John Carl Schockling

The 1850, 1870, and 1880 census entries for John Shockling state that he was born in Pennsylvania.

John and Caroline lived and died in their two story log house on the Schockling land in Enoch Township, Noble County, Ohio. The house was built by John and his father, who lived in a small house on the same parcel of land.

According to the US census in 1860, 30 year old farmer John Shockling lived in Enoch Twp. with his 25 year old wife Caroline and their youngest son Sebastian (1). According to the census, John and his wife were born in Hesse (Germany). John's farm was located next to that of his parents in the census.

At the time of the 1870 census, John Schockling still lived in Enoch Twp. next door to his father Matthias, who was infirm. Matthias may have transferred his farm to his son, since Matthias did not own any real estate in 1870. With John lived his wife Caroline (32) and sons Sebastian (10), Jacob (8), and Augustine (6). Sebastian and Jacob attended school. John's farm was worth $4600 and his personal estate was valued at $680. Adjacent households in the census were those of John's father and George Gibson, the mail carrier.

In 1880, John C. Schockling (50) and his wife Caroline (42) lived in Enoch Twp. with their three youngest sons: Sebastian (20), Jacob (18), and August (16). According to the census, none of the boys attended school. Also living in the house were John's aged parents, Matthias (92) and Ann Mary (90) Schockling. Neighboring households in the census were those of Henry Miller and Leonard Hill.

Researcher Dennis Witsberger and the 1880 census give John's middle initial as "C." Delores Snider has it as "E."

John Schockling died at age 54 of complications of pyles (hemmroids). There was no treatment or cure for pyles at that time.

According to researcher Roger Schockling, John had no will, so Caroline and their sons jointly became owners of the farm. Sebast (who was already married at the time of his father's death) had moved to an adjoining farm. He bought 22 acres which bordered his own farm that his father had purchased from a Mr. Lindsey in 1883.

Brothers Jacob and August Schockling both wanted the home place. Details are not known, but a settlement was made in February 1885. August purchased the 42 acre plot that his father bought in 1855 from William Fogle. Jacob bought out the orignal Schockling land, now 88 acres.

Carolina Warner

The 1860 census says Caroline was born in Hesse, but the 1850 and 1870 census entries state that she was born in Pennsylvania. In 1870 she was able to read but not write.

According to researcher Roger Schockling, Caroline lived with her son Jacob in the house built by her husband and father-in-law until her death in 1907. However, she does not appear with the family in the 1900 census.

Joseph Adam Schockling

Joseph Adam Schockling did not appear with the family in the 1860 census. He would have been five years old. He is presumed to have died before that time.

John Peter Schockling

John Peter Schockling did not appear with the family in the 1860 census. He would have been two years old. He is presumed to have died before that time.

Walter Andrew Rohrig

Alternate spelling: Roehrig.

On June 5, 1917, Walter Andrew Rohrig (22 - DOB June 20, 1894) registered for the military draft. He lived in Canton, Ohio (street name can not be made out) and his nearest relatives were his parents. Walter worked as a rubber worker for Gordan Rubber Co. in Canton. His physical description is given as tall and stout with blue eyes and light hair.

Early in the morning of January 22, 1920, the US census taker visited the Rohrig farm in Olive Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He listed Walter (25) and his wife Elizabeth (24). Their three-week old son Elmer was not listed because the census asked "Who lived in this household on January 1, 1920?" Elmer was born two days too late to be included in the 1920 census. Neighboring households in the census were those of Charles Ogle and Charles Wells.

In 1930, 36 year old farmer Walter A. Rohrig lived with his wife Elizabeth (34) on a farm they owned (value $400) in Enoch Twp., Noble co., Ohio. Based on census data, they had been married for about 12 years. Living with them were their children Elmer (10), Irene (9), Andrew (6), Marcella (4 yrs 7 mos), Ralph (2 yrs 3 mos), and James (8 mos). The 3 older children attended school. All members of the household were born in Ohio as were Walter's and Elizabeths's parents. Living on neighboring farms were the William Hill and Clark Blackstone families.
