Sylvester Yeagle

On June 22, 1853, 19 year old farmer Sylvester Tokel arrived at the port of Baltimore having sailed from the port of Bremen aboard the ship Admiral. In 1860, 20 year old Hessian-born farmer "Sebastian Eagler" lived in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 22 year old wife Mary, and their two children John (2) and Matilda (1). The Yeagle's neighbors in the census were the farms of Joseph Michel and John Kress.

In 1870, 34 year old farmer Sylvester Yagle lived with his wife, Mary (31), and children Matilda (9), Margaret (7), Katharina (6), John (4), Elizabeth (2) and Rosina (1 mo.) in Stock Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. The value of Sylvester's real estatate was $4000 and his personal estate was $1341. Matilda and Margaret attended school. Sylvester was born in Hess Cassel and the rest of the household in Ohio.

At the time of the 1900 census, 66 year old farmer Sylvester Yeagle lived on a farm that he owned in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 41 year old second wife, Theresa, and their two children Anna (12) and Ignatius (10).. Also in the household were Sylvester's youngest child from his first marriage, Joseph (20) and Theresa's 18 year old son William. Sylvester Yeagle was born in Germany and came to America in 1853. He was a naturalized citizen. Adjacent farms in the census were those of Andrew Warner and Frank Crum.

In 1910, 75 year old Sylvester Yagle lived in Noble County, Ohio with his second wife Tresy (50) and their two children, Anna and Ignos. None of the children of Syslvester's first marriage lived with them.

In 1920, Sylvester (86) and Teresa (61) Yeagle lived in the home of their son, Ignatz in Stock Township, Noble County, Ohio. The census indicates that Teresa could read and write, but Sylvester could not.

Sylvester was well known for his moonshine.

He was born in Germany, in the year of 1833, and departed
this life Aug. 10th, 1922; he was eighty nine years 7 months and
14 days.
He sailed to America in the year of 1853 at the age of 20 years.
He first made his home in Wheeling, W. Va., and later moved to
Fulda where he spent the remainder of his life as a farmer. His
Many friends will mourn to learn of Mr. Yeagles death. He has now
gone from us but will never be forgotten. He was always a kind
husband and a loving Father.


Theresa Schafer

1) Theresa Schafer is not listed as the daughter of any of the other five John Schafers "St. Mary's-- 150 Years," (pg 188 - 192).
2) Although Theresa Schafer has a son, William, at the time of her marriage to Sylvester Yeagle; St. Mary's does not have a record of a previous marriage.

According to the census, all three of Theresa's children were living in 1900. Theresa was born in Germany and came to America in 1882. She could read and write English.

Theresa Schafer Yeagle's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on June 15, 1943.
MRS. SYLVESTER YEAGLE
SUMMERFIELD -- Mrs. Sylvester Yeagle, 84, died Monday. She
broke her hip about 10 months ago and had been in Good Samaritan
hospital, until recently.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock,
at Fulda St. Mary's church with Rev. Fr. Mattes officiating.
Surviving are three children, Ignatz of the home, William, of Canton,
and Mrs. Ina Anthony, of Pittsburgh.


Fred Charles Strahl

Fred Strahl has not been found in the 1910 census. The rest of his family was found in Peoria, Illinois in the household of Rose's sister, Agnes Weidenweber. The family consisted of "Freda" Strahl (25) and children Frederick (1 yr 10 mos.) and Harry (1 mo.). Freda was a native of Ohio, as were her parents. The boys were both born in Illinois. According to the census, Freda had been married for two years. She had given birth to two children, both of whom were still living. Although the census recorded that she was married, her husband was not enumerated in the household. She was not employed.

On 12 Sep 1918, 35 year old Fred Charles Strall of 461 E. Cherry, Wabeka, Iroquios Co., Illinois registered for the US military draft. He stated that he was born Aug 16 1883. Fred's worked as a storekeeper fo rhte Talbot Wood Motor Co. at the corner of Oak & 3rd in Wabeka. He stated that his heared relative was Rose S. Strall. Fred was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, Fred C. Strahl (36) rented a home in Middleport, Iroquois County, Illinois. Living with him were his wife Rose S. (35) and children Fred C. Jr. (11), Harry S. (9), Mary R. (8), Jo. J. (6), and Gertrude (3). All of the children except Gertrude attended school. Fred and Rose were natives of Ohio, as were their parents; the children were all born in Illinois. Fred was employed as the manager of a garage.

In 1930, Fred C. Strahl (46) owned a home worth $2000 in Concord, Iroquois Co., IL. Other members of the household were his wife Rose S. (45), and children Fred C. Jr. (21), Harry S. (19), Rosemary (18), Joe J. (16) and Gertrude (13). All of the children except Fred Jr. attended school. Fred Sr. was a commercial salesman.


Gertrude Strahl

Dates of birth and death (form Social Security Death Index) have not been proven.


Roman M. Singer

Roman Singer has not been found in the 1910 census index.

At the time of the 1920 census, Roman Singer (34) and his 29 year old wife Verenia (?) rented a home at 844 Syale (?) Street in Pittsburgh's 25th Ward. Living with them were Roman's father and mother in-law John (83) and Mary (69) Tate. Also living in the home was 10 year old Raymond Tate, who was identified as Roman's "nephew-in-law." Raymond attended school. Roman was the only member of the household who was employed... he worked as a millwright. According to the census, Roman and his parents were natives of Ohio.

By 1930, the couple had moved to Oceanside, San Diego County, California. Roman (42) and Usenia (39) rented a residence on Tamerack St. for $20 a month. Roman was employed as a ranch hand. Judging by the occupations of his neighbors, most of the area was devoted to avocado farming. The couple owned a radio set.

Roman and Usenia Singer did not have any children.


William Frederick Heyl

At the time of the 1910 census, 22 year old William Heyl and his wife Elizabeth (23) lived with William's father, Martin Heyl (61) and Martin's second wife, Vencentia Heyl (51). The house was located at 5 Carrie Street in Pittsburgh's 25th Ward. William and Elizabeth's daughters, Loretta (1 yr, 9 mos) and Alice (2 mos) also lived in the household. William was employed as an upholsterer in a repair store. He and Elizabeth had been married for two years.

On Jun 5, 1917, 29 year old William Frederick Heyl filled out a US military draft registration card. He gave his address as 18 Gashorn (?) St. in Pittsburgh. William said that he had been born in Pittsburgh on Feb. 14, 1888. He was an upolsterer at Hagmaier Bros. at 712 East North Ave. in Pittsburgh. William stated that he was the sole support for his wife and three children under the age of 12. He was described as being of medium height and build, with gray eyes and black hair.

In 1920, William F. Heyl (31) and his wife Elizabeth (32) rented lodgings at 82 Warren St. in Pittsburgh's 25th Ward. They lived with their children, Loretta E. (11), Alice I. (10) and William C. (5 ? -- difficult to read age). The two girls attended school. Everyone in the household was born in Pennsylvania except Elizabeth. William's father was a native of Pennsylvania; his mother was from Switzerland. William worked as a shop laborer.

By 1930, the Heyls owned the $3000 home at 82 Warren St. in Pittsburgh. Living there were William F. Heyl (42), his wife Elizabeth (42), and their children Loretta (21), Alice (19), William (17), Richard (9), Mary (5), Dolores (3 yrs 0 mos), and Lawrence (1 yr 7 mos). Only William and Richard attended school. William worked as an upholsterer for a furniture company. The family owned a radio set. Note that there is an unusually long gap between the births of 17 year old William and Richard (eight years). The reason for this gap is unknown. Possible explanations include children who died before 1930, illness of either of the parents, or temporary absence or estrangement of one of the parents.

In 1942, 54 year old William was required to fill out a military draft registration card, which indicated that his address was 1938 Warren St., N.S. Pittsburgh, Pa. He was employed by Jos. Horne Co. at Shore and Galveston St. in Pittsburgh. In answer to the question "Name and address of person who will always know your address," William replied Mrs. Eliz. Heyl, 1938 Warren St., Pgh, Pa. William did not have a telephone number.


Alice I. Heyl

At the time of the 1930 census, 19 year old Alice Heyl was enumerated with her parents and siblings at 82 Warren St. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, her name is written down as "Alice - Ab." None of her siblings had any notations (or middle initials) next to their names. It is not know if "Ab." means "absent", i.e., Alice was living elsewhere. She worked as a teacher at a parochial school.

Alice Heyl joined a convent and took the name Sr. M. Laurentia, OSB


Richard Heyl

Richard Heyl was killed in England in World War II at the age of 23.


Charles Joseph Weidenweber

In 1910, newlyweds Charlie (26) and Agnes M. (22) Weidenweber rented an apartment at 220 Second St. in Peoria, Illinois. Also living in the home was Agnes's sister, "Freda" Strahl (25), and her two young sons, Frederick and Harry. Freda's name was really Agnes. It is not known why she is referred to as Freda in the census. Her husband was not enumerated in the household. Charles Weidenweber was employed as a helper in a marble works.

On 12 Sep 1918, 34 year old carpenter Charles Joseph Weidenweber of 1401 Madison Ave., Pittsburgh registered for the US military draft. He stated that his birth date was April 1, 1884. Charles worked for the Dravoe Const. Co. in Nevile Island, Allegheny Co., Pa. His next of kin was his wife, Agnes Weidenweber. Charles was described as being a tall man of medium build with brown eyes and dark hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, the family rented a home at 2223 East St. in Pittsburgh. The household consisted of Charles Weidenweber (34), his wife Agnes (31), and children Dale (9 yrs 5 mos), John (5 yrs 11 mos) and Ida (3 yrs 8 mos). Both boys attended school. According to the census, Charles, Dale and Ida were natives of Pennsylvania. John was born in Illinois. The census taker initially wrote "Penn" as Agnes' birthplace, but crossed it out and wrote Ohio. Charles worked as a house carpenter. The family's surname was misspelled "Weidenweba" in the census index.

In 1930, Charles J. Weidenweber (46) and his wife Agnes M. (42), rented a house for $33 amonth at 2323 East ST. in Pittsburgh. Living with them were their children Dale O. (19), John C. (17), and Ida A. (15). Only Ida attended school. Charles and Ida were born in Pennsylvania, Agnes was a native of Ohio, and Dale and John were born in Illinois. According to the census, Charles and Agnes were married about 1908. Charles worked as a carpenter building houses; Dale was a truck helper at a wholesale grocery, and John was a clerk at a paint manufacturer.

Charles J. Weidenweber, age 58, of 2720 California Ave., Pittsburgh, registered for the US military draft a second time on 27 Apr 1942. He stated that he was born on Apr 1, 1884 in Pittsburgh, and he identified Mrs. Agnes Weidenweber of the same address as a person who would always know his whereabouts. Charles worked for Michael Pontarillis & Sons in Glen Hazel Heights. Charles was described as being 6'2", 200 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.


Oscar Adolph Helbling

On 12 Sep 1918, 32 year old Oscar Adolph Helbling of 3210 East. St., Pittsburg (sic), Pa. registered for the US military draft. He stated that he was born Oct. 28, 1885. His wife, Mrs. Ida Marie Helbling of the same address was listed as his next of kin. Oscar worked as a machinist at the Westinghouse Machine Co. in Garrison Alley, Pittsburgh, Pa. Oscar was described as being of medium height and stout build, with brown eyes and brown hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, Oscar A. Helbling (34) rented a home at 3210 East St. in Pttsburgh, Pa. Living with him were his wife Ida (30), and children Harold (8 yrs 7 mos), Emil (7 yrs 4 mos), Wilbert (5 yrs 8 mos), Mildred (4 yrs 1 mo) Howard (2 yrs 6 mos) and Ralph (2 mos). The oldest three children attended school. Oscar worked as a laborer at a piano store. Living next door to the Helblings was Ida's parents and siblings, John and Theresa Singer.

In 1930, the Helbling family rented a home on Mt. Troy Rd. in Ross Twp. Allegheny County, PA. Members of the household were Oscar A. (44) and his wife Ida M. (40), and their 13 children: Harold W. (18), Emil O. (17), Wilbert C. (15), Mildred C. (14), Howard J. (12), Ralph R. (10), Eleanor M. (8), Oscar F. (6), Dorothy M. (5), Lawrence O. (4 yrs 5 mos), Ida C. (3), Mary P. (1 yr 10 mos), and Bertha A. (7 mos). Wilbert, Mildred, Howard, Ralph Eleanor and Oscar attended school. Oscar worked as a helper on a piano truck. Everyone in the home was a native of Pennsylvania except Ida, who was from Ohio. Oscar's parents were German.

On 27 Apr 1942, 56 year old Oscar Adolph Helbling of 28 Royal St. (no town listed), Allegheny County, Pa registered again for the US military draft. His wife, Ida, of the same address was listed a the "person who would always know his whereabouts." Oscar worked for the Owens Illinois Can Co. in McKees Rocks. He stated that he was born in Pittsburgh on 10-28-1885. Oscar was 5'6", 150 lbs. with hazel eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion.


Ida Ottilia Singer

In 1910, 19 year old Ida Singer lived with her parents and younger siblings in the family's rented home at 1918 Howard St. in Pittsburgh. Ida worked as a sorter in a cork factory.


Ralph R. Helbling

Ralph Helbling enlisted in the armed forces on 27 Oct 1941, one week after his older brother Harold. Ralph drowned in Ireland during World War II. He never married.


Bernice Helbling

According to researcher Tom Singer, Bernice Helbling died at age 2. He did not have dates of birth or death.


Henry Clarence Singer

In 1910, 18 year old Clarence Singer lived with his parents and younger siblings in Pittsburgh, PA. He was employed as a laborer in a hook factory.

At the time of the 1920 census, Clarence Singer (28) and his wife Esther (25) rented part of a residence in Pittsburgh's 26th Ward. Living with them was their daughter, Esther (1 yr 6 mos). Clarence and his parents were from Ohio. Esther and her parents were born in Pennsylvania. The house was owned by 46 year old widower Henry Schreck (?) and his daughter Florence (10), who also lived there. Clarence worked as a laborer on the railroad. He was a veteran of World War I.
