James Schaffer

At the time of the 1920 census, James J. Schafer (21) lived with his parents in a rented dwelling in Union Twp., Washington County, Pennsylvania. James worked in a coal mine.

In 1930, James Schaffer (32) lived with his wife Hilda (29) in the same dwelling as his parents in Bethel Park, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The couple had been married about a year. James worked as a laborer in the building trade, as did his brother Francis and his brother-in-law, Samuel Messner. James and his wife paid $10 a month in rent.


Samuel Messner

In 1930, Samuel Messner (33) lived with his wife Marie (29) in the same dwelling as Marie's parents in Bethel Park, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Other family members were Samuel and Marie's children, Madeline (10), Samuel (8) and Thelma (5). Everyone except Marie was a native of Pennsylvania, as were Samuel's parents. Samuel worked as a laborer in the building trade.


Lizzie R. Ullman

The obituary of Lizzie Ullman Schafer appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 11 Jan 1955:
Mrs. Lizzie R. Schafer, 66, of Marietta, mother of Mrs. Francis Josselyn of 707 Larzelere avenue, died at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Marietta Memorial hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Schafer was born Aug. 7 1888, in Washington county, the daughter of William and Caroline Kehl Ullman. On March 1, 1908, she was married to Clyde Schafer. She was a member of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed church.
Surviving in addition to her husband and daughter here are two other daughters, Mrs. L. C. Smith of Columbus and Mrs. Raymond Barth of Canton; six sons, Loren, Eugene, and Donald, all of Marietta, Garland of Cambridge, Kenneth of Canton and Sgt. Clyde Schafer Jr., serving with the Air Force in the Philippines; 16 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Daniel of Ritchey road, Walter of 536 Smithfield avenue and Charles Ullman of Watertown, and a sister, Mrs. John Mummey of 1110 Moxahala avenue.
The body was removed to the Doudna and McClure funeral home in Marietta.
