Notes

C. Nicholas Sorg

A note from the 15 Jan 1919 issue of the Republican Journal:
The following persons spent Sunday at Dora Warner's: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kinnen, Catherine Sorg, Bernetta and Beulah Kinnen, Clement Smith, Clyde and Edward Schehl, Nicholas Sorg, Clarence Schwallie, George Kinnen, Clarence Thompson and Bede Crum.

Adam Riesbeck

In 1850, 37 year old German-born farmer Adam Reisbeck lived in Centre Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with him was 65 year old Margaret Reisbeck, and children Catherine (14), Barbara (9), Maria (7), Mark (5), and Martin (2). It is theorized that Adam was a widower living with his widowed mother, but this has not been proven. None of the children attended school. Adam's farm was valued at $1000.

At the time of the 1870 census, 57 year old Bavarian-born farmer Adam Reesaback lived in Center Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio with Mary (45, born in Prussia) and eight children: Magdeline (16), George (15), Mary A. (14), Elizabeth (12), Charles J. (10), Teresa (?) (8), Anne (6), and Philip (4). Mary, Elizabeth, Charles and Teresa attended school. Magdeline and her parents were the only ones in the home who could read. Adam's farm was worth $3000, and his personal possessions were valued at $800.

Charles J. Riesbeck

Living in Martins Ferry, Ohio in 1938, according to the obituary of his sister, Lena Riesbeck Crum.

Anton Crock

Researcher Trudi Tipton states that Andy Crock had two sons and a daughter, but she does not provide their names.

In 1900, 26 year old Andy Grack lived with his wife of 4 years Theresa (25) in the home of Theresa's parents, Benedict (49) and Victoria (49) Busch of Friday Street in Shaler Twp., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them were Andy and Theresa's children Frank (3) and Helen (2). According to the census, Benedict and Victoria were born in Germany and the rest of the household in Pennsylvania. [This is obviously an error on the part of the census taker as Andy was born in Ohio and Theresa in Germany in the 1910 census. Andy is also listed as having immigrated in 1874 the same as the Busch's. This was probably intended to be entered on the line for Theresa.] Andy and Benedict both worked as "Day Laborers." Andy's birth information in the 1900 census (Jul 1873) does not match that from St. Mary's (20 Sep 1868).

In 1910, 41 year old Andrew Crock lived with his wife of 15 years Thresea (36) in a home they owned in Leetsdale, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them were their children Francis (13), Helen (11) and Robert (3). Francis and Helen attended school. Also living with them was Thresea's mother, victoria Basch [Busch] and two boarders. Andrew was born in Ohio, as were his parents. Thresea and Victoria were born in Germany as was Thresea's father. They immigrated to the United States in 1896. The children were all born in Pennsylvania. Andrew worked as a salesman for a bakery.

In 1920, 51 year old, Ohio born, Andrew Crock lved as a lodger in the home of Edward Warren at 423 Lockhadt St. in Pittsburgh (Ward 23-North Side), Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Although married, Andrew's family did not live with him (See notes for Theresa Busch Crock]. Andrew worked as a salesman for "Liberty Yeast."

Theresa Busch

In 1920, 45 year old, public school teacher, Theresa Crock lived in a morgaged home she owned at 269 Beaver St. in Leetsdale, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Although married, Theresa's husband was not living with her at the time of the 1920 census [See notes for Andrew Crock]. Living with her were her sons Francis B. (23) and Robert H. (12); her daughter Helen V. Scholl (21), her son-in-law Edward C. Scholl (24) and her mother widowed Victoria Busch (69). According to the census, Theresa and her mother were born in Bavaria and immigrated to the United States in 1886 but were not naturized citizens. Her children were all born in Pennsylvania. Edward Scholl was born in Maryland and his parents in Germany. Francis worked as a chauffer for Express Wagon and Edward as a steel worker. Robert attended school.

At the time of the 1930census, 56 year old widow Theresa Crock lived in a house she owned (value: $6800) in Economy Twp., Beaver Co., Pennsylvania, Living with her was her son Frank B. (33) and his wife Loretta (27) and her unmarried son Robert H (23). Based on census data, Frank and Loretta had been married for about 6 years. Frank worked for Central Tube and Robert for a metal molding company. Theresa was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1885. Other members of the household were born in Pennsylvania. The family owned a radio set.

Joey and Mervin Ward died in a flood after a large storm hit Ohio in early July 1969. They were helping to move people's cars off of the road during the flood and there was a manhole cover missing over one of the sewers. Mervin fell in, and when Joey tried to save him or pull him out, he was also dragged in. When they found them, they had drowned with their arms wrapped around each other.

On Sunday, July 6, 1969, almost the entire front page of The Zanesville Times Recorder was devoted to state-wide flooding after a big storm. (There was also a small article about the upcoming moon landing.) The newspaper's headline read "250 Rescued From Lake After Storm." The sub headline under that was "Coast Guard Presses Search For Missing; At Least 16 Deaths." Part of the article said:
Flooding was reported in Massillon and Canton. Mervin Ray Ward, 17, and
