, who died Tuesday morning at her home in Wayne Township, route No. 7, will be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning from St. Nicholas Catholic Church and interment will be made in Mt. Olice Cemetery by C. A. Keck.
Death followed a weeks' illness due to pneumonia. Her condition had been critical for several days and death was not unexpected.
Mrs. Arnold was a native of Switzerland but was brought to America at the age of four years and after two years' residence in Pittsburgh, the family came to Muskingum County, where she spent the rest of her life.
The deceased was the widow of Andrew Arnold, who died 17 years ago, and was a consistant member of St. Nicholas Church, also the Purgatorial and Altar societies.
Surviving are nine children, Mrs. Lewis Armbrust, Mrs. Bertha Armbrust, Mrs. Anna Hupp, Mrs. Margaret Boetcher, Fred, Albert, Frank and John Arnold, all of this city; and William Arnold of Toronto, Ohio; also 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Lang and Mrs. John Arnold, both of this city.

In 1920, 73 year old widow Rosalia Arnold owned a farm in Wayne Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio. Living with her were her unmarried daughter, Maggie (34), widowed son John (30), and John's children Marie A. (7), Raymond V. (7), and Rose M. (2 yrs 11 mos.). Only Marie attended school. Everyone in the home was a native of Ohio except Rosalia, who was a German-speaking native of Switzerland, as were her parents. John and Maggie's father was from Germany.


Frank W. Curry

In 1900, newlyweds Frank (27) and Matilda (28) Curry lived in Wayne Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio. Frank worked as a day laborer. They had no children. Matilda's parents, Joseph and Gertrude Hupp, lived next door.

At the time of the 1910 census, Frank W. Curry (37) and his wife Matilda (38) rented a home in Wayne Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio. Living with them were their children William F. (9), Frances M. (7), Joseph L. (5), and Louise T. (3). The oldest three children attended school. Frank worked as a farm laborer. The household next to the Curry's was that of Mathilda's mother and younger siblings (the Hupps), and next to them was the home of Mathilda's sister, Maggie Switzer.

In 1920, Frank Curry rented a home in Wayne Twp. He lived there with his wife Matilda (47) and children W. Ferdinand (19), Frances M. (17), Leonard J. (15), Benjamin J. (9), and David S. (3 yrs 10 mos). Only Leonard and Benjamin attended school. Frank worked as a coal miner.

In 1930, Frank W. Curry (52) rented a home at 52 Fell St., Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio for $15 a month. He lived there with his wife Matilda R. (54) and children Frances M. (28), Benjamin J (19), and David S. (14). Only David attended school. Frank was a native of Illinois; his father and mother were born in Ohio and Pennsylvania, respectively. Frank was employed as a coal miner. The Curry family did not own a radio set.


Mathilda Rose Hupp

In 1910, all four of the children that Mathilda Hupp Curry had given birth to were still living.

Obituary:
MRS. CURRY, 84, DIES AT HOME
Mrs. Mathilda Rose Curry, 84, of 1525 Maysville avenue, died at
9:30 o’clock last night [3 Aug 1956] after a lingering illness.
Mrs. Curry was born March 2, 1872 in Fulda, the daughter of
Joseph and Gertrude Dehler Hupp. She was a member of St. Nicholas
Catholic church and the Purgatorial society of the church. Her husband,
Frank, died July 12, 1950.
Surviving are four sons, Ferdinand of the home; Leonard of Boggs road,
Benjamin of McConnellsville, David of Monroe street, a daughter, Miss
Frances Curry; sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Winter of Duncan Falls, Mrs. Cecelia
Soller of Jordan avenue, Miss Veronica Eva Soller of Sharon avenue, Mrs.
Coletta Arnold of Jordan avenue; one brother, Henry of Zanesville Route 6.
A daughter, Louise, three brothers, and two sisters are deceased.
The body was removed to the Dan-Ransom funeral home. The body will
be returned to the residence, 1525 Maysville avenue, at 10 o’clock Sunday
morning where the Rosary will be recited at 8 o’clock Monday night.
Funeral services will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic church. Burial will
be in Mount Olives.

At the time of her death, Mathilda Hupp Curry had 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Joseph Damian Hupp

In 1910, Joseph D. Hupp (36) rented a home in Wayne Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio with his wife of nine years, Rosa E. (28), and sons William J. (6) and Raymond L. (3). A third child died prior to the census. Joseph was employed as a farm laborer.

At the time of the 1920 census, Joseph D. Hupp (46) rented a home on Eastman Street in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife Rose (38), and sons William and Raymond. Joseph worked as a laborer at a brick company.

In 1930, Joseph and Rose Hupp owned a house worth $880 at 1175 Eastman Street in Zanesville. Their two sons, William (27) and Raymond (24) lived with them. Joseph was employed as a laborer at a sand bank. The house next door to Joseph's was that of 32 year old John F. Hupp. The relationship between Joseph and John Hupp is not known at this time.

FUNERAL MONDAY FOR JOSEPH HUPP
Funeral services for Joseph D. Hupp, 71, of 1141 Eastman street will be held at
9 o’clock Monday morning at St. Nicholas Catholic church. Burial will be at Mt. Olives
cemetery. Mr. Hupp died Friday [28 Dec 1945] at Good Samaritan Hospital. He had
been ill since Dec. 16.
Mr. Hupp was born March 16, 1874 at Foley, O. (sic: Fulda), the son of Joseph
and Gertrude Hupp. He was an employee of the Ayres Mineral Co. for 20 years and
a member of the St. Nicholas Catholic church, the Holy Name society, and the Columbian
association of the church.
Surviving are his widow, Rosa; two sons, William Hupp of Adamsville and Raymond
Hupp of Eastman street; a brother, Henry O. Hupp of Zanesville Route 6; seven sisters,
Mrs. John Arnold of White Oak avenue, Mrs. Elizabeth Winters of Duncan Falls, Mrs.
Steven Sweitzer of Beltline avenue, Mrs. David Soller and Miss Veronica Hupp, both of
Jordan avenue, Mrs. William Soller of Sharon avenue, and Mrs. Frank Curry of Maysville
pike; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The body will remain at Mader-Peoples funeral home.

Rosa E. Switzer

According to the 1910 census, Rosa Hupp's father and mother were born in France and Ohio, respectively. However, the 1920 and 1930 census state that both her parents were natives of Ohio.

At the time of the 1930 census, Rose Hupp was employed as a laundress for a private family.

The following note, accompanied by a photo, appeared in The Zanesville Signal (pg 7) on 15 Feb 1950:
Shown above at left is Mrs. Rosa Hupp of Zanesville receiving an RCA Victor
Television set from Al Lichte, manager of the Big Bear Super Market on North
Fourth street. Mrs. Hupp was the winner of the set in a contest conducted by
the local store.
The television set in the photo appears to have a screen that is sbout 12 inches in diameter.


Rosa Swtizer Hupp's obituary:
Mrs. Rosa E. Hupp, 87, of 1141 Eastman street died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday
(June 29) at Good Samaritan Hospital where she had been a patient four weeks.
She had been ill six years.
She was born 9 Nov 1881, in Coshocton County, a daughter of John and Mary
Switzer. She had been a resident of Zanesville 80 years. She was the widow of
Joseph Hupp.
Surviving are a son, Raymond Hupp of 1231 Eastman street; a sister, Mrs.
Maggie Prosser of Canton, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A son,
William, three brothers and a sister are deceased.
Friends may call at DeLong and Baker Funeral Home 7 to 9 p.m. today and from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

John F. Hupp

John is identified as John F. Hupp, step-son of Stephen Switzer in the 1900 census. In 1910, he is referred to as John F. Switzer, son of Stephen Switzer.


Stephen Switzer

At the time of the 1900 census, newlyweds Stephen (24) and Maggie (23) Switzer rented a home in Wayne Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio. Also living in the home was Maggie's son John F. Hupp (2). Stephen worked as a day laborer.

In 1910, Stephen Switzer (35) lived on a rented farm in Wayne Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio with his wife Maggie (33) and children John F. (12), Mary T. (9), Emma R. (8), William O. (4), and Clements (1 yr 7 mos.). The oldest three children attended school. Stephen was employed as a laborer in a sand bank. Maggie's mother, Gertrude Hupp, and several of her younger siblings lived next door, and Maggie's sister Mathilda Hupp Curry lived next door to their mother.

In 1930, Stephen Switzer (55) owned a home worth $2000 at 1249 Belt Line Ave. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife, Margaret (53) and children Emma R. (26), Otto W. (24), Gertrude A. (17), and Dorothy C. (14). Only Dorothy attended school. According to the census, Stephen and his mother were born in Ohio. His father was a native of France. Stephen was employed as a laborer in the sand banks. The Switzer family did not own a radio set.

On 20 Feb 1958, the Zanesville Times Recorder reported the real estate transfer of a lot in the Elm street addition from Stephen Switzer to Delores E. Sims.

Otto W. Switzer

In 1930, Otto W. Switzer lived with his parents and siblings in Zanesville, Ohio. He worked as a caster in a pottery factory.

The 1973 obituary of Otto's sister, Gertrude Switzer Dailey, states that her brother Otto was deceased.


Clements Switzer

Clements Switzer was not listed as a surviving child in his mother's 1950 obituary.


William Winters

In 1910, 47 year old farmer William Winters rented a farm in Salt Creek Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio, where he lived with his wife, Elizabeth (30) and son Bernard H. (10 mos). According to the 1910 cenus, Elizabeth and William Winters had been married for about 1 year. This was the first marriage for both of them. The census also states that Elizabeth had given birth to a child who died prior to the 1910 census. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio. William's parents were German, and Elizabeth's were from Pennsylvania.

At the time of the 1920 census, William (57) and Elizabeth (40) Winters owned a farm in Salt Creek Twp. Living with them were their two daughters, Mary M. (9), and Mildred L. (4 yrs, 2 mos.) Mary attended school. All members of the home were born in Ohio. Several other families named Winters were listed on the same page of the census, but the relationship between these families is not known at this time.

Ten years later, the family still owned a farm in Salt Creek Twp. The household consisted of William (68), Elizabeth, (50), Mary (19), and Mildren (14). Both girls attended school. Census data indicate that William and Elizabeth were married around 1909.

William Winters’ obituary was published in the Zanesville Signal on 27 Apr 1950:
Funeral services for William Winters, 87, of Duncan Falls, will
be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the home of a daughter,
Mrs. Roy McConaha of Duncan Falls, Route 1. Rev.B. C. Kreis will
officiate and burial will be in Duncan Falls cemetery.
Mr. Winters died late yesterday afternoon at the home of another
daughter, Mrs. Robert Johnson of Philo.
A former resident of Perry and Salt Creek townships, he moved
to Duncan Falls 10 years ago.
Surviving besides his two daughters are his widow, the former
Elizabeth Hupp; a sister, Mrs. Mary Rush of Chandlersville; 13
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A daughter, a
son, and two brothers preceded him in death.
He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church at Sonora,
the Malta Lodge F. & A. for the past 64 years.
The body will be taken to the McConaha residence tomorrow
morning from the Henderson Sharp funeral home at Duncan Falls.


Elizabeth Hupp

Elizabeth Hupp Winters' obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on May 20, 1959.
79-YEAR OLD WOMAN DIES AFTER STROKE
Mrs. William Winters, 79, of Chandlersville route 1, died
at 11:45 p.m. Monday in Good Samaritan Hospital where
she had been admitted a few hours earlier following a
stroke.
Mrs. Winters, the former Elizabeth Hupp, was born Feb.
23, 1880, in Fulda, Noble County, a daughter of Joseph and
Gertrude Dehler Hupp. She spent most of her life in the
Duncan Falls community before moving to Chandlersville
Route 1 eight years ago.
Mrs. Winters, whose husband died in 1950, was a mem-
ber of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Johnson of
Duncan Falls and Mrs. Mary McConaha of Chandlersville
route 1 with whom she made her home; three sisters, Mrs.
Cecillia Soller and Miss Veronica Hupp, both of 335 Jordan
avenue, and Mrs. Eva Soller of 1435 Sharon avenue; one
brother, Henry Hupp of Route 6; 16 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
A son and a daughter preceded her in death.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Nicholas
Church with burial in Duncan Falls cemetery. The body is at
the Clyde E Thompson funeral Home in Duncan Falls where
friends may call and where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
Wednesday.

Henry Otto Hupp

In 1910, 27 year old farmer Henry O. Hupp was listed as the head of the household that contained his widowed mother, Gertrude (60). older brother Ferdinand (32), and younger sisters Rosa C. (19) and Frances F. (16). They lived on a rented farm in Wayne Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio. Henry's married sisters -- Maggie Switzer and Mathilda Curry -- lived in the adjacent households in the census.

Henry O. Hupp's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on September 10, 1964.
Henry O. Hupp, 82, of route 6 was dead on arrival at Good
Samaritan Hospital Wednesday morning after an apparent
heart attack.
Mr. Hupp was born May 7, 1882, in Noble County, a son
of Joseph and Gertrude Dehler Hupp.
He was a retired farmer and had lived near Zanesville 60
years.
Mr. Hupp was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church,
Holy Name Society, Columbia Association, Purgatorial So-
ciety and Eagles Lodge.
Surviving are his widow, Anna; and three sisters, Mrs.
Veronica Hupp, Mrs. William Soller and Mrs. David Soller,
all of 335 Jorden street. Five sisters and two brothers are
deceased.

Anna M. Arnold

Records conflict on surname. Delores Snider, citing church records of St. Marys in Fulda, gives "Anna Yaron" as the name. Phillip Bohn says "Anna Arnold" is the wife of Henry O. Hupp.

HUPP SERVICE
Funeral service for Mrs. Anna M. Hupp, 92, of Route 6,
who died Thursday, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St.
Nicholas Catholic church with burial in Mount Olive
Cemetery.
The body is at Hillis Funeral Home where friends may
call from 2 to 4 7 to 9 p.m. today. The Rosary will be
recited at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be: Albert Arnold, Delmar Arnold,
Clarence Arnold, Don Freiermuth, Frank Armbrust and
Roy Snurr.


David A. Soller

In 1930, David (49) and Cecilia (45) Soller lived at 458 Sharon Ave., Zanesville, Ohio in a home rented by Cecilia's sister, Veronica Hupp (36). David worked as a cook in a restaurant. There were no children in the household.

Cecelia Hupp Soller's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on February 12, 1977.
Mrs. Cecelia Soller, 92, of 335 Jordan Ave., died at 12:03
p.m. Friday at Good Samaritan Medical Center after a long
illness.
Mrs. Soller was born Dec. 18, 1884, in fulda. Her husband,
David, preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. Nicholas catholic church and the
Altar and Rosary and Purgatorial societies of the church. For
many years she worked as a cook at the old Bailey Drug Store
and the YWCA.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Veronica Hupp and Mrs. Eva
Soller, both of the home; and a number of nieces and nephews
including Clarence Arnold, also of the home.
The body was taken to DeLong and Baker Funeral Home
where friends may call after 2 p.m. today.


Eva D. Hupp

In 1920, Eva lived with her widowed mother, and unmarried siblings Ferdinand, Rosa and Frances at 566 Sharon Ave. in Zanesville. Eva was the only one of her siblings who was not employed outside the home.
