Clark Otis Blackstone

In 1910, 36 year old farm laborer Clark O. Blackstone lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio on the farm of his divorced mother-in-law, Mary Kress Heil Miller (61). Also living in the house were Clark's wife Mary M. (25) and their children Marilla K. (7), Anna P. (5), Wilbur F. (3) and John L. (1). Adjscent farms in the census belonged to Alex Snider and Peter Craft.

On Jul 12, 1925, Clarke Blackstone and five of his children attended a triple birthday party at the home of Frank Smoth to honor Mrs. Alex (Tillie) Gerst, Frank Smith, and Fred Fox. See notes of Fred Fuchs (Fox) for text of the article from the Zanesville Times Recorder.

The following article appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on Nov. 15, 1927 FULDA SCHOOL CLOSED CALDWELL, O., Nov. 14 -- Fifteen cases of scarlet fever in
and near Fulda and one at South Olive were reported under
quarantine today by Dr. J. L. Gray, Noble county health com-
missioner. The school at Fulda was closed and no public
meetings will be held until further orders. There are seven cases of the disease in the Clark Black-
stone family in Fulda, four in the Lawrence R. Crum Leo
Gerst family, three and Frank Crum one. There is also
one case of the fever in the Albert J. Crock family, of South
Olive.

According to his death certificate, Clark's mother's name was Lydia Secrest. Other records refute this. Secrest was Clark's maternal grandmother's maiden name. Death certificate informant was Clark's son, George A. Blackstone. Cause of death was "cancer of abdomen (apparently originating in region of spleen), metastasis, malnutrition, starvation to (illeg.)"


Maria Margaret Heil

According to the 1910 census, all four of Mary Heil Blackstone's children were living. She was known as Maggie.

Mary Margaret Heil Blackstone's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on June 22, 1959
Mrs. Mary Margaret Blackstone, 75, died Saturday afternoon at her home in Fulda, following and extended illness. Born near Fulda, April 30, 1884, she was a daughter of Peter and Mary Kress Heil. Her husband, Clark Blackstone died in 1942. She was the last member of her family.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Anna Ritterbeck of Akron, Mrs. Agnes Thompson of near Caldwell and Mrs. Marilla Schoeppner of Cumberland; six sons, Wilbur of Cleveland, John of Lewisville, Bernard of Huntington, Ind., George Albert of the home, Paul of Chandlersville and Elmer of Zanesville; 33 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A son Francis, was killed in action during World Warr (sic) II. Two other children and a stepson are also deceased.
The body was taken to the family home where friends may call and where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Monday.
Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the St. Mary's Catholic Church at Fulda by Rev. Fr. J.J. Donaldson. Burial will be in the church cemetery in charge of Brubach Funeral Home at Summerfield.

Francis Blackstone

Pfc. Francis Blackstone's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) on Oct. 21, 1948
SOLDIER'S RITES TO BE SATURDAY
CALDWELL, O. -- The body of Pfc. Francis H. Blackstone, son of Margaret and the late C. O. Blackstone of Fulda arrived in Cambridge Wednesday evening and was taken to the Brubach funeral home in Summerfield.
Pfc. Blackstone was killed in action in performance of his duty on Peleliu island in the South Pacific, September 18, 1944.
Pfc. Blackstone enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps October 15, 1943, at Cincinnati. He received his basic training at San Diego Calif., and training in specialized warfare at Camp Elliot, Calif. He was never able to reveal the type of specialized training received. He was promoted to Pfc. January 1, 1944. He embarked Feb. 4, 1944, for active duty in the South Pacific and participated in two major engagements at Peleliu and Ngesebus. He was with the First Marine Division, infantry battalion, squadron 3. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church at Fulda. In addition to his mother he is survived by three sisters; Mrs. Beda Schoeppner of Cumberland, Mrs. Emil Ritterbeck of Akran (sic), and Mrs. Harry Thompson of Harriettsville, and six brothers; W. F. Blackstone of Caldwell, John of Lewisville, Bernard of Huntington, Indiana, Paul of Caldwell, R. F. D., Elmer of Marietta, and George of the home. A brother Embert of Grandville, died in august, 1948.
Solemn requiem high mass will be sung in St. Mary's church, Fulda, Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock by the pastor, the Very Rev. B. J. Mattes, assisted by Fr. Andrew Hohman and Fr. Martin Yanicko. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military rites by the Caldwell American Legion post under the direction of Commander Dwight Wiley.
The body will remain in Brubach funeral home until the hour of the services Saturday morning.


J. Leonard Miller

In 1870, 20 year old Leonard Miller lived and worked on the farm of his father and step-mother in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio.

In 1880, 29 year old farmer Leonard Miller and his wife Mary (29) lived a few farms away from Mary's parents in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. With them lived their five surviving children: Virginia (), twins Frederick and Alexander (6), Olivia (3), and Felix (1). None of the children attended school. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. Adjacent households in the census belonged to John Christopher and Joseph Nau.

At the time of the 1910 census, 60 year old widower Leonard Miller lived as a hired man on the farm of Ira Sheets (38) in Plain Twp., Stark County, Ohio. [Ira Sheetz does not appear to be related to the Scheetz family from Fulda.] According to the census, Leonard Miller was a native of Ohio; his parents were German.

Leonard Miller's death certificate did not provide any details about the circumstances of his death. From death certificate:

Leonard did not have any sons named John. The informant for his death certificate could have been his brother, John, but the informant gave his residence as Caldwell, and Leonard's brother John was a resident of Miltonsburg, Ohio, well over an hour east of Caldwell.


Mary Blandina Miller

On 12 Jul 1883, the Fulda column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
Births -- July 5, to Leonard and Mary Miller, a daughter.

Mary Blandina Miller's death notice appeared in the Fulda column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press on 22 May 1884
Died -- May 5th, little daughter of Leonard Miller, aged 10 months,
died sudden by swallowing a large bean.


Albert Miller

A 12 year old named Gilbert Miller lived in the household of his aunt, Elizabeth Miller Hupp, and her son's family (Henry Hupp) in 1900. Elizabeth was the sister of Albert's father. Gilbert was born in Jan 1888. It is not known if "Gilbert Miller" and "Albert Miller" (both born in the same month) are the same person.

Possible match in 1910 census: 20 year old Herbert Miller was a servant in the household of Joseph G. Mehler; Ohio, Noble Co., ED 0112, visit 0179.

Isaac Blackstone

An Issac C. Blackstone served in Company C of the 172nd Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. Date of enlistment was 27 Apr 1864, and was discharged on 3 Sep 1864, having served 4 months and six days. No disabilities or comments are noted on the 1890 Veterans' census schedule. It is not known if this is the father of Clark Blackstone.

In 1870, Isaac (25) and Eliza (23) Blackstone lived on the farm of Thomas (64) and Nancy (68) Blackstone in Cumberland, Spencer Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio.

In 1880, 35 year old farmer "Issac Blackston" lived in Spencer Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio with his wife Eliza A. (33) and children Sarela M. (9), Willis E. (8), Clark O. (5) and William B. (3). Also living in the household were 17 year old domestic servant Delilia Ann Trott and laborer Charles S. Blackston (15). The relationship between Charles and Issac Blackstone is not known. Sarela, Willis and Clark attended school in 1880. Issac's father was born in Pennsylvania, and his mother was born in Maryland. The next farm enumerated in the census belonged to 47 year old Mary Blackstone and her three children aged 19 to 24. The relationship between Mary Blackstone and Clark Blackstone is unknown.

In 1890, Isaac Blackstone lived in Renrock, Noble County, Ohio, according to the 1890 US Census Veterans' Schedule.

Following the death of his first wife, Eliza Dudley, Isaac married Matilda Dudley. The relationship (if any) between the two women is not known.

At the time of the 1900 census, Isaac Blackstone (56) owned a mortgaged farm in Center Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his second wife Matilda (49) and children Cashus L. (11), Goldie J. (7), and William B. (23), and grandson Charles E. (3). The parents of Charles E. Blackstone (who was born Aug 1896 in Ohio) are not known. Only Cashus attended school.

In 1910, 65 year old farmer Issac Blackstone lived on a farm in Salt Creek Twp., Muskingum Co., Ohio with his second wife Matilda, and their two children Carl (21) and Goldie (17). Also living in the household was Issac's grandson, Embert (13). Embert is the son of Issac's son from his first marriage, Clark Blackstone. Issac was born in Ohio. His father was born in Pennsylvania, and his mother was born in Maryland.


Eliza Anne Dudley

According to the 1880 census, Eliza's father and mother were born in Virginia and Ohio, respectively.


William B. Blackstone

In 1990, unmarried William Blackstone (23) lived on the farm of his father and step-mother in Center Twp., Noble County, Ohio. During the previous year, William worked for six months as a day laborer.


Isaac Blackstone

Matilda Margaret Dudley

The 1910 census is not clear on Matilda Blackstone's age. It's either 39 or 59. (1871 or 1851) The census states that both of Matilda's two children were living in 1910, and that both of whom lived at home Matilda is the second wife of Issac Blacstone. Matilda and her parents were born in Ohio.


John A. Hill

In 1900, 33 year old farmer John Hill lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 30 year old wife Rose, and their five daughters: Justina (9), Mary (7), Emma (5), Treasa (2), and Minnie (4 months). John Hill and his parents were born in Ohio.

Records conflict on year of birth: Oct 1866 (1900 census) vs. 15 Oct 1867 (Snider).

Rose Schafer

According to the 1900 census, Rose was born in Ohio to German-born parents. She had given birth to five children, all of whom were still living in 1900.


Emma Catharina Hill

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph as Sister M. Crecentia. Emma did not appear with her family in the 1910 census.

Joseph Miller

In 1900, 34 year old farmer Joseph Miller lived on a mortgaged farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 31 year old wife Elizabeth and their eight children: Roman (11), Agnes (8), Cornelius (6), Icydore (5), Blanch (5), Mary (3), Terrance (1) and Albert (3 months). Only Roman and Agnes were old enough to go to school. During the previous year they attended classes for 4 and 3 months, respectively.

The 1910 census shows 45 year old widower Joseph Miller Jr. still living on a mortgaged farm in Enoch Twp. He had been married for 20 years. Living with him were eight of his children Agnes (18), John C. (16), Henry I. (14), Elizabeth B. (14), Mary F. (13), William C. (11), Andy A. (10) and Mildred C. (5). All the children attended school except Agnes, John and little Mildred. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Isaac Harper and John Fogle. Interestingly, the census taker indicated that Joseph had a total of 8 children, all of whom were still lving. (This question was supposed to be asked only of women.) The information contradicts church records, which state that the family had 10 children, at least one of whom (Francis) is known to died before 1910.

Obituary from the Zanesville Signal, 28 Feb 1934:
Funeral services were held this morning for Joseph
Miller, 68, who died late Sunday from an illness of heart
trouble, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Urban Nau,
South Olive. He was the son of the late Henry and Mary
A. Yeagle Miller and was born and reared near Fulda.
His wife, Elizabeth Hill Miller, preceded him in death,
27 years ago. He is survived by five sons, Roman of Detroit,
Cornelius, Clarence, and Isadore of Iowa, Albert of Dudley,
four daughters, Mrs. Agnes Greer and Mrs. Blanche Row-
lands, Zanesville, Mrs. Mildred Fough, Cleveland, and Mrs.
Urban Nau, at whose home he died, 21 grandchildren,
one brother, John Miller, near Fulda, one half-sister, Mrs.
Bertha Otterbine, and one half-brother, George Miller,
Marietta.
Services were held at St. Mary’s church at Fulda
at 10 o’clock conducted by Rev. Father Mattes.


Isadore Henry Miller

Isadore moved to Iowa, according to his father's 1934 obituary.


William Terrence Miller

John Miller's 1934 obituary lists a son named Cornelius living in Iowa. This may be William Terrance Miller.


Henry D. Hill

Henry was a blacksmith in Carlisle (also called Berne). Henry Hill lived in Berne, Noble Co., OH in 1939. Henry's tombstone indicates that he is buried with his second wife, Blanche.

After the death of his first wife, Mary, Henry's daughters were put into an orphanage. Henry's son, Howard was raised by his Warner grandparents. Howard never knew what became of his sisters.

At the time of the 1920 census, Henry Hill owned a mortgaged home in Carlisle Village, Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. The name of Henry's 47 year old wife is illegible... it looks like four letters begining with an H or N. Also living in the household were four children: Leo T. (10), Francis (9), Leona M. (7), and Clarence H. (3). The three oldest children attended school. Henry was a self-employed blacksmith.

In 1930, Henry D. Hill (59) and his wife, A. Blanche Hill owned a home in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. They lived there with their three children, Francis L. (19), Leona M. (17), and Clarence H. (13). All of the children attended school. The census indicates that Henry was 25 years old at the time of his first marriage, and Blanche was 36. Henry owned a blacksmith shop.

Henry Hills’ obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 24 Jan 1955:
HENRY D. HILL CALLED BY DEATH
SUMMERFIELD, O., Jan. 23 - Henry D. Hill, 84, of Berne died at a
Marietta nursing home yesterday following an illness of two months.
He was born in Noble county Sept 9, 1870, a son of Leonard and
Mary Michael Hill. He was a life long resident of the Berne community.
Mr. Hill was a retired blacksmith.
He was married in 1896 to Mary Warner, who died in 1903. He
later married Blanche Hood in 1908. His second wife died in 1952.
Surviving are one daughter, Miss Leona Hill of Marietta; four sons,
Howard of Canton, Leo of Columbus, Francis of Cleveland and Clar-
ence of the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; one brother, Andy
of Caldwell; and one sister, Mrs. Lillian Dimmerling of Caldwell; 10
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The body is at the Brubach funeral home here where it will remain
until services at 9:30 o’clock Tuesday morning at the St. Michael’s
Catholic church in Berne. Fr. Joseph Gardner will officiate. Burial will
be in the church cemetery.
