Philip Ignatius Burkhart

In 1900, Philip Burkhart (28) and his wife "Emma C." (29) lived in Summit Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio with their children William (5), Mary (2), and Laura C. (1).

In 1920, 48 year old farmer Phillip Burkhart still lived in Summit Twp. with his 49 year old wife, Anna C., and five children: William M. (24), Ottilia B. (22), Mary F. (22), Herman A. (18), and Elmer J. (10). Phillip was born in Ohio, as was his mother. His father was born in Germany. Ottilia was Philip's daughter-in-law, wife of his son William. (In actuallity, 22 year old Ottilia was Philip's daughter-in-law, not his daughter. She was married to his son, William.)

There is some confusion about who the parents of Philip Ignatius Burkhart are. Some researchers (Hartley) place him in the family of Frederick and Margaret Schaad Burkhart. Others (Crum, Wright) have George and Mary Yontz Burkhart as his parents. According to the 1880 census for Monroe County, both Frederick and George Burkhart had an 8 year old son named Philip. The FuldaOhio.com database places him as the son of George Burkhart based on his birthplace (from Hartley) and the fact that George lived in Seneca Twp. in 1880. Frederick Burkhart lived in Malaga Twp.

In Oct 2005, Rita Paul Burkhart, wife of James P. Burkhart confirmed that her husband's grandfather was Philip Ignatius Burkhart (25 Nov 1871 to 1 Dec 1946), son of George Martin Burkhart and Mary Ann Yontz, husband of Anna Catherine Kuhn (1870-1922).

Anna Catherine Kuhn

Sources conflict on year of birth:
1871 -- Haren
1870 -- 1900 census
The fact that two censuses list Anna as being a year older than her husband suggest that the 1870 date may be correct.
All three of Anna Kuhn Burkhart's children were alive in 1900. Although some sources (Wright) give the date of death for Anna Kuhn Burkhart as 1918, she lived with her husband at the time of the 1920 census.

Mary Theresa Burkhart

From Rita Paul Burkhart:
Mary Burkhart entered the the Order of Sant Francis as Sister Leo. Sister Leo worked at St. Francis General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania making salads for the residents all her life as a nun.
She came home to Ohio to visit once a year. She told the family that Father Joseph Finan (pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Burkhart, Monroe County, Ohio) would come over to visit. The sister in charge told Sister Leo one time to leave a bottle of beer for him on the nightstand in his room. The next morning when she went to clean his room, she was amazed to find that he drank the whole bottle. Sister Leo was a very polite woman, and evidently, very reserved.
Sister Leo retired after working 50 years at the hospital. She suffered a severe stroke shortly after her retirement.

Laura Ceilia Burkhart

Laura is not listed by other sources (Haren or Wright) as a child in this family.

George Martin Burkhart

The 1870 census listed the names of all people in each household, but did not state their relationships. At that time, farmer George (25) and Mary (19) Burkhart and little Gulianne (2 months, born in March) lived in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Three other members of the Burkhart family lived in the home: Magdelena (56) "helps daughter in law", Elizabeth (20) "domestic servant", and Fred (16) "works on farm." Presumably, these are George's mother, sister, and brother, respectively. George did not own any property, but his personal possessions were valued at $122. Magdelena owned $4200 worth of real estate, suggesting that she owned the farm. Her personal possessions were worth $648. According to the census, George, Magdelena and Elizabeth were born in Baden (Germany). Mary, Gulianne and Fred were natives of Ohio. No one in the household attended school Mary and Elizabeth could not write.

In 1880, farmer Martin Burkhart (34) lived in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Mary A.(28) and five children: Julia M. E. (10), Phillip (8), Filiminia (6), Tracey (4), and Alexander (2). The oldest three children attended school.

In 1900., George M. Burkhart (58) owned a mortgaged farm in Seneca Twp.He lived there with his wife of 32 years, Mary, and five of their children: Alexander (22), Mary (19), Sylvester (7), Bertha (13), and Benjamin (10). Only Bertha and Benjamin attended school.

At the time of the 1910 census, George M. Burkhart (65) owned a farm in Seneca Twp. where he lived with his two youngest children, Bertha (22), and Benjamin (20). The census, which was taken in April 1910, indicates that George was married, that this was his first marriage, and that he had been married for the past 40 years. However, his wife is not included in the household. Other researchers (Burkhart, Haren) state that George's wife died in January of that year. George was born in Germany, but the year of his immigration to the US is illegible in the census.

Four of George's children -- Philip, Theresa, Mary Ann and Alexander -- married children of Elias Kuhn -- Anna, Peter, John and Mary .

Mary Ann Yontz

The 1900 census states that nine of Mary Ann Burkhart's eleven children were living at the time of the census. According to researcher Mark Haren, Mary Ann had at least twlelve children. Twins Ella and Della, born in 1884, are known to have died... Ella in infancy, and Della at age 10. However Joseph Burkhart, who would have been 14, is missing from the 1900 census. The whereabouts of two older daughters, Juliann and Philomena, are also unknown.

Joseph Martin Burkhart

Joseph Burkhart is not listed with the family in the 1900 census. He would have been 14 years old at the time.
