James J. Hill

James J. Hill's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on April 25, 1973 James J. Hill, 58, of Caldwell, co-owner of Hill's General Store in Caldwell, died at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday in Good Samaritan Medical Center following a long illness. He was born Nov. 30, 1914, in Caldwell, a son of William and Philomena Ruppel Hill. Surviving are his widow, Dorothy Hartley Hill; a son, James H. of Columbus; two daughters, Mrs. Sally Robinson of Marietta and Mrs. Joy [Joey] Paugh of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Lyons of Warner Robbins, Ga. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at McVay Funeral Home in Caldwell where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Fr. Lawrence Luciana in charge. Burial will be in Olive Cemetery at Caldwell.


Dorothy Lynette Hartley

March 2. -- Miss Dorothy Hartley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hartley of Caldwell Rt. 5, and James Hill, son of William Hill, Sr. of Main street, Caldwell were married Wednesday in the parsonage of St. Philomena church with Rev. Fr. Preston officiating. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hartley and Mr. and Mrs. William Hill, Jr. Immediately following the ceremony the bride and groom left for a short wedding trip. Mrs. Hill is a graduate of Caldwell high school and a member of the First M.E. church. She was employed following her graduation with Harry Briggs in the liquidation of two Caldwell banks and at present is employed in the office of the Permian Oil & Gas company on Main street. Mr. Hill graduated from the Caldwell high school and attended Ohio State university. He is affiliated with his father in the Hill general store on Main street. Upon their return Mr. and Mrs. Hill will reside in Caldwell.


Sally L.. Hill

Sally L. Robinson's obituary appeared in The Marietta (OH) Times newspaper on March 11, 2005

Sally Louise Robinson, 64, of The Villages, Fla., died Thursday morning, March 10, 2005, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 9, 1941, in Marietta, a daughter of Dorothy Lynette Hartley Hill of Caldwell, Ohio, and the late James Joseph Hill. She attended Caldwell High School until her senior year and graduated from Belpre High School. She graduated top of her class from Glenville State College with a B.A. in English. She had worked for a number of years as a real estate agent and retired from Home Connections Realtors in Williamstown. Mrs. Robinson was a member of First Baptist Church in Williamstown and First Baptist Church in The Villages, Fla.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Larry L. Robinson, whom she married Aug. 8, 1958; three daughters, Kelly L. (Daniel) Long of Vancleave, Miss., Sabrina L. (Daniel) Taffer of Leesburg, Va., and Renee L. (Bradley) Furr of Williamstown; one brother, James H. Hill of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; one sister, Joey McCormick of Caldwell; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three nephews.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, Caldwell, Ohio, and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Williamstown. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Ephraim Cemetery in Mt. Ephraim, Ohio.

Joey L. Hill

CALDWELL - Joey L. McCormick, 68, of Caldwell died Thursday morning (June 21, 2007) at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 22, 1939, in Zanesville, Ohio, a daughter of the late James J. and Dorothy Hartley Hill. Joey was a retired legal secretary for Pima County, Arizona; and was a member of Caldwell United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was involved in many youth activities. She also volunteered at the Caldwell Grade School Library. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sally Robinson. She is survived by two sons, David (Michelle) Paugh of Mount Morris, Pa., and Jack (Jo Beth) Paugh of Morgantown, W.Va.; three grandsons, David Robert, Mark and Kevin Paugh; three nieces; and one nephew. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at Caldwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Caldwell United Methodist Church Youth Fund, 537 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio 43724.

John Frederick Schott

The following was published in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on March 2, 1955: Pfc. John F. Schott, 22, whose wife, Rita, lives at 350 Newman street, is participating in a special army test exercise at Ft. Hood, Tex. Schott, son of Mrs. Norris Krofft, 321 Linn street, is a supply clerk with Company D of the First Armored division's 100th Tank battalion. A former salesman for the Putman Auto Parts Co., he entered the army in March 1954, and completed basic training at Ft. Knox.

GRILL HAS NEW OWNER The Westview Grill, 2332 Dresden road, had been purchased by John Schott. A grand opening of the newly purchased establishment is being held Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Free gift items are to be given to customers during this opening. John Schott is well known throughout the Zanesville area and has previously been engaged in sales work. Prior to this he had served in the armed forces with the 100th Tank Battalion at Foot Hood, Texas as a supply sergeant. He is a graduate of St. Thomas high school. Schott is married to the former Rita Rayl, has one child, Michelle, and resides at 350 Newman street.


The following appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on December 7, 1962:3 MERCHANTS ARRESTED FOR SUNDAY SALES Three Zanesville businessmen were arrested Thursday on charges of failing to comply with the Ohio Law against Sunday sales. The charges were the first filed in the city since the Nov. 6 election when voters turned down a constitutional amendment which would change the Ohio Law against Sunday sales. Arrested yesterday were John Francis Kelley, 52, of 3655 Frazeysburg road, manager of Bing's Furniture Store; John F. Schott, 30, of 2520 Geneva drive, owner of Schott's Westview Grill and Dairy Store at 2232 Dresden road; and Rex Duane Bankes, 39, of 1050 Helene drive, owner of Rex's Five Minute Car Wash at 555 Adair avenue.

The following appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on January 10, 1951: MISS CLARITA RAYL HONORED AT SHOWER Miss Clarita Rayl, bride-elect of John Schott, was honored
at a kitchen shower Monday evening at the home of Miss Joy
Lou Ryan, Forest avenue. Miss Bonnie Duemmel was co-
hostess. Cards were play (sic) with prizes going to Miss Gene
Michael, Miss Rayl, Miss Virginia Gaus, Miss Joan Berry
and Miss Mary DeVoll. The wedding will take place at 10 o'clock Saturday morning
in St. Thomas Catholic church. The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ard B. Rayl of 527 Van Horn avenue. Mr. Schott is the
son of Mrs. Florentine Schott of 1312 Linden avenue.


The following wedding announcement appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on January 14, 1951 CLARITA J. RAYLE AND JOHN SCOTT WED YESTERDAY The double ring marriage vows for Miss Clarita J. Rayl
and John F. Schott were solemnized at 10 o'clock yester-
day morning in St. Thomas Catholic church by Rev. J.F.
Beever. Arrangements of white snow chrysanthemums
and tapers burning in two seven branch candelabra added
a nuptial note to the beauty of the altar. Music for the ceremony was played at the organ by Miss
Margaret Dennis "Ave Maria," "Prayer for a Perfect Life" and
"Our Lord I Am Not Worthy" were sound by Jack Guinsier. The bride's path to the altar was covered by white aisle
cloth and satin bows marker the aisle ends of the family pews.
She walked with her father who gave her in (words missing). Her wedding gown of slipper satin was fashioned with
becoming square neckline in the close fitting, long sleeved
bodice. Two rows of Chantilly lace outlined the neck. The skirt
was panelled in front with soft shirring at the hip line and fell
into a full train. The bride's three quarter length veil was held
in place with a crown of maline trimmed with orange blossoms.
She carried a bouquet of feathered white carnations and steph-
anotis. Miss Joi Lou Ryan was maid of honor and Miss Bonnie
Duemmel and Miss Joan Berry (word missing) as brides-
maids. Miss Ryan's gown of coral satin was fashioned with high
necked basque bodice and net skirt over ruffled satin. She
carried a bouquet of variegated carnations in cascade and
wore a matching satin hat. The bridesmaids' gowns were like that of Miss Ryan. Miss
Drummel wore orchid and carried pink carnations. Their hats
matched their dresses. James Mitchell was best man for Mr. Schott and the ushers
were Paul Kinkade and Norbert Burgess. The bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Rayl of 527 Van Horn
avenue, entertained 50 guests in the YWCA at a reception follow-
ing the ceremony. When the couple left for a two week wedding trip to Florida
the bride was wearing a taupe dress topped with gray fur
trimmed coat and black accessories. She wore the corsage
from her bridal bouquet. They will be at home to freinds (sic)
at 13491/2 Maple avenue when they return. Mrs. Florentine Schott of 1312 Linden avenue entertained
with the rehearsal dinner at The Casino on Friday evening.
Out-of-town guests were entertained at a buffet supper last night
in the Rayl home. Mrs. Schott is a graduate of St. Thomas high school and is
employed at Mutual Federal Savings and Loan association. Mr.
Schott, graduate of St. Thomas high school, is employed by Put-
nam Auto Parts company.


Clarita Schott's obituary appeared in The Times recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on October 12, 1963: Mrs. John Schott, 32, of 2520 Geneva drive died at 1:40
a.m Friday in Good Samaritan Hospital where she was
admitted shortly before 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Death was due
to pneumonia. Mrs. Schott's husband owns and operates Westview Grill
at 2232 Dresden road. The former Clarita J. Rayl, she was born in Zanesville on
Aug. 27, 1931, a daughter of A.B. and Marguerite Gaab Rayl. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Schott is survived by a
daughter, Michelle Lynn, and a son John Jr, both of the home;
her parents of 527 Van Horn avenue, and a half brother, Lyle
Rayl of the U.S. Navy. A daughter, Cheryl, preceded her in death. The body is at Forest Avenue Chapel of Bolin-Byan Funeral
Home where friends may call 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. today
and Sunday.

named Cheryl Marie. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. A.B.
Rayl of 527 van Horn avenue and Mrs. Florentine Schott
of 961 Linden avenue. John Schott of Ava is the great
grandfather.

Cheryl Marie Schott's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on September 4, 1953 Cheryl Marie Schott, one-year-old daughter of Mr.. and
Mrs. John Schott of 350 Newman street died at 5:20 o'clock
this morning at Good Samaritan hospital following a short
illness. Surviving in addition to the parents are the maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Raile (sic), of 527 Van
Horn avenue, and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Floren-
tine Schott of 961 Linden avenue. The body was removed to the Forest avenue chapel of
the Mader-Peoples funeral home where friends may call
after 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Monday
morning at the chapel with burial in Mount Olive Cemetery.

The following appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on Feb. 14, 1958 PUPILS GET FREE ICE CREAM If the 835 pupils at Westview school hadn't already been told that John Frederick Schott, Jr., was born Monday in Good Samaritan hospital, they found out about the new arrival Friday afternoon over free dishes of ice cream. The baby's father, who owns and operates the Westview Grill across from the school at Dresden road and Englewood avenue, provided the children with the treat. Room mothers served the ice cream during Valentines parties held in various classrooms during the afternoon. Schott, displaying the customary pride over becoming the father of a son, said: "I didn't figure cigars were very appropriate for the kids." The Schotts have a daughter, Michelle, 15 months old. The mother and new baby were to be dismissed from the hospital later today.
