Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Lester Coburger

In 1910, Lester Cobarger (30) and his wife of 8 years, Francis (26) rented an apartment at 409 Bergen St. in Newark, NJ. Their two children, Beatrice (6) and William (5) lived with them. Both children attended school, which was unusual at that time. (Children did not generally start school until they were about 7.) Lester was a self-employed "private officer" in a "private" field according to the census. Frances Cope Coburger's widowed mother lived nearby.

On Sept. 12, 1918, Lester Coburger (age 37) of 409 Bergen Ave. in Newark filled out a US military draft registration card in Newark, NJ. Lester worked at a cook at 4 Union Ave. in Livingston, Essex County, NJ. The name of the business is illegible. His nearest relative is listed as Frances Coburger of 409 Bergen Ave. Lester was described as being of medium height and build with dark hair and dark eyes.

In 1920, Lester Coburger (40) and his wife Frances (37) rented part of a multi-family dwelling at 409 Bergen St. Living with them were their children Beatrice (16), William (15) and Lester (8). All of the children attended school. Frances' birthplace and that of her father and mother were correctly identified (NJ, NY, and France, respectively); but Lester's parents' birthplace was given only as "U.S." Lester was self-employed in the field of real estate. Frances' sisters Anna Gothie and Josephine Halligan and her brother Charles Cope lived nearby.

At the time of the 1930 census, Lester (49) and Frances (47) Coburger rented an apartment for $28 a month in a predominantly Polish neighborhood at 409 Bergen St. in Newark. Living with them was their son Lester Jr. (18), who did not attend school. Lester Sr. stated that his parents were born in Austria. Frances indicated that her father was born in France and her mother was a native of New York. (In reality, their birthplaces were reversed.) Lester Sr. was a real estate broker. Lester Jr. worked as a retail grocery clerk. The Coburgers did not own a radio set. Frances Cope Coburger's sister Josephine Cope Halligan lived next door.

Records of St. Peter's RC Church, Newark, NJ show Francis Pauline Kop child of John Kop and Rosalie Fagant born 18 Jan 1883, baptized on 21 Jan 1883 by Gottfried Prieth. Sponsors Ludwig Fagant and Leopoldine Miller.

In 1900, Frances Cope (17) lived with her parents, siblings, and maternal grandparents in a two-family home at 41 Sixteenth St. in Newark, NJ. She worked as a cutlery polisher.
