1910 census indicates that Mary came to America in 1908, five years after her daughter, Mary Sholder Uglay. Mary was a widow in 1910. She spoke German, and was able to read but not write. Mary lived with her daughter and son-in-law at 437 15th Ave., Newark at the time of the census. She had given birth to three children, all of whom were alive in 1910.
Mary Scholder was blind; her eyes caused her discomfort, and she sometimes scratched at them. Her granddaughter Lillian Uglay Craft remembers that when she was about 5 years old, she used to stay with her "little granny" while Mary Shoulder Uglay worked. Lillian used to take Granny for walks so that she could feel the sun on her face. Lillian thinks granny died when she was about five years old (c. 1918). Death records and local cemetery records searched from 1916 to 1923 have not revealed any record of her death.
1910 US Census entry indicates that the subject's mother (Mary Scholder) had
3 children, all of whom were still living at the time of the census.
