Joseph Crock

The church where Joseph Crock was baptized -- St. James in Wheeling -- is now St. Joseph Cathedral.

From Leander Crock:
Joseph Crock learned the trade of stone cutting and worked for Michael Blake in his stone quarry, and for his father-in-law (Nicholas Schott) as a wood chopper. In the 1860 census, Joseph Crock listed his occupation as a stonecutter, in 1870 it was wood chopper, and in 1880, he was listed as a farmer. Joseph and his seven sons cut the stone for St. Henry's church in Harriettsville, Noble County, Ohio; the parish to which the family belonged.

At the time of the 1870 census, 28 year old farmer Joseph Crock lived with his wife Mary (23) and their sons Edward (2) and Jasper (3 mos). Their farm was in Berne, Jefferson Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. The value of Joseph's real estate was $2100 and his personal estate $662. Joseph was born in Virginia (West) and Mary and the boys in Ohio. Joseph's parents and Mary's father were foreign born.

According to Delores Snider, Joseph Crock and Mary Schott Crock moved to Harrietsville (Noble Co.) OH in 1870.

From the 1880 census: 38 year old farmer Joseph Crock lived on a farm in Jefferson Twp., Noble Co., Ohio with his wife Mary (34) and their sons Edward (12), Jasper (10), Nicholas (8), Henry (7), Lewis (4), and William (2). The three older children attended school the previous year. Joseph was born in (West) Virginia to German-born parents. Mary and all of the children, as well as Mary's parents, were born in Ohio.

From the 1900 census: 58 year old farmer Joseph Crock lived on a farm that he owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble County Ohio with his 51 year old second wife, Catherine. Also in the house were four children: Frona Crock (16), Annie Crock (15), Leo Crock (11), and step daughter Louise Shier (14). Joseph was born in (West) Virginia to German-born parents. Everyone in the home could read and write. The census states that Joseph and Catherine had been married for 35 years, but this is not correct, since Catherine's daughter was 14 years old.

In 1910, 68 year old Joseph Crock lived in Noble County Ohio with his 61 year old wife Catherine, who was born in Pennsylvania.

According to researcher Judy Robinson (great granddaughter of Joseph's son Edward Crock), Joseph Crock married Catherine Scherr after the death of Mary Schott. Catherine's daughter Louise Schear married Joseph's son Peter Lewis Crock.

Following the death of her first husband, Catherine Strauss Scherr married Joseph Crock. Catheine's daughter Louise would later marry Joseph's son Louis.

Lawrence J. Schaad's death certificate states that he was born in Monroe County, Ohio. It is likely that the informant was mistaken, since all other evidence indicates that he was born in Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Margaret M. Arnold

Margaret M. Arnold was the daughter of Raymond A. and Elizabeth Arnold. (see 1930 US Census, OH, Washington Co., Warren Twp., ED 31, pg 19, fam 269-171). As far as can be determined, there is no relationship between this Arnold family and the Arnold families living in Fulda, Noble County, Ohio.

Margaret Arnold Schaad was living in Lowell, Washington Co., OH in Jan 2001.

Frank John Schaad

On September 10, 1918, 32 year old Frank John Schaad of 145 June Way, Braddock, Pennsylvania registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card he was born on October 6, 1885. He worked as a die maker for Columbia Steel and Shafting Co. in Rankin, [Pennsylvania]. His nearest relative is given as Mrs. Frank J. Schaad of 145 June Way, Braddock, Pennsylvania. His physical description is given as tall medium build, blue eyes and brown hair.

In 1920, 34 year old "Frank Schwad" lived in a rented house at 145 June Way in Braddock, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. With him lived his wife Anna (24) and children Lawrence (6), Katherine (4), and Marie (1). Also living with them was Frank's 67 year old widowed mother, Katherine. Only Lawrence attended school. Of the children, Lawrence and Marie were born in Pennsylvania, but Katherine was born in Ohio. Frank was employed as a die-maker at a foundry.

By 1930 farmer Frank Schaad (43) Had returned to Ohio, where owned a farm in Watertown Township, Washington Co., Ohio. Living with Frank were his wife Anna (39) and children Lawrence (17), Catherine (14), Marie (11), Gertrude (8), Beatrice (5) and Frances (3 yrs 1 mo.). Based on census data, Frank and Anna had been married for 18 years. Lawrence, Catherine, Marie and Gertrude attended school. Frank, Anna, Lawrence, Catherine, and Marie could read and write. All members of the household except Anna were born in Ohio as were Frank's parents. Ann was born in Pennsylvania and her parents were born in Germany. Frank was 25 and Anna was 21 at the time of their marriage. The family owned a radio. Living two farms away from Frank in 1930 was Henry Schott and family. Henry was the son of George Schott and Katharina Schoeppner Schott and was Frank's first cousin.

Mr. and Mrs Frank Schaad and daughters Catherine, Marie, Beatrice and Gertrude and sons Francis and Lawrence of Lowell attended the annual Schott reunion on Sunday, July 30, 1933 at the fairgrounds in Marietta, Ohio. See notes of Jacob Schott for a complete list of attendees.

In April 1942, 55 year old Frank John Schaad was required to register for the US military draft. He gave his residence as Watertown Twp., Wash. County, Ohio, but his mailing address was Lowell RFD No 4, Wash Co., Ohio. He named the person who would always know his address as Anna Schaad of Lowell RFT No. 4. Frank stated that he was born on 10-6-1888 in Wash Co., Ohio. Frank said that he was self-employed in Watertown. He was described as being 5'11", 152 lbs, gray eyes, gray hair and a light complexion.

Anna A. Full

No record was found for Anna Schaad in the Social Security death index. The Onio online death certificate index gives her age at death as 82, which would put her year of birth at around 1890. However, she was 24 at the time of the 1920 census, which makes her year of birth as about 1895. Anna was born in Pennsylvania to German-born parents.
