Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

John Joseph Crum

The home place of John and Agnes Crum was a half mile beyond the Olive Hill toward Fulda.

In the early 1920s, John Crum was told by a doctor in Stark County that he had an "enlarged spleen." (His daughter Leona thinks that "enlarged spleen" was a euphemism for cancer.) He was sent to Mt. Carmel in Columbus for an operation. Doctors advised him that even with the operation, he would likely live for only a year or so. Their prediction proved to be correct.

John Crum's death certificate states that the primary cause of death was "lobar pneumonia, also central." Contributing factors were pericarditis and "spleen (illeg.)" The illegible word looks something like "musovial."

The Crums lived on a farm about eight miles from Caldwell... it was actually closer to Middleburg than Caldwell.

In 1900, 34 year old farmer Leo Crum lived on a farm that he owned in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 32 year old wife Elizabeth and four sons: Frank (12), John (10), Theodore (7), and Roy (9 mos). Leo was born in Ohio to German-born parents.

Living in Middleburg, Ohio in 1933, according to the obituary of his sister-in-law, Margaret Yeagle Schott.

Shortly before he died, Leo Crum said to his wife, "Lise, you're going to follow me shortly." His words proved to be prophetic; Elizabeth Yeagle Crum died less than six months after her husband.

Leo Crum's death certificate lists "senile asthenia" as a contributing factor in his death. Asthenia is a medical term denoiting physical weakness and loss of strength.
