The following note appeared on page 10 of the Zanesville Signal on 30 Apr 1954:
CALDWELL -- May Day festival will be held this evening, in the Caldwell high school auditorium at 8 o’clock. Coronation of Lura (sic) Estadt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Estadt, will take place. Lynn Ditch, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. G. Ditch will serve as maid of honor. Arene Henderson, Marilyn Schott and Julia Estadt will serve as the attendants. Roberta Heddleson will be the crown bearer. Music will be furnished by the eighth grade and English classes accompanied on the piano by Sally Evilsizer. Gray Tuecke is the director

WEDDING DINNER
[Caldwell] Guests for the wedding dinner of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence J. Estadt, who
were married Thursday at the St. Mary’s Catholic church in Marietta, included: Rev.
Father H. A. Estadt, and Miss Betty Simons, Columbus; Miss Matilda Estadt, Wash-
ington. C.H.; Mr. and Mrs. Leanderd Smithberger and Lester Smithberger, Lower Salem
route; Harold Smithberger, Medina; Miss Enid Hovey, Marietta; Mr. and Mrs. Larry
Smithberger, Welch, W.Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Estadt, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Estadt,
Mr. and Mrs. William Estadt, Mrs. James F. Hovey, and John D. Wheeler, Caldwell.
Immediately following the dinner, the couple left for a short wedding trip through the
east. Mr. Estadtis the former Thelma Smithberger. Rev. Fr. Estadt, brother of the bride-
groom, officiated for the single ring ceremony.

WHIPPLE — Lester Raymond Smithberger, 75, of DAV Road, Whipple,
died on Sunday (Dec. 24, 2006) at his residence. He was born on Dec. 22, 1931, in Harriettsville, Ohio, to Leander and
Clara Crum Smithberger. Lester graduated from Lower Salem High
School in 1949. He served his country in the United States Army from
August of 1955 to August of 1957. Lester worked at New Weihl Olds as
a service manager, retiring after 38 years of service. After retirement,
he worked for Pioneer Chevrolet as a driver group leader. He was a
member of St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed his job driving cars
for Pioneer and, most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Timothy Smithberger (Trisha) of Marietta;
three grandsons, Tyler, Troy and Tyson Smithberger; and several nieces
and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Verna
Smithberger, on Feb. 21, 2006; they were married on June 7, 1958. His
sister, Thelma M. Estadt, and brother, Larry Smithberger, also preceded
him in death. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday (Dec.
27, 2006) at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor John
Michael Campbell celebrating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial
Park, with full military honors observed. Visitation will be on Tuesday
from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples
Funeral Home. There will be a vigil service held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at

Verna Irene Weppler

Obituary:

WHIPPLE — Verna Irene Smithberger, 71, of 260 DAV Road, Whipple, died at 5:57 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 21, 2006) at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 1, 1934, in Marietta, to Carl E. and Lillian M. Zimmer Weppler. She was a 1952 graduate of Marietta High School <http://www.mariettatimes.com/communities/schools/marietta/mhs.asp>. Verna had worked at Sperry Rand and also for 12 years at the State Nursery. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Catholic Woman’s Club. Spending time with her grandsons was Verna’s favorite activity. She is survived by her husband, Lester R. Smithberger, whom she married on June 7, 1958; a son, Timothy Smithberger (Trisha) of Marietta; three grandsons, Tyler, Troy and Tyson Smithberger; a sister, Juanita Hinkle of Marietta; a brother, Harold Weppler (Dora) of Whipple; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl L. Weppler. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday (Feb. 24) at St. Mary Catholic Church with Monsignor John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park. Herman George Smithberger

In 1910, Herman G. Smithberger (31), his wife Minnie N. (38), and son Floyd D. (6) owned a farm in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Herman was employed as a teamster. According to the census, his father and mother were from Ohio and Germany respectively. Minnie's father and mother were natives of West Virginia and Ohio. The couple had been married for 8 years and had only one child.

On Sept. 12, 1918, 40 year old self-employed farmer Herman George Smithberger of R.F.D. #1, Lower Salem, Washington County, Ohio filled out a U.S. military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as June 1st, 1878. Herman's nearest relative was Floyd D. Smithberger of Lower Salem.. Herman was described as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair, with no obvious physical disabilities.

At the time of the 1920 census, widower Herman J. Smithberger (40) and his son Floyd D. (16) owned a farm in Elk Twp. Herman was a farmer, and Floyd attended school. Herman's widowed mother lived a few doors away in the census.

Edmund August Smithberger

On Set. 12, 1918, 35 year old self-employed farmer Edmund A. Smithberger of Stanleyville, [Washington County] Ohio filled out a U.S. military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as Aug. 17 1883. His nearest relative was Mary Smithberger of Stanleyville. Ernest was described as being of medium height and build with gray eyes and black hair, with no obvious physical disabilities.


Rudolph Charles Smithberger

In 1930, Rudolph C. Smithberger (44) and his wife Clara S. (39) owned a farm in Lawrence Twp., Washington County, Ohio. Living with them was their daughter, Sylvia (12). Rudolph was employed as a laborer on the State Road. Like many of their neighbors, the Smithberger family owned a radio set.
