Roy J. Burkhart

Roy James Burkhart, 87, of Marietta, passed away on Thursday (May 8, 2014) at the Ohio State University Ross Heart Center in Columbus, Ohio.

He was born on April 3, 1927, in Wheeling, W.Va. to the late Sylvester Joseph Burkhart and Bertha Clara Schott. Roy grew up on his family's farm in Fulda, Ohio (Noble County).

Roy graduated from Caldwell High School in 1945. Shortly after, he was drafted into the Air Force where he served stateside for a year and a half. After training the war drew to a close and he was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1946.

Roy attended the University of Dayton for a short time before moving to Marietta in 1948 to accept a job at B.F. Goodrich (Oak Grove) where he worked for the next 51 years, retiring in 1999.

Roy married Janice Anne Bertram on Oct. 14, 1950, in the St. Mary's Rectory. They were married for 62 years.

Roy enjoyed hunting, golf, bowling, cars, reading and baseball. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Janice, his daughter, Linda Burkhart, his parents, Sylvester and Bertha, his brother, Raymond Burkhart, and his sister, Velma Burkhart.

Roy is survived by one son and two daughters. Tim Burkhart of Dublin, Ohio, Debbie (John) Roberts of Westerville, Ohio and Pamela Burkhart of Marietta. Roy is also survived by four grandsons, Sean Roberts of Durango, Colo., Ryan Roberts of Columbus, Ohio, Kyle Burkhart of Columbus, Ohio and Kory Burkhart of Dallas, Texas.

Roy will be entombed at East Lawn Hope Mausoleum, Marietta, on Saturday (May 17, 2014).

Services will be held at noon on Saturday (May 17) at the Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday (May 16) at the funeral home and again from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.

Many thanks to the caregivers and staff at Harmar Place who took such loving care of both of our parents. Their kindness will never be forgotten.
