CALDWELL - Robert J. Schoeppner will always be remembered for his love of family and his passion for the outdoors and NASCAR.

Family and friends of the 46-year-old Marietta man are dealing with his sudden death Saturday afternoon in a hunting accident in southern Noble County. Schoeppner died about 3:30 p.m. at Marietta Memorial Hospital after being shot in the back when another hunter's shotgun accidentally discharged.

"I don't know what to say about him," said Schoeppner's sister, Linda Marshall, of Marietta. "He was just a good, good man. There's no words to write down what kind of a person he was."

Carol Wells, spokeswoman for the Ohio Division of Wildlife, said Schoeppner was with a group of hunters when his companion's weapon went off while the man was attempting to unload it. The name of the 43-year-old Marietta man has not been released. No charges have been filed. The incident remains under investigation.

Wells said while the accident happened during deer hunting season, which ended Sunday, authorities are not investigating it as a hunting-related incident because the group had finished for the day when Schoeppner was wounded.

The shooting happened on public land about six miles south of Caldwell, Wells said. "It's pretty shocking to the entire family," Marshall said. "It's pretty unbelievable."

Marshall said her brother returned to Noble County to hunt each year. The large family grew up in Harriettsville, she said, where Schoeppner's love of baseball blossomed and his eagerness to hunt and fish came naturally.

The 1973 Skyvue High School graduate earned his engineering degree from Ohio University in 1978. He has worked 22 years as an engineer at the American Electric Power Muskingum River Plant. Marshall chuckled at how her brother supported his alma mater but was an even bigger fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was also an avid NASCAR racing fan, and followed driver Bill Elliott. He was a Bantam League baseball coach for 10 years.

"He was always there for his friends and did everything for anyone," Marshall said as she held back tears. "He was a very good Christian man and he was a real family-oriented person."
