Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Daniel A. Conners

Sources conflict on many points: Handwritten notes in a copy of "The Singer Family History" obtained from William Vogler contain several different dates of death for Daniel Conners: 1952, 1953, 26 Jun 1955, and 26 Jul 1953. The notes also refer to two different marriage dates: Oct 1903, and 13 Oct 1904. Sources also conflict on place of birth:
Fox & Muth: County Wexford, Ireland
1910 census: West Virginia

At the time of the 1910 census, Daniel A. Connors (42) and his wife of five years, Rosa C. (43) owned a mortgaged home at 2232 Jacob Street in the Center District, 4th Precinct of Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. This was the first marriage for Daniel, but the second for Rosa. Rosa's four children from her first marriage lived with them: Frederick G. (21), William F. (19), Morris R. (17) and Mary C. (15). Daniel and Rosa did not have any children together. Only Rosa attended school. According to the census, Daniel was born in West Virginia to Irish-born parents. Daniel was employed as a railroad engineer.

By 1920, they had moved away from 2232 Jacob... another family lived at that address. A line-by-line search of the census for that neighborhood, as well as a search of the 1920 census index, has not turned up Daniel and Rosa Connors.

According to Rosa's father's 1926 obituary, she was living in Wheeling, as was her sister, Tillie Fisher.

Rosa Christina Fox

A note in the Caldwell, OH paper dated 12 Jul 1888 stated:
Mrs. Rose Bosold, wife of Ferdinand Bosold of Wheeling W.Va is visiting her
parents and relations in this vicinity.

And on 26 Jul 1888 it was reported that
Mrs. Ferdinand Bosold and Mr. John Hohman returned to their home in Wheeling
Monday, after a few weeks visit here.

On 7 Jan 1897, the paper noted:
Mrs. Fred Fox was called to Wheeling recently on account of the serious illness
of her daughter, Mrs. F. Bosold.

The Bosold family has not been found in a search of the genealogy.com index for the 1900 census for Ohio and West Virginia.

Rosa Fox Conner's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) on March 24, 1952

15, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Lee Vogler, after an illness of three
months.
Mrs. Conners, a native of Noble county, was the eldest of nie (sic) children.
She was the daughter of Frederick and Sybilla Fox of Fulda.

Vogler, three sons, Fred and Maurice Bosold of Wheeling and William Bosold
of Naples, N. Y., five sisters, Mrs. Fred Fisher of Wheeling, Mrs. Ambrose

of Dudley, and Mrs. Sebast Holman (sic) of Harriettsville; three brothers, Her-
man Fox of Toledo, Ignatz of Caldwell and Albert Fox of Canton.

Ferdinand Frederick Fisher

In 1880, 16 year old Ferdinand Fisher lived with his widowed mother and siblings in the Village of Fulda, Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He attended school and worked as a farm laborer.

Ferdinand and Eva Fisher moved to Wheeling WV after their marriage, but later returned. The Caldwell Ohio newspaper reported on 7 Jan 1897:
Ferd. Fisher of Wheeling and S. Arnold of Pittsburg have moved their
families to this place.

The move was apparently temporary, as the paper reported on 22 Apr 1897:
Ferdinand Fisher and family, who spent the winter here, have returned to
their home at Wheeling.

At the turn of the century, Fred Fisher (37) rented a dwelling at 2356 Wood St. in Wheeling. Living with him were his wife Matilda (31), and sons Albert (9), William (7) and Carl (5). According to the census, Matilda did not have any children who were deceased. Ferdinand worked as a teamster in a planing mill.

In 1910, Ferdinand Fischer (45) and his wife E. Matilda (41) owned a mortgaged two-family house at 2356 Wood St. in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia with their children Albert F. (20), William F. (18), Carl (14) and Marie (4). Only Carl attended school. Ferdianand was employed as a driver for a planing mill. The other portion of the house was rented out to the family of fellow Fulda native Ambrose Becker.

In 1930, Fred Fisher (66) owned the house worth $2200 at 2356 Wood St. There were no other families living in the house. Fred lived with his 60 year old wife, Matilda and children Carl J. (34) and Marie E. (24). Fred was employed as a mixer for a tile manufacturer. Carl was a justice of the peace.

According to his death certificate, Ferdinand worked as a watchman at a tile factory.

Eva Matilda Fox

Alternate date of birth (Muth & Fox): 24 Dec 1868

According to a note in the Caldwell, Ohio newspaper, Eva Fox Fisher was ill in April 1890. Her mother Sybilla Singer Fox, came to take care of her. When Sybilla returned home, she brought her grandchild (presumably William) with her.

Tillie's father's 1926 obituary states that his daughter, Mrs. Fred Fisher, was living in Wheeling, as was her sister, Rosa Conners.

Carl J. Fisher

Carl Fisher was a Justice of the Peace He married late in life.

Marie E. Fisher

Marie Fisher was handicapped. She never married. Date of death (from death certificate index) has not been proven.

Ambrose Andrew Schwallie

Records conflict on place of birth. Thomas Singer gives Zanesville, OH as place of birth. Delores Snider states that church records show he was baptized in Fulda, Noble Co. Since Zanesville is over 50 miles northeast of Fulda, it's questionable whether he was born in Zanesville and baptized in Fulda. Muth & Fox show that Ambrose Schwallie was born in Berne (later called Carlisle), Noble Co., OH.

An oddity about Ambrose Schwallie is that his wife and his mother had the same maiden name: Mary Fox. The two women are not known to be related.

In the 1890s, Ambrose Schwallie and his older brother Frank owned a dry goods store in Fulda. The store burned to the ground in 1898. After moving to Zanesville, Ambrose ran a grocery store there. His son Fred later took over operation of the same store. (source: Schockling)

In 1900, Ambrose (31) and A. Mary (29) Schwallie lived at 148 Marietta Road in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Living with them were their sons, F. Hugo (6) and Clements (4), as well as a boarder, 17 year old Albert Fox (Mary's brother). Ambrose was a grocer, and Albert worked as a grocery clerk. Hugo Schwallie attended school.

At the time of the 1910 census, Ambrose Schwallie (42) and his wife Mary (38) owned a home at 486 Sharon Ave. in Zanesville. They lived there with their four children, Hugo (16), Clement (14), Margaret (7) and Frederick (4). Ambrose was a grocery merchant.

In 1920, "Andrew" Schwallie lived in the same house the family occupied 10 years earlier. Living with him were his wife Mary, and children Margaret (19) and Frederick (13). Both children attended school. Ambrose's occupation is listed as "retail grocery salesman."

Ten years later, in 1930, the family home at 486 Sharon Ave. was valued at $5000.. the most expensive home on that page of the census. Living there were Ambrose (62), Mary (58), son Frederick (24), and daughter Margaret Glitsch (27) and her husband Christian J. Glitsch Jr. (26). Ambrose was a grocery merchant.

The following article appeared on page 7 of The Zanesville Signal on 3 May 1943:
MR. AND MRS. SCHWALLIE MARRIED 50 YEARS
Rev. Father Joseph Bender, pastor of St. Nicholas Catholic
church read a mass of thanksgiving Sunday morning commemorating
the Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose A. Schwallie of Sharon
avenue. Mrs. Schwallie, who is 72 years of age, is the former Maryann
Fox, of Fulda, and her marriage to Mr. Schwallie, now 75 years old, took
place in the Catholic church there with Rev. Father Hanson officiating.
They have lived in this city for 47 years and observed the anniversary
with a family dinner at the Zane hotel.
Mr. Schwallie entered the grocery business on Sharon avenue in
1897, and with the exception of a few years, has been in business at the
same location ever since.
Mr. and Mrs. Schwallie are the parents of four children, three
of whom are living. They are Hugo, of Cleveland, and Margaret and Fred
of the home. A son, Clement J., lost his life in World War I. They have
two grandchildren, Donald and Edward, of Cleveland.

Ambrose Schwallie died unexpectedly less just three weeks after the 50th wedding anniversary celebration. His obituary appeared on page 8 of The Zanesville Signal on 25 May 1943:
A. A. SCHWALLIE, 75, DIES ON SHARON AV.
Ambrose A. Schwallie, 75, of 1327 Sharon avenue, veteran
retail grocer, died suddenly early today at his home. He had been in
the grocery business here for 45 years, operating a store at 1299
Sharon avenue.
On May 2, he and Mrs. Schwallie observed their 50th
wedding anniversary. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic
church, the Columbian and Purgatorial societies and also belonged
to the B.P.O. Elks.
Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Hugo
Schwallie of Cleveland, and Fred A. Schwallie of the home; a daughter,
Miss Margaret Schwallie, also of the home; a brother, John Schwallie
of Fulda, O., and two grandchildren living in Cleveland. A son, Clement
J., died while serving in the army during the first World War.
Funeral services will be held a 9 o’clock Friday morning at St.
Nicholas Catholic church. Burial will be in Mt. Olives. The body will
be removed to the residence at noon tomorrow from the Keck funeral
home.

Maria Anna Fox

A note in the Caldwell Ohio newspaper dated 12 Jan 1893 stated:
Miss Marian Fox has returned from Wheeling where she has been
for some time.
(Marian's older married sisters, Rosa Fox Bosold and Eva Fox Fisher, both lived in Wheeling.)

From the "Chit-Chat" column of The Zanesville Signal, 24 Oct 1924:
Mrs. A. Schwallie of Sharon avenue has returned from Fulda,
O., where she was called by the very serious illness of her father,
Frederick Fox.

Several Zanesville newspaper articles in the 1930s and 40s list Mary Schwallie as a member of the "Gold Star Mothers," a group of women who lost sons in the armed service.

According to his father's 1926 obituary, H. G. Fox lived in Malvern [Carroll County] Ohio. His mother's 1928 obituary puts him in Canton. Herman and Lucy Fox have not been found in the 1930 census index for Ohio.

Seventeen year old Albert Fox is not listed in the household of his parents at the 1900 census. At that time, he lived with the family of his married older sister, Mary Ann and Ambrose Schwallie, in Zanesville. He worked as a grocery clerk (probably in Ambrose Schwallie's store). In 1918, Albert and Mary Fox moved to Canton, Ohio, where he worked as a sign painter and automatic tool grinder.

In 1910, Albert (27) and Mary M. Fox (24) owned a mortgaged home at 730 Moxahala Avenue, Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio with their three children, Frederick (3), Eulalia R. (2), and Bernadetta (1). Albert was employed as a street car conductor.

William La Zebnuck was a milwright. He died at 1118 Queen City Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cecilia Eva Fox

Cecelia Fox has not been found in the 1910 census index. The only woman named Cec* Fox in Ohio in the 1910 census index was a 25 year old unmarried Ohio-born woman who worked as an attendant in the Lonview Hospital for the Insane in Cincinnati.

Sebastian Casper Hohman

On June 5, 1917, self-employed farmer Sebastian Casper Hohman (29, born October 2, 1887 in Harriettsville, Ohio) of RFD Harriettsville, Ohio registered for the military draft. George Bosold

In 1850, 32 year old shoemaker George Bosold lived in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio with his 20 year old wife Augusta, and their son Morris (1).

The 1870 census counted people who were living on June 30, 1870. On that date shoemaker George Bosold (46) lived in Enoch Twp., with his wife Augusta (30) and children John M. (10), Katherine (9), Mary E. (6), Ferdinand (4) and Leonard (2). John and Katherine attended school. Although George Bosold was alive on June 30, he was deceased when the census taker visited the household seveal weeks later on August 13, 1870. The family's real estate was valued at $800, and their personal possessions wer worth $175. John (who was a citizen) and Augusta were born in Hesse Cassel; the children were all born in Ohio. Also enumerated in the household were day-laborer Adam Hill (61) and Mary A. Hill (34). Their relationship to the Bosold family is not known. Adjacent households in the census were those of grocer Charles & Philomena (Hohman) Stark -- George Bosold's brother-in-law, and blacksmith Charles Ramsey.

Augusta Hohman

In the 1850 census, Augusta is incorrectly listed as a male. The 1860 census states that Augusta Hohman Bosold was born in Hesse. On the next farm in the census, her aunt Ann Maria Hohmann Schott's birthplace is Byrne (Bayern/Bavaria?). Both women are believed to have been born in or near Mittelkalbach, Landkreis Fulda, Germany.

At the time of the 1880 census, 40 year old widow Augusta Bosold lived in the village of Fulda, Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with her chilren John (20), Catherine (19), Elizabeth (16), Ferdinand (14) and Leonard (12). All of the children attended school. Although Augusta had been widowed for ten years, no occupation is listed for anyone in the household. Adjacent housholds in the census belonged to R.J. Brahmall and wodow Eva Kluber. Augusta's uncle, Magnus Hohman lived and worked on the Bramhall farm.

On 21 Sep 1882, the following article appeared in the Caldwell Citizens' Press newspaper:
Mrs. Bisold sued Mrs. Schad for breach of the peace. The trial came off
last Saturday before John Hill. Mrs. Schad was fined. I mention this fact
for the purpose to deter my German friends from breaking the peace with
their neighbors, for if such things come to my attention, they shall be
published, even if it makes them angry. Let us have peace with everyone.

The Mrs. Bosold is Augusta Hohman Bosold, but it is not known who Mrs. Schad (Schott) is, as there were several adult Mrs. Schotts in Fulda in 1882.

By 1886, Augusta Hohman Bosold owned a hotel in Fulda.

An article in the Caldwell OH newspaper dated 12 Jan 1888 stated:
Mrs. Bosold is visting her son who is very ill at Wheeling W.Va.
The son is believed to be Ferdinand.

A note in the Caldwell paper dated 13 Apr 1893 states:
Mrs. Augusta Bosold fell off her six feet high stone steps and broke her
arm and received several bruises.

On 16 Jun 1896, the newspaper reported that Mrs. Bosold was on the "Sick List."

In 1900, 60 year old widow Augusta Bosold (surname is almost illegible on census) lived on a farm that she owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with her 33 year old unmarried daughter, Catherine. Also living with them was a 56 year old boarder, unmarried farmer William Moran. Augusta came to America in 1844, when she was about 5 years old. She spoke English, but could not read or write. The census does not indicate how many children she had, or how many were still living.

Catharina Bosold

A note in the Caldwell, Ohio newspaper dated 12 Jan 1893 stated:

Dimmerling, and Katie Bosold mad a trip to Buffalo [Guernsey Co.,
OH] Saturday.

Catharina Bosold never married. In 1900, she lived on the farm of her 60 year old widowed mother, Augusta Bosold (surname is almost illegible on census) in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Also living with them was a 56 year old boarder, unmarried farmer William Moran. At the time of the 1910 census, Catherine lived with the family of her brother John M. Bosold.

According to her death certificate, 48 year old Katherine Bosold worked in the hotel business in Macksburg [Washington County], Ohio.
