Joseph Bettinger

In 1910, 25 year old Joseph Bettinger lived in Jefferson Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 23 year old wife Ethel and their one year old daughter Bernice.

At the time of the 1920 census, Joseph Beddinger (35) and his wife Bertha (26) owned a farm in Jefferson Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with them were daughters Bernice (11) and Frances (2 yrs 3 mos), and Joseph's widowed father, John (75).

In 1930, Joseph (45) and Bertha (37) still lived in Jefferson Township. Also living in the household were their children Francis A. (12), Clarence E. (9), and Gladis I. (8). All of the children attended school. The family did not own a radio set. Calculations from information in the census indicate that Joseph was first married around 1906, and Bertha was first married in 1913.

JOSEPH BETTINGER DIES SUDDENLY
CALDWELL, March 4 - Joseph Bettinger, 61, retired
farmer and oil field worker died suddenly at 12:30 this after-
noon at the family home on Bridge street as the result of a
heart attack.
He was born in Middleburg, O., and resided there
until coming to Caldwell, 11 years ago.
Surviving in addition to his widow, the former Bertha
Young, are a son, Clarence, of the home, three daughters,
Mrs. Gladys Miller of Rt. 4, Mrs. Frances Hesson of Dexter
City, and Mrs. Bernice Templeton of Edinburg, O.; a sister,
Mrs. Mary Hupp of Zanesville, three brothers, Alex and Henry
of Middleburg and Andrew of Dexter City; 12 grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren.
The body will remain at the McVay funeral home
until services are held at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. A. J.
Staats of the Free Methodist church in charge. Burial will
be in Olive Cemetery.


Ethel Clark

According to the 1910 census, Ethel and her parents were natives of Ohio. She had given birth to two children, one of whom died prior to 1910.

Bertha Earnestine Young

According to the 1920 and 1930 census, Bertha and her mother were born in Ohio. Her father was a native of Michigan.


Clarence Edward Bettinger

Clarence Bettinger never married. According to the online Ohio death certificate index, he was employed in the field of national security and international affairs.


Andrew Bettinger

On 15 Jun 1917, 28 year old self-employed farmer Andrew Bettinger of Harriettsville, Ohio filled out a US Draft Registration card. He gave his date and place of birth as 13 Dec 1888 in Middlebrook, Ohio. He stated that he had a wife and two children. He was described as being of medium height and slender build, with brown eyes and dark hair, with no physical disabilities.

At the time of the 1920 census, Andrew (31) and Margaret (30) Bettinger owned a farm in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with them were their two sons, Elmer C. (6) and Lewis Andy (5). Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio, as were Andy and Margaret's mothers. Their fathers were from Germany and Michigan, respectively.

In 1930, Andy (41) and Margaret (40) Bettinger owned a farm worth $600 in Elk Twp. where they lived with their sons Elmer C. (17), Lewis A. (15) and Ralph H. (7). All three boys attended school. Birthplaces agreed with those in the 1920 census.

Andy Bettinger was a resident of Noble County at the time of his death.


Margaret Young

Margaret Bettinger lived in Lower Salem in 1967, according to the obituary of her sister, Freda Young Smith. (12 Sep 1967, Zanesville Times Recorder).


Lewis Andrew Bettinger

According to the Zanesville Signal (20 May 1938), Lewis Bettinger was a school teacher in the Elk rural school district in 1938.

The Zanesville Times Recorder reported on 1 Jul 1938 that Lewis Bettinger of Lower Salem had enrolled for the summer term at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.


Ralph Huron Bettinger

Excerpted from the Zanesville Times Recorder, 22 Aug 1946:
MORE MEN ENLIST IN ARMY HERE
… Ralph H. Bettinger, Route 2, Dexter City,
reenlisted for three years in the Military Police corps
as private first class. Bettinger was discharged from
the 203rd MP Battalion Dec 5, 1945.

According to the online Ohio death certificate index, Ralph Bettinger was a widowed resident of Washington County, Ohio at the time of his death. He was a farmer.


Simeon Springer

The 1860 census lists an eight year old named Simon Springer living in Elk Twp. Noble Co., Ohio (pg 224, lines 29-37). He lives with his parents, Jacob and Mary, and several siblings. Everyone in the home was born in Ohio. It is not known if the son of Jacob Springer is the same man as the father of Ida and Jessie Springer.


John Adam Becker

Records conflict on date of birth. Dolores Snider gives 30 Aug 1882. But the following notice appeared in the "Fulda" column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 14 Sep 1882:
Births - On the 1st, a son to Valentine Berker [Becker] and his wife.

In 1900, 17 year old John A. Beeker lived with his widowed mother and siblings in Wheeling, WV. John was employed as a cigar maker. He did not attend school.

At the time of the 1910 census, John Becker lived with several of his unmarried siblings in a rented home on Jacob St. in Wheeling. John worked as a stair maker (?) in a factory, but he was unemployed at the time of the census.

John Becker has not been found in the 1920 or 1930 census.


Walter Earl Scott

In 1920, Walter E. Scott (32) and his wife Gertrude L. (35) rented part of a two-family home on Locust Ave. in Triadelphia, Ohio County, West Virginia. Living with the couple were their children Gertrude C. (5), Marian (4 yrs 1 mo.) and Mildred (10 mos.) Walter was born in West Virginia. His parents were natives of Ohio. Walter was employed as a drill press machinist. Gertrude's brother Joseph Becker lived a few doors away.

The Scott family has not been found in the 1930 census.


Gertrude L. Becker

In 1900, 15 year old Gertrude Beeker lived with her widowed mother and older siblings in Wheeling, WV. Gertrude did not attend school. She worked in a factory.

At the time of the 1910 census, 24 year old Gertrude Becker lived with several of her unmarried siblings in a rented house on Jacob St. in Wheeling. Gertrude was an employee at a stamping company.


Ralph Edward Miller

In 1930, nephew Ralph E. Miller (22) lived with the family of his sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Glen W. Morrison in a home they owned (value $5000) at 1136 Lexington Ave., Zanesville, Muskingum Co., Ohio. Ralph as a laborer in a box factory.


Gladys I. Bettinger

Gladys Miller was still living in Feb 2003.
