John Henry Blake

John Henry Blakes's obituary appeared in The Times recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on January 11, 1941. HENRY BLAKE SUCCUMBS Henry Blake, farmer of Enoch township, died Friday morning
at 8 o'clock in Memorial hospital, Marietta, following a major
operation which he underwent several weeks ago. Mr. Blake was around sixty years of age and had been a life
long member of St. Mary's Catholic church at Fulda. Surviving
are his wife, Mrs. Catherine Noll Blake and the following children,
Earl Blake of Iowa, Harley Blake of Enoch township, Mary Blake
of Columbus, Saraphina Balke and Roy Blake of the home. The
brothers are Roman Blake of Fulda, Fred Blake of Dexter City
and Joseph Blake who resides in Iowa.


Catharina Noll

In 1900, 15 year old Catherine Noll lived on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. She did not attend school.


Clemence J. Blake

Clemence Blake's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on May 23, 1938. RITES HELD FOR NATIVE OF NOBLE-CO CALDWELL -- Funeral services for Clemence Blake, 23, better
known as "Smiley," who died suddenly Friday at Mercy hospital,
Canton, following an emergency operation for appendicitis, were
held at St. Mary's Catholic church, Fulda, 10 miles east of here,
Monday morning with Rev. B. J. Mattes conducting the requiem
high mass. Interment was made in the church cemetery. The young man, born and reared in the Fulda community, had
been employed for the past two years in Canton. He was stricken
suddenly ill with appendicitis last Monday morning. He was a
member of St. Mary's Catholic church and attended Fulda high
school. Surviving are his parents, Henry and Katherine Noll Blake; five
sisters and brothers, Harley, Dexter City, Earl, Iowa; Mary, Colum-
bus; Saraphine, Zanesville, and Roy, of the home, in addition to his
grandmother, Mrs. Mary Noll, of near Harriettsville.


Norbert Sebastian Crum

On 4 Jun 1942, Norbert S. Crum enlisted as a private in the armed forces at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. His occupation was geographer.

The following article appeared in The Stars and Stripes newspaper on February 28, 1945: KRAUTS ON THE HUMAN SIDE What would you do if you were a medic with a wounded dough
on litter and flying German bullets were keeping you on your belly
in the mud. Cpl. Buddie Culpepper, Konawa, Okla., and Cpl. Norbert
Crum, Sarahsville, Ohio, both with A Company of the 45th Division's
120th Medical Bn., stood up, grabbed the litter and started back. They
expected the Germans to continue shooting, but for some reason the
Heinies stopped, and they got back okay.


Norbert and Esther Crum of Sarahsville received the "Farmer of the Year" award from the Noble County Chamber of Commerce in 1976. Norbert Crum was still living in Sarahsville, Noble Co., OH in Jun 2001 and Sep 2004.


Esther Amelia Arnold

Birth announcement from The Zanesville Times Recorder, 23 Jan 1926:
BIRTH ANNOUNCED
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Arnold announce the birth of a daughter born Friday
Jan. 22 at their home near Fulda.

Wedding announcement:
ARNOLD-CRUM NUPTIALS PERFORMED IN FULDA
The marriage of Miss Esther Arnold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Arnold
of Caldwell, to Norbert Crum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Crum of Sarahsville, took
place Wednesday, May 14 [1947] at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fulda. Rev. J.B.
Matts read the double ring service.
Miss Alberta Arnold, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and Wilfred Heppner,
cousin of the bridegroom, was best man. Mrs. Crum graduated from Caldwell high
school and was formerly employed by the Hoover company in Zanesville. Mr. Crum
attended Summerfield high school and spent four years in the Army, 28 months of which
he served overseas. The couple are living near Sarahsville.

The best man and maid of honor were married to each other a year later.


Obituary:
Esther Amelia Crum, 66, of 23775 State Route 78, Sarahsville, died Friday (June 5,
1992) at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell. She was born Jan 21, 1926, in Noble
County, daughter of the late Raymond W. and Clara Eva Miller Arnold. She was a
graduate of Caldwell High School, a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Carlisle,
and its Catholic Women's Club.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Arnold. Mrs. Crum leaves behind her
husband, Norbert S. Crum, whom she married May 14, 1947; three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence
(Elaine) Baer of Lancaster, Mrs. John (Marilyn) Harding of Marietta and Mrs. Shawn (Linda)
Wilson of Pleasantville; six sons, Richard Crum of Lowe, William Crum of Pataskala; Eugene
and Dale Crum, both of Caldwell, Robert Crum of Louisville, and Ronald Crum of Sarahsville;
six sisters, Mrs. Wilfred (Alberta) Heppner of Louisville; Mrs. Fred (Madeline) Warner of
New Concord, Mrs. Bernard (Mary Lou) Thieman of Waterford, Mrs. Walter (Rita) Maurer
of Canton; Mrs. Howard (Carol) Hupp of Caldwell, and Judy Lewis of Zanesville; 19 grand-
children, one great-grandson, a step-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic
Church, Carlisle, with Rev. Fr. Samuel Saprano as celebrant. Burial was in the Church
cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Noble County Branch of the American Cancer
Society. The Caldwell Chapel of Cawley and Peoples Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.


Wilfred Joseph Heppner

A note in the Zanesville Signal (pg 2) on 2 Nov 1938 stated:
Wilford Heppner of East street [Caldwell] fractured his collar bone Sunday
while playing football on the local field.

Wilfred and Alberta moved to Louisville, Stark County, Ohio after their marriage. They raised their seven children there.

Obituary:
Wilfred J. Heppner, age 82, of Louisville, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Saturday, October 4,
2003 in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Wilfred was
born October 28, 1920 in Caldwell, the son of the late John and Elizabeth
(Shockling) Heppner. He was a former machinist for the Timken Roller
Bearing Company, retiring in 1982 following 41 years of service. Wilfred
was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW Post
#7490. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and was an avid reader and
card player. Wilfred was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in
Louisville.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Alberta (Arnold) Heppner whom he
married June 19, 1948; seven children, Joyce and Robert Packard of Worcester,
MA, Jeannette and John Huebner of Roanoke, VA, James and Linda Heppner
of Louisville, Joanne Lamp of Louisville, John and Barbara Heppner of Picker-
ington, Jeff and Verna Heppner of Alliance, and Joe Heppner of Louisville; two
sisters, Wilma Fitzhugh and Virginia Wells; 12 grandchildren, Lt. Nathan Packard,
Donald Heppner, Sarah Felter, Seth Felter, Matthew Packard, Jacob Lamp,
Christopher Heppner, Pvt. Michael Heppner, Brittany Heppner, Paul Heppner,
Emily Heppner and Mark Heppner; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded
in death by three sisters and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St.
Louis Catholic Church in Louisville with Msgr. Kenneth Miller officiating. Inter-
ment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday evening 5-8
p.m. at the Paquelet-Falk Funeral Home in Louisville.


Alberta Martha Arnold

The following article appeared on page 4 of the Zanesville Times Recorder on 4 Jul 1940:
STITCH--IN--TIME 4--H CLUB
Thursday afternoon the Stitch-in-Time 4-H club met at
Fulda School at 1 o'clock. Nineteen members were present,
and the advisor, Marcella Fox. Several of the girls had completed
their projects.
Plays were practiced, several songs were sung. Demon-
strations were given on sewing on snaps by Vera Crock; sewing
on buttons by Ardelia Miller; working blanket stitch by Rita
Smithberger; filled stitch by Gladys Crock; working button hole
by Elenora Roehirg. The roll call was answered by naming a fav-
orite tree. Refreshments were served by Eileen Weisent, Arline
Schoeppner, Gladys Crock, Alberta Arnold. The next meeting
will be on July 11 at 1 o'clock at Fulda school.

Mrs. Wilfred Heppner (above) was a bride in a ceremony performed June 19 [1948]
at the St. Mary Catholic church at Fulda. The former Miss Alberta Arnold, she is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Arnold of Caldwell. The bridegroom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Heppner, also of Caldwell. Miss Madeline Arnold was her sister's
only attendant and Harold Heppner, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man. The newly-
weds will reside at 1610 Dueber avenue in Canton. Mr. Heppner is employed at the
Timken Roller Bearing company in that city.

Carol Arnold

From the Zanesville Signal, 6 Feb 1940:
ANNOUNCE BIRTH
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Arnold of Fulda community
announce the birth of a daughter Monday morning.

Carol Arnold was a member of the Caldwell high school class of 1958.


Elijah Frederick Crum

On June 5, 1917, 27 year old, self-employed farmer, Fredrick Elijah Crum (dob: December 17, 1889, pob: East Union, Ohio) of RFD4, Sarahsville, Ohio registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card, he was married and had one child. His physical description is given as medium height and build, with blue eyes and light hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, 30 year old farmer Elijah Crum lived with his wife Celia (26) on a farm they owned in Stock Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Dalores (sic) (3 yrs ? mos) and Alberta (1 yr ? mos). All members of the household were born in Ohio as were Elijah's and Cecilia's parents. Living on the adjacent farm was Elijah's borther Charles.

In 1930, Elijah T. Crum (40) and his wife Cecelia R. (37) owned a farm in Stock Twp., Noble Coumty, Ohio. They lived their with their children Delores A. (13), Alberta C. (11), Norbert S. (9), Mary R. (8) and Margaret M. (6). All of the children attended school. Elijah's brother Charles lived next door, and their cousin Urban Crum lived nearby.

His physical description is given as height: 5'8", weight: 140#, eyes: blue, hair: gray, complexion: light.

CRUM FAMILY HAS ANNUAL RENUION
CALDWELL - The annual reunion of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah F. Crum,
of Caldwell, was held Sunday at the home of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert
Crum near East Union. All members of the family were present, including five
daughters and their husbands, a son and his wife, and 28 grandchildren. Miss
Brenda Dozer of near Sonora was a guest.
Others in attendance included: Mr. and Mrs. Elijah F. Crum of Caldwell, Mr.
and Mrs. Ephraim Heil, Dorothy Ann, Eddie, Darlene, Gary and Paul, all of
Sonora Route 1; Mr. and Mrs. Terrence Hohman and sons Donald, Herman,
James and Vernon; Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Shafer, Larry and Marlene; all of
Caldwell Route 4; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hohman, Neil, Barbara, Eddie, Danny,
twins Margaret and Marcella, David and Roseann, of Caldwell Route 1; Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Zwick, Johnny, Tommy and Mary Jo, of Summerfield Route
1; Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Crum, Elane, Richard, Billy, Eugene, Robert and
Ronnie.
A basket dinner was served at noon. Informal diversions occupied the after-
noon.


Obituary:
Elijah F. Crum, 85, of 910 Fairground street, Caldwell, a retired farmer, died at 11
am. Saturday [13 Apr 1975] in Good Samaritan Medical Center. He was born Dec. 17,
1889 in Noble County. His wife, the former Cecelia Shockling, died Feb. 14, 1974.
Mr. Crum was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and its Knights of Columbus
of Caldwell.
Surviving are a son, Norbert Crum of Sarahsville Route 1; five daughters, Mrs.
Ephraim (Delores) Heil of Adamsville, Mrs. Terence (Alberta) Hohman of Canton, Mrs.
Joseph (Mary Rose) Hohman and Mrs. Jack (Margaret) Hanes, both of Caldwell and
Mrs. Charles (Joann) Zwick of Summerfield; a brother, Edward of Caldwell; four sisters,
Mrs. Rose Schell, and Mrs. Lucy Reich, both of Canton, Mrs. Nellie Nauer of Akron
and Mrs. Nora Kuhn of Richards road; 34 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Stephens’ Catholic Church. Burial will be in
Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today at Estadt Funeral
Home in Caldwell where friends may call anytime.


Rose Cecilia Schockling

Obituary:
Mrs. Cecelia Crum, 81, of 911 Fairground street, Caldwell died at 10:40 a.m. Thursday at her home after a long illness.
She was born Jan. 13, 1893, in Noble County, a daughter of Sebastian and Caroline Schockling.
Mrs. Crum was a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church and its Catholic Women’s Club of the parish.
Survivors include her husband, Elijah Crum; a son, Norbert of Sarahsville Route; five daughters, Mrs. Ephraim (Delores) Heil of Adamsville, Mrs. Terence (Alberta) Hohman of Canton, Mrs. Joseph (Mary Rose) Hohman of Caldwell, Mrs. Bernard (Margaret) Shafer of Caldwell and Mrs. Charles (Joan) Swick of Summerfield Route; 34 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, two sisters, Miss Ann Schockling of Nob Hill and Mrs. Joseph Archer of Caldwell; a brother, Andrew Schockling of Woodsfield.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephens Church with Rev. Lawrence Luciana officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Caldwell.
Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today in Estadt Funeral Home at Caldwell where friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
