John Burkhart did not own any real estate, but his personal possessions were valued at $200. John was born in Bavaria, his wife in Pennsylvania, and the children in Ohio. John could read, but not write. Mary was able to read and write. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Levi Sebaugh and Adam Shell.

John and Mary had been married for 37 years.

Mary Ann Demuth

Mary's parents were born in Germany. At the time of the 1900 and 1910 census, nine of Mary Demuth Burkhart's ten children were still living. Various sources name 12 children... further research needs to be done to clarify the issue.

In 1910, recently widowed Mary Burkhart (63) rented a home at 1335 McColloch St. in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Living with her were her two sons, William S. (27) and Otto A. (22). Mary's occupation is listed as "own income."

Mary Burkhart

Sources conflict on year of birth:

Dora C. Burkhart

Dora does not appear in the 1880 census. There is, however, a three month old child named Chas M. Burkhart in the family on 01 June 1880. That would put Chas' birthdate at around Feb 1880. The two children -- Dora and Chas -- cannot both be biological children of John and Mary Burkhart because their birthdates are only three months apart.

Dora's sex is unknown. "Dora" could be short for "Dorothy" (which was an uncommon name in German communiities in the late 19th century). A more likely possibility is a nickname for Isadore.

Joseph Burkhart

Sixteen year old Joseph does not appear with the family in the 1900 census.
