Mary Jean Sanford

Mary Jean Bird, age 84, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, Ohio. She was born May 1, 1925, in Noble County, daughter of the late Howard and Freda Barnhart Sanford. She was a 1943 graduate of Caldwell High School, where she was the homecoming queen. She was retired from Crock Construction Company where she was employed as a bookkeeper. She attended Mary Reed United Methodist Church at Crooked Tree. Mrs. Bird enjoyed the outdoors, camping, and fishing, and she loved her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry William Bird, whom she married November 20, 1949, and who died January 12, 2000; two sisters, Patricia Hansen and Marjorie McCalla; and three brothers, Bob, Bill, and Dick Sanford. Surviving are her children, Jacqueline (Lendel) Byrd , Sue (Joseph H.) Archer, and Thomas C. (Corissa) Bird, all of Caldwell; one brother, Larry Sanford of Dexter City; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild, and 2 more on their way; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call Sunday, May 10, 2009, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will be held Monday, May 11th at 1:30PM with Pastor Ken Ogg officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Cemetery, Caldwell.


Loyd Nichols

Loyd E. Nichols, age 56, of Cumberland, Ohio, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at OSU Medical Center in Columbus. He was born October 13, 1952, in Zanesville, son of the late Dr. Stanley Ernest and F. Elva Burton Nichols. He was a 1970 graduate of Caldwell High School, and he received an associates degree in applied science from Zane State. He was formerly employed as a dozer operator for Central Ohio Coal Company, and he was currently employed as an operator for the Jefferson Water and Sewer District in Blacklick. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Byesville. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Harold Nichols, and one nephew, Derek Nichols. Surviving are his wife, Faith D. Doan Nichols, whom he married November 2, 1991; his step-mother, Mina Nichols of the home; two daughters, Melissa (David) Heppner of Fairborn and Jessica (Jared) Winkleman of Pleasant City; one son, Larry W. Thompson of Cumberland; five grandchildren, Reid and Emma Heppner, Jarica and Jaelee Winkleman, and Lexi Thompson; and two special cousins, Gary St. Clair of Plain City and Nancy Secrest of Hoskinsville. Friends may call Sunday, June 21, 2009, from 2-4 qnd 6-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where the funeral service will be held Monday, June 22 at 1PM with Pastor Dennis Rost officiating.
