Joseph William Brister

In 1920, Joseph W. Brister (56) owned a farm in Seneca Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio, where he lived with his wife, Tillie L. (53), widowed father John (85), and the family of his married daughter, Etta W. Yontz (20), her husband Fred Yontz (23), and their son , Harry E. (11 mos.).

The following note appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 17 Sep 1926
DINNER PARTY
Mr. and Mrs. Will Brister entertained with a two-course
dinner on Tuesday evening. Covers were laid for Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Yontz and son Harry and daughter Dorothy and
Mrs. Joe Brister and the host and hostess. They after dinner
hours were spent socially.


Matilda L. Baker

Matilda Baker did not appear in the 1870 census with her family. She would have been about 4 years old at the time.

The obituary of Matilda Brister appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 3 Apr 1940:
MRS. JOSEPH BRISTER DIES AT CALDWELL
CALDWELL - Mrs. Matilda Watson Brister, 74, native of Lewisville,
Monroe county, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred
Yontz, Belford street, following a lingering illness. She had made her
home in Caldwell for the past 13 years.
Mrs. Brister was a daughter of Mark and Elizabeth Baker. She
married Joseph Brister who survives with the one daughter, Mrs. Yontz
and three grandchildren, Harry, Dorothy and Joseph Yontz, all of Cald-
well. Two brothers also survive.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the home on
Belford street. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, near Caldwell.

Her obituary uses the name "Matilda Watson Brister." The origin of the name "Watson" is not known.

John Brister

The Ogden families lived at Brister Station just a short distance past Burkhart in Summit Twp, Monroe Co, OH. John Brister operated a saw mill where his brother James worked. James also had a small store and operated the Post Office at Brister.

Marx Baker

At the time of the 1850 census, 32 year old German Mark Baker was a farm laborer in the household of Ohio native High Dillon in Center Twp. Monroe County, Ohio. Elizabeth Sebaugh lived a few households away. Other Baker famiies lived nearby, but the relationship between them and Mark Baker is not known.

In 1860, Marx Baker (40) owned a farm worth $2000 in Summit Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio. Other members of the household were Elisabeth (26), Lewis (8), Anna M. (5), George (3) and John (4 mos). The family's possessions were worth $630. Marx was a native of Bavaria; Elisabeth was from Pennsylvania, and the children were born in Ohio. A number of Sebaugh households were listed on the same page in the census.

At the time of the 1870 census, the Baker family lived in Summit Twp. Members of the household were Markus Baker (52), Elisabeth (37), Louis (17), Mary (13), George (11), John (6), Jacob (4), and Anne (1). Markus and Elisabeth were from Bavaria and Pennsylvania, respecitvely; the children were all born in Ohio. The Baker farm was valued at $2700; their personal possessions were worth $750. Neighboring farms in the census were those of Bavarians Jacob Baker (62) and Michael Baker (65).

In 1880, farmer Marx Baker (61) lived in Summit Twp. with his wife, Elizabeth (46) and children George (21), Mary (24), John (19), Jacob (16) Matilda (14), William (8), and Laura (5). William was a native of Germany; Elizabeth was born in Pennsylvania to German parents. The children were all from Ohio. The youngest five children attended school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Jacob Baker (73) and Frank Biedenbach. A farmer named Louis Sebaugh lived nearby. The relationship between these families is not known at this time.

Stone 157, row 12 - Elizabeth, wife of Marx Baker died 12 Sept 1901 aged 67 y, 5 m, 13 ds - Note: Elizabeth Seebach Baker born 27 Nov.1833 in Pittsburgh, PA daughter of Jacob and Catharine Bott Seebach -spouse of Marx Baker or Becker.


Anne Baker

Anne Baker did not appear in the 1880 census with her family. She may have died before that time. She would have been about 11 years old in 1880.


Sarah Grace Davis

Sarah Grace Davis, infant daughter of Brian and Mary Ann Crum Davis of Cumberland, Ohio, was stillborn Sunday, January 29, 2006, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, Ohio. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Ray and Karen Crum of Caldwell; her paternal grandparents, Jerry and Connie Davis of Cumberland; great-grandparents Virginia Crum of Summerfield, Dale and Jean Augenstein of Lowell and Charles Johnson of Norwich; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Caldwell with Father Dale Tornes officiating.


Norbert Tornes

Norbert W. Tornes, Sr., age 95, died after a brief illness
on Monday, February 13, 2006 at Memorial Hospital in
Colorado Springs, CO.
Born November 25, 1910 in Lowell, Ohio to the late
Lawrence and Anna Tornes. Leadman and Supervisor in
the Shipping department at Rockwell International where
he retired in 1976 after 28 years. A World War II veteran
who was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in various
countries in the European theater. Longtime member of
Saint Mary Catholic Church, Marietta and Usher at Holy
Spirit Catholic Church, Columbus for over 30 years. Former
Knight of Columbus.
Survived by his daughters, Linda Marie Tornes of Colum-
bus and Mary Lou Tornes of New York, NY; son, Norbert W.
Tornes Jr. and daughter-in-law, Linda J. Tornes of Colorado
Springs, CO; grandchildren, Caitlin E. Tornes, Kevin N.
Tornes, and Molly K. Tornes; sister, Mrs. Veronica Offenber-
ger of Marietta, Ohio; many nieces and nephews. Preceded
in death by his loving wife of 53 years Mary Frances Tornes
(Harsh). Also preceded in death by brothers Walter and Ralph
and sisters Helen and Mildred.
