Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Robert John Miller

In 1920, 17 year old Robert Miller lived with his parents and siblings in the family home on Second St. in North Braddock. He worked as a stenographer for a wholesale grocer.

At the time of the 1930 census, Robert Miller (27) rented a house at 124 N. 20th St. in Wheeling, WV for $30 a month. He lived there with his wife, Ann (25), and children John (3 yrs 6 mos) and Mary Margaret (1). Robert was a clerk for Wheeling Steel. The Miller family owned a radio set.

Robert worked for Hazel Atlas, a glass company outside Wheeling, and got his brother Fran a job there.

William Joseph Miller

In 1930, William J. Miller (24) owned a two-family house at 422 Hawkins Ave. in North Braddock, Allegheny County Pennsylvania. He lived there with his wife, Dorothy (27) and son William Jr. (10 mos.?). William Miller was employed as a bank clerk. He and Dorothy were married when they were 22 and 24 years old, respectively. The Miller family owned a radio set. Renting the other portion of William Miller's house was the family of Pennsylvania native Carl E. Brown (24).

The census taker in 1930 indicated that William's parents were born in Pennsylvania and Dorothy's parents were natives of Ohio. Since William's parents are known to have been born in Ohio, there are two possible explanations for this error: 1) The census taker spoke with Dorothy, who did not know where her in-laws were born and guessed incorrectly, or 2) The census taker transposed the information on Dorothy and William's parents' birth.
