According to the census, Otelia had given birth to six children, all of whom were living.

Joseph I. Schumacher

In 1870, Bavarian-born farmer Joseph Schumacker (30) owned a farm worth $1800 in Woodsfield, Center Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Other members of the household were Elizabeth Schumaker (23), Zilla (2) and 8 year old August Koontz, who attended school. The relationship between August and the Schumacker family is not known. Everyone in the home was a native of Ohio except Joseph. Joseph's older brother George lived next door.

At the time of the 1880 census, Joseph Schumacher (41) and his wife Elizabeth (35) still lived in Center Twp. Living with them were their daughters, Barbara (9), Josephine (5) and Annie C. (4). The older two girls attended school. Joseph's brother George still lived next door.

In 1900, the Schumachers still lived in Center Twp. The household consisted of Joseph (60), his wife of 31 years, Elizabeth (55) and their daughter Annie (22). According to the census, Elizabeth had given birth to three children, all of whom were still alive in 1900. This is contradicted by the 1870 census, which states that the couple had a daughter born in 1868 who did not appear in subsequent census records. The 1900 census also stated that Joseph came to America in 1855.

The same family members lived in the household in 1910. The only significant change is that Elizabeth's place of birth is given as Pennsylvania, not Ohio as in previous census records.

Researcher Michael Schumacher states that Joseph Schumacher had three children: Cecilia (1868-1928), Josephine (1874-1930) and Anna (1876-1935). He does not have Barbara (1871-?) in the family. Since Joseph Schumacher's obituary refers to one daughter as Ceclia B., it seems likely that Cecilia and Barbara are the same person.

The obituary of Joseph I. Schumacher appeared in The Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, Thurs. Oct. 24, 1918:
Joseph I. Schumacher was born in Bavaria, Germany, on August
29, 1839. He died October 14, 1918, and was at his death 79 years,
one month and 14 days old.
He came to this country with his parents in 1854. A most remarkable
family and one no more favorable known, the family of ten Sons of the
late Joseph and Margaret Schumacher.
He was married to Elizabeth Kuntz of Miltonsburg, Ohio. To this union
were born three children: Cecilia B. and Josephine Schumacher of Pitts-
burgh, Pennsylvania and Anna Schumacher of the home.
Mr. Schumacher’s death was a shock to the community. He had been
ailing for some time. His death is the loss of a devoted and loving husband,
a kind and affectionate father, a generous and helpful brother and neighbor,
and an honest and respected citizen. His good example and noble life will
be remembered by all who knew him.
The funeral services were held at the R. C. Church of which he was a
faithful member by the Reverend Francis Seeber, Thursday morning at
9:30. He was laid to rest in the Roman Catholic cemetery by the side of his
wife who preceded him several years ago, followed by a large concourse
of relatives and friends. His six nephews acted as pallbearers.

According to the census, Lizzie had given birth to eight children, one of whom died prior to 1900. The census also stated that all of the children were born in Kentucky, a fact disputed by other census records. Everyone in the household could read and write. The reason for Lizzie's age discrepancy between the 1880 census (when she was 2 years younger than her husband) and the 1900 census (when she was 10 years younger) is not known.

At the time of the 1910 census, 65 year old widower Lewis Schumacher Sr. owned a farm in the 4th Magisterial District of Fleming Co., Kentucky. Living with him were his unmarried children Joseph (31), Mary (25), and Louis Jr. (21), as well as his married son Charles (34) and Charles' wife Margaret (31). According to the census, Louis came to America in 1853 and was a naturalized citizen. Unlike other census records, the 1910 census stated that Lewis could not read or write.

In 1920, 76 year old German-born widower Louis Schumacher lived with his unmarried son and daughter, Joseph (41) and Anna (34) Schumacher on Joseph's farm in Johnson Twp., Fleming County, Kentucky. The 1920 census asked the questions "Year of immigration" and "naturalized or alien." These questions were answered "prior to 1900" and "unk." No occupation was given for Louis.

Cause of death: general toxemia due to chronic rhumatism complicated with hyhutis (?).
