Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

John A. Rohrig

In 1870, 20 year old day laborer John Roarch appears in the home of 74 year old Andrew Harpst in Enoch Twp. Noble County, Ohio with his wife Beata (68). Also enumerated in the household in 1870 were the Herbst's granddaughter, Katherine Shafer (7). John Roarch was born in Ohio; his parents were foreign-born. There is a cross (+) to the left of the names of John Roarch and Katherine Shafer. A note at the bottom of the census page states "belongs to Family 127." Family 127 is Andrew's son John Herbst. It's not entirely clear what the census-taker meant. Clearly, Katherine Shafer is not a member of John Herbst's immediate family... she is his wife's niece. Perhaps Katherine Schafer and John Roarch lived in the household of John Herbst, but the census-taker forgot to include them, then started to enumerate the next household (Andrew Herbst) after which he added the names of Katherine Shafer and John Roarch. John Roarch is believed to be Barbara Roehrig Herbst's younger brother.

At the time of the 1880 census, 29 year old farmer John Rohrig lived in the Village of Fulda, Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Mary (23) and children Rachel (2) and Albert (1). Also living in the house were two unmarried boarders: wagon maker William Johanning (21) and clerk George Neptune (30). Adjacent households in the census were those of mercant Gustav Ehrlman and the parish priest, D. G. Kluber.

In 1900, 49 year old John Rohrek lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 43 year old wife Mary and seven of their nine children: Albert (20), Catherine (17), Leo (15), Anna (12), Bede (10), Walter (5), and Sylvia (3).

By 1910, only two of the Roehrig children lived at home with John (59) and Mary (52). They were Andrew W. (14) and Maggie S. (13). Only Maggie attended school. The census states that eight of the couple's nine children were still living in 1910. (The deceased child was Regina, who died in 1907 at the age of 29.) Adjacent farms in the census belonged to the Roehrig's son Albert, and Henry Schell.

In 1920, J. A. and Mary Rohrig still lived on the farm in Enoch Twp. Of their children, only Leo (35) lived with them. John's occupation was self-employed broom maker. Neighboring households in the census were those of Joseph Ruppel and widow Rosa Schell.

In 1910, four of the Rohrig siblings -- Rose (28), Catherine (27), Leo (25) and Beda (20) -- lived with their widowed brother-in-law, Elijah Conkell, in Green Twp., Wayne County, Ohio. Leo and Beda were employed as laborers at the pump works.

At the time of the 1920 census, Rose Rohrig (32) owned a home at 207 15th St. S.E. in Canton, Ohio. Living with her were her unmarried sisters Catherine (29) and Anna (23). (Note the change in the ages -- or, rather, the lack thereof -- of the older two sisters from the ages given in the 1910 census.) According to the census, Rose ran a boarding house. This may have been located elsewhere, since no one lived with the Rohrig sisters. The two younger sisters worked in an enameling plant.

In 1930, 48 year old Rose Rohrig's home at 207 15th St. S.E. was valued at $3000. She there lived with her unmarried sisters Catherine (47) and Anna Rohrig (42), and their widowed mother, Mary (72). Rose and Catherine were employed as wrappers in an enameling shop. Anna and their mother did not work outside the home. The adjacent home in the census belonged to fellow Fulda native Edward Brahler and his family. (The Brahlers didn't live there at the time of the 1920 census.)

Leo L. Roehrig

Twenty-five year old Leo Roehrig did not live with his parents at the time of the 1910 census. In 1920, Leo (35) lived on his parents' farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Leo worked as a coal miner. Leo is listed as being married, but there is no wife listed in the household. There is a notation in Leo's column that reads "BWF." The meaning of the notation (which is found immedately following his marital status) is not clear.

Anna Rohrig

In 1910, 27 year old Regina Hupp and her first cousin Anna Rohrig (22) were boarders in a home in the Fifth Ward of Canton, Ohio. Both women worked in a factory as wrappers. The household and family numbers in the census are crossed out, and the remaining household and family numbers on the page do not run consecutively.

Miss Anna Rohrig lived in Caldwell in 1955, according to the obituary of her brother, Albert.

Beda Roehrig

According to his niece, Elenora Roehrig Riski, Beda Roehrig "up and left Fulda one day in the early 1900s, without informing anyone where he was going or why. Some time later the Roehrigs in Fulda received a letter from him asking about his inheritance from his parents, John and Mary Roehrig. The letter was postmarked from somewhere in Iowa."

Despite an extensive search (including Soundex variants), no record of Beda Roehrig has been found in the 1920 or 1930 census. He is not listed as a surviving sibling in the 1955 obituary of his brother, Albert.
